nasa1974's retirement story

What alarm clock????? I have set the alarm once because I wanted to get the weed & feed down in the back yard while the grass was wet. I get up on my own around 7am and that is sleeping in. :D I used to have the alarm set for 4:50am when I wasn't retired. ;)

Truth be told...I always set the alarm for 0530 but my internal alarm had me up prior to it ever going off!!!! In the last 5 months I had to set it once and it took me a second to remember how to set it up. Retirement is great!!! This weekend had a college graduation party for my two daughters. They both have great jobs lined up which is saying alot in this economy!!! I am one proud peacock!!! Now I only need the housing market to come back so we can get out of this house and downsize!!!

A2Z, great news about your daughters. Good luck for the housing market. But right now you can't beat the interest rates. I refinanced a few months ago and got a 15 for just over 3%.

Got my fingers crossed that I get my OPM letter this week or early next week. My first retirement check is supposed to show up the first week of June. At least that's what the paperwork said should happen. I will have to call my HR person at NSSC to see if there is a website to go to or if my paystub will be mailed to me. Sure would like to know how it breaks down.

Nasa, It took me 4-6 weeks to get my OPM Letter. Retired 2/29/12, received my money for annual leave less taxes (40%) about 4/1/12, then Interim annulty started 5/1/12 with no explanation of calculation, only that after 6-9 months OPM will send you a letter telling you how your final Annuity was calculated. I was unable to find out by phone/e-mail/website how interim annuity was calculated.. I hope your interim annuity is higher than mine was, meaning more than 60% of your basic Govt service.. less Fed income tax.

I will definetly keep this thread updated. As far as my paystub. I would like to know how much is being taken out of it; insurance, taxes, etc.

The reason I am hoping that I see something this week or next from OPM has to do with the letter I got from NSSC on Monday, May 7th.
"NASA Shared Services Center (NSSC) has completed processing your retirement package and has forwarded it to the Department of the Interior (DOI) payroll office. DOI will close out your pay and leave records and transfer to OPM to complete your retirement. Once OPM receives your retiement package from DOI, they will assign a Civil Service Annuity (CSA) number which you will receive in the mail."
My final paycheck was deposited Friday and my leave was right on the mark shown on my timesheet. So hopefully DOI has sent off that information or will soon.

Congrats NASA, 0450 is long gone Daddy! In my case it was 2300 for the night shift, ask me if I miss it. Ease into it, no rush, and try to keep that $@!^ - eating - grin under control.

Thanks jimijr. I find that I am smiling a little more. :D

Happy Retirement nasa! Sounds like you are starting to get into the flow of it!

It has been interesting reading all the different retirement stories. I'm CSRS and decided to retire the year I first become eligible due to the increased stresses heaping on me. Now stress is easily controlled on my terms.

What amazes me the most is that we all worked for the same employer (GOVERNMENT) and our stories on retirement are so individual. No wonder Congress can't revise the pay systems, etc.

just my 2 cents worth . . .

Thanks 2moryrs. It is interesting how everyone has different experiences.

Wednesday I got my "Leave and Earnings" statement for my final paycheck. My annual and sick leave agreed with the numbers I had been tracking so hopefully DOI has sent along my information to OPM and I should see my first retiremnt check in early June.

Nasa,

I got a boatload of stuff while I was gone...see my retirement thread for the latest, from a FERS Guy !

I thought about you this week...our cruise left out of Port Canaveral, FL...several of the launch pads were visible across the water...

Stoplight...

Thanks Stoplight. Just got my letter from BENEFEDS (dental and vision). They will work with OPM to have payments made once my full retirement kicks in. Meantime I will have to pay monthly premiums. NSSC told me about that so I was expecting it.

Got my mail yesterday and I had a letter from OPM. I now have my password but I am still waiting for my claim number. Can't do anything until I have both. Maybe it will show up today?
