nasa1974's retirement story

From one NASA retiree to another; CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have not looked back since I left JSC and moved to North Alabama! RTR!

KevinD, SkyPilot ,Zebra & mayday, Thanks. Tomorrow is it. I was planning on being KMA this week but it wouldn't be fair to the guy taking my place. He came on board Monday 4/23 and I was off Monday and Tuesday that week. Plus I had some hours to take this week so I left early Monday and today. The weather has been lousy so I haven't been able to get him out in the field at all so I haven't been able to show him much. He's a smart kid so he won't fall flat on his face, but still. I know my High Voltage Systems Manager will help him out.
One of my managers stops me in the hall this morning and asked if we could meet with our Division Chief and some supervisors about our High Voltage Maintenance Contractors and their qualifications this afternoon. I told him I was leaving early so he goes can we meet Friday? Nope, tomorrow is my last day I tell him. He asked if we could meet tomorrow around 0800. So I have a meeting tomorrow. I could have said no but I feel it is important to discuss why our High Voltage Electricians have these specific qualifications. The contract ends early next year and I've heard questions about why couldn't any licensed electrician do it? Ummmm, because our Safety Manual says that our High Voltage Electricians have to be trained and qualified in order to work in our substations. That takes almost 2 years to accomplish. So yeah, I'll spend my last day talking about how we keep people from getting hurt or killed. Off my soapbox. :D

Well today was my last day. The calendar watch begins. Stay tuned.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE!!!

I am tempted to follow you out when I become eligible in November......but I guess I will have to be satisfied with 4 more years while my youngest goes through college. :cheesy:

Congrats old timer. I only got 20-25 more years to go. Goodtimes.
Your time left in may be a blessing. Our Baby Boomer drain on socal security will be almost over, I'll be about 80 and I'm near the last of them. 1952:D

Was thinking about you today, Nasa !!! Sounds like you felt like I did on MY last day...It's not that you're NOT ready and willing to retire ; it's just like there are still things to do for the youngsters and Management, that you said you'd do. I think it's a reflection of your work ethic that you've had for all these years !

Anyway...CONGRATS !!! Now, our thread exchanges (CSRS vs FERS) can shift their focus to how we get our retirement "bennies", and what happens next !

Enjoy tomorrow morning !!!

Well I am not expecting SS so I am just saving and investing. If by the time I reach the age to which there still is SS for me, then that will just be the icing on the cake.

Congrats nasa. Feelings may be mixed but I bet the predominant one is good. I am looking forward to not having to get up at 4-dark-thirty any more. In a mere 1132 work days that is.

As to that manager who didn't know you were leaving and wants to contract out the HV work to "any licensed electrician", send him a few of the videos from the OSHA site showing arc flash incidents in 480 cabinets. Or any cabinets/enclosures. You know the one's to look for. Sounds like your HV Systems Manager will take care of your replacement. I hope your replacement gets to watch some of those videos, they make a believer out of you.:worried:

Off MY soap box.

That's all behind you now, so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

PO

Thanks everyone.

I slept in this morning, got up around 7am. I normally get up around 10 to 5. I got a to do list that will keep me busy for awhile I just have to get started. We are having some unusually warm weather here on the north coast. So the wife and I are going out for a walk this morning and I can get the list started before lunch. :D My cake and coffee was real nice and I will talk about that later. I am going to have to figure out my computer time so I can keep an eye on the market and still get some stuff done around the house. Later all.

There is a necessity to adapt to your new Freedom, be flexible!

I got my "Congratulations on your retirement" letter in the mail today.

NASA Shared Services Center (NSSC) has completed processing my retirement package and has forwarded it to the Department of the Interior (DOI) payroll office. DOI will close out my pay and leave records and transfer to OPM to complete my retirement. Once OPM receives my retiement package from DOI, they will assign a Civil Service Annuity (CSA) number which I will receive in the mail. Once I receive my CSA number, OPM normally issues an interim check within 10-14 business days. My lump sum Annual Leave check should show up in 2-3 pay periods after my retirement date.

Nasa,

I've been told the process is pretty much the same for me...just some different agency names, and a FERS number rather than a CSA number :)

I DID get my A/L lump sum in my last paycheck, though !
