CountryBoys's Account Talk

I know it's early but come on.....The stimulus bill is a joke. "Bad Bank" is a Bad Idea.....Geithner didn't pay his taxes on purpose....GS guy as NY Fed....etc......etc....

Yes, this will end up being cruel to the economy as a whole.

How many GS execs have Paulson's cell phone number? He is still part of the "good ole boys club" at GS.

CB, I agree 100% with your posts. Going back to JFK, I never saw a presidential candidate get the free ride Obama got from the media.

never saw a presidential candidate get the free ride Obama got from the media.
And is still getting. I saw the live shot first...before the press edited it.
The remarks I heard and saw was when he was so suprised that DC has closed the schools for the ice storm yesterday. He said, "Typical of Washington and why things never get done around here. " His tone and the look on his face said it all. Really fostering bipartisanism--sure. --NOT

Have you noticed the way the press is editing the videos on obama? His attitude of disgust and obvious irratation at nit picking things is very disheartening. He says he wants bi-partisan ship..but he keeps making digging remarks that send the message that he is so much better and how dare anyone to oppose him. I don't trust him.

That's BHO's thuggishness that the press is editing out. He'd made a great mobster back in the days and he's even from Chicago. :D And he has a very uppity arrogant attitude also, that he is so much better than the rest of us. I've never trusted the guy. Here's a guy that want's to put all our personal health records in one dispository, yet he can't/won't provide an notorized birth certificate. That sure to hell doesn't past the smell test from me, but others thinks it smells like roses.

The Stimulus Shopping List: $1.17 Trillion in Pork Goodies

"The $1.17 trillion stimulus bill passed by House Democrats on Wednesday bears little resemblance to the bill originally proposed by President Obama, with less than 5 percent of the funds now going to repair America’s deteriorating infrastructure."

Provisions of the bill that many legislators are questioning:

$1 billion for Amtrak, which hasn’t earned a profit in four decades.

$2 billion to help subsidize child care.

$400 million for research into global warming.

$2.4 billion for projects to demonstrate how carbon greenhouse gas can be safely removed from the atmosphere.

$650 million for coupons to help consumers convert their TV sets from analog to digital, part of the digital TV conversion.

$600 million to buy a new fleet of cars for federal employees and government departments.

$75 million to fund programs to help people quit smoking.

$21 million to re-sod the National Mall, which suffered heavy use during the Inauguration.

$2.25 billion for national parks. This item has sparked calls for an investigation, because the chief lobbyist of the National Parks Association is the son of Rep. David R. Obey, D-Wisc. The $2,25 billion is about equal to the National Park Service’s entire annual budget. The Washington Times reports it is a threefold increase over what was originally proposed for parks in the stimulus bill. Obey is chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

$335 million for treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

$50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts. $4.19 billion to stave off foreclosures via the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The bill allows nonprofits to compete with cities and states for $3.44 billion of the money, which means a substantial amount of it will be captured by ACORN, the controversial activist group currently under federal investigation for vote fraud. Another $750 million would be exclusively reserved for nonprofits such as ACORN – meaning cities and states are barred from receiving that money. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., charges the money could appear to be a “payoff” for the partisan political activities community groups in the last election cycle.

$44 million to renovate the headquarters building of the Agriculture Department.

$32 billion for a “smart electricity grid to minimize waste.

$87 billion of Medicaid funds, to aid states.

$53.4 billion for science facilities, high speed Internet, and miscellaneous energy and environmental programs.

$13 billion to repair and weatherize public housing, help the homeless, repair foreclosed homes.

$20 billion for quicker depreciation and write-offs for equipment.

$10.3 billion for tax credits to help families defray the cost of college tuition.

$20 billion over five years for an expanded food stamp program.

Russia Unveils Aggressive Arctic Plans
By Matthias Schepp and Gerald Traufetter

In a new national directive, Russia has asserted claims on large sections of the Arctic Ocean. The tone of the document is openly aggressive, prompting fears of increasing international tension over who has the right to exploit the mineral-rich territory.

....Despite the financial crisis, preparations for drilling are moving forward at a fast pace. The project "has too much potential" for the global economic downturn to affect it much, Madeo claims.

DPA
A Russia icebreaker in the Arctic Ocean: Moscow has unveiled aggressive new plans to exploit the Arctic's natural resources.
The gas field could become the first major milestone in the development of the energy reserves of the north. This prompted Norwegian Rear Admiral Trond Grytting to comment sarcastically in his presentation at the Tromsø conference (entitled "From the Cold War to the Hot Arctic"): "We have lots of natural resources, military personnel and disputed borders in the Arctic. This has never been a recipe for peace."

Very interesting article. Putin is going to call the rest of the world's bluff, by seeing if they have the fortitude to stand up to their naked aggression. It's a perfect time for the Ruskies to make their move. :worried:

"In time of crisis, looking to U.S. with wariness and hope"

This is very reassuring considering it was our fiscal leadership that brought us and the world to the brink of economic collapse. The world should rest assured that Barney Frank is on the job!

As far as the world being concerned about protectionism regarding the US steel provision that says "steel bought with money from the bill must be made in America". This could be a good thing. It would likely stimulate much more than the steel industry itself. China is unlikely to import US steel to then manufacture products and send them back to the US to conform. This would help any US based company that uses steel in production of a product to be competitive, thus creating many more US jobs. Just an idea I may be way off.

With all the US money that is being spent bailing out Saudi Princes like Al-Waleed bin Talal the largest individual investor in Citibank why not something for the American worker.

Yeah I know Barney sure gives me a lot of confidence, , so I sure the world leaders are even more worried. Regarding the protectionism, I'm really against that, but if we do go that route, steel would be the one to chose, since we've gone back and forth for least 2 decades. If memory serves me right, it was the Japanese first and then the Chicoms later, but regardless, we've protected our steel industry more than other industres, so hopefully they'll be just posturing from the Chicoms, but it could get a little interesting with them holding so much of our debt. But it may be 2 years out before we really get into infrastructure, since the Dems seem to have a different definition of "ready to throw dirt projects".

Yep, the US worker is the key. We need to get money back into his retirement, before he'll start spending. I read an interesting article over the weekend, and I should've posted it, but the gist was that it would take a generation to get back to some semblance of normality, because we have gone thru what our grandparents went thru during the depression and therefore the Amercan worker will be more frugal and the only big spending will come from welfare packages, since it's kind of free money and didn't require any sweat to collect it.

I think we have more pain, lower lows, before we finally start up for good. I'm in CP mode, because by gosh, I want to retire in 4 years, so I'm investing like heck in our ROTH's, but I'll need to come up with some other vehicle this year, besides just an individual investment account. Oh well.

I'm afraid my Federal Reserve Notes won't be worth much when I retire. I would hate to work so hard and save so much only to have rampant inflation disolve it all.

Obama's Gregg Pick Worries GOP

This worries me more than anything, even though the a deal has been worked out. We'll have to see if their word is as good as the drilling off shore word is. This may have a bigger impact on the market than anything.

I say I want to retire in 4 years, but with all this money printing, I'm with you regarding rampant inflation and the younger you are the worse it'll hit you in the pocket. :( And if the Congress goes filibuster proof the middle class will be dead in a generatin and the welfare class will rule the world. They'll get all they want so they continue to vote in the socialist class, that is currently worming it's way into the Congress. I may even have to die at my desk o keep paying for their goodies.

Yes this is scary.

"Gregg's nomination would also offer the White House the chance that New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch (D) would appoint a Democrat to serve the two remaining years of the senator's term. That, combined with the seating of Al Franken if he prevails in the disputed Minnesota election, would give Obama the 60-vote majority he needs for a filibuster-proof Senate."

They'll be nothing to slow down the social freight train then. This was suppose to be an Infrastructure Stimuls Package, but depending on the figures out, infrastrure accounts for 3 to 5% of the package. It's just an earmarks and welfare package, politics as usual and I thought BHO promised change, I didn't drink the kool-aid then and I won't now. We need to put people to work and this package is just more of the same. Who does he think he fooling. Maybe I can jst not pay my taxes and say it was just an honest mistake or I didn't know I had to. It's worked so far.

Actually I'm prepared to have my taxes raised, even though BHO said he wouldn't, another tall tale, but these taxes should go to actual infrastructure and not pork.

And Franken, cream of the liberal crop.:D
