nasa1974's retirement story

Actually I was going for the smile factor. It's just that the choices seemed odd to me. We have yearly surveys's as well. It just seems that we change for the worse sometimes rather than the better.

:embarrest: Actually I was looking at some of the folks around here. We had an engineer that retired at 80, almost 60 years of service. That's what I was referring to. To the best of my knowledge I'm not aware of mandatory retirement here.

This is information that is more for those that are planning to retire but still have some time to plan. Tammy provides links to some very important websites. This is a keeper.

Not much happening. Just trying to clean stuff off the computer. My supervisor says he is this close || to having someone shadow me. Whatever!!! This week on our intranet web page they posted my name and link to my retirement book. So anyone can click the link and sign my book and leave disparaging remarks. ;)

Well they finally decided who will take over once I retire. They have my replacement scheduled to follow me around starting the 23rd. Funny thing is I am planning on being at work Tuesday, a half day Wednesday (going out to lunch with some friends and current retirees) and Thursday. The last week they might get 3 productive days out of me if I don't decide to go KMA. ;)

The latest on my retirement.

I'm down to 2 signatures on my "Employee Seperation Clearance Record" both security signatures. Those I get on the last day. Then this morning my supervisor asked me to give him 4 monumental things that I have done over my career. I've been involved in some pretty neat stuff but I don't know if I would consider them monumental. I guess I will have to use what I learned in the creative writing class I took. :D

When I am asked similar questions, I find Forrest Gump and good refernece point.

Nasa,

That's pretty cool they got your replacement on board...even though you'll probably have to do some serious hand-holding your last week !

As I noted in my thread, my brother got his OPM numbers in 4 months, rather than the 8+ I was expecting ! I hope they process our numbers as quick...

I was talking to a co-worker who is going out under CSRS, vs. FERS. I hadn't given much thought to the $$$ difference between the 2 programs, but I was curious, so I ran my info through one of the on-line CSRS calculators. I was surprised at how much more my annual basic pension would've been if I was CSRS !

OTOH, I didn't look at how many $$$ I've been "given" as part of the 1% FERS Agency match, plus the match contribution into my TSP, plus the SS supplement until I'm 62. I think you're still getting a better "deal", but I'd need to dive in deeper, and frankly, I'm not motivated to do that, since it's not relevant to me, and it might make me depressed :) Ya can't change the past !!!

I was thinking of you when I saw the news about the Shuttle going "home" to the Smithsonian. I saw that weird combo of the -747 and the Shuttle flying around Dryden and Edwards AFB many times, when they were doing the tests...hard to believe that combo could even get off the ground !

Stoplight...

Stoplight, Thanks for the driveby. I hope we don't have to wait 8+ months. Nice to hear that your bother didn't have to wait long. Other than pictures I have not seen the piggyback ride in person. That would be pretty neat. You are getting pretty short. Not counting today I have 9 plus a wakeup. Oops!! I 3 days to take off or lose. So that makes it 6 days and a wakeup. :D

Yesterday my supervisor told me that my desk phone (number) and computer will be transfered to my replacement soon. I found out this morning that we will have a shared mailbox on the phone starting today, but I hope my computer doesn't go away until May 2nd. With no computer they might as well send me home on excussed leave. Yeah, right!!!

Nasa,

We'll keep our fingers crossed on the OPM review ! It'll be interesting to see if there is any significant difference between which one of us gets across the OPM "Finish Line" first...you, as a CSRS Guy, or me, as a FERS Guy :)

RE: the Shuttle approach and landing tests at Dryden/EAFB...the "combo" looked so bizarre ! Like I said...you would never believe it could get off the ground...and it flew so slow !!!

...and yes, I'm getting REAL short ! 4 plus a wake-up, although I'll probably go in some time this weekend to do a final project punch list inspection when the airfield isn't "active" ! Took this afternoon off so I could take my Wife to the airport here in Florida...she's en route up your way, to Ft Wayne, IN, to attend her Aunt's funeral. The crazy thing is, she's got a layover in Dallas, TX !!! There's no correlation between "miles traveled" and "ticket cost" in the airline biz anymore, particularly in "small" markets :) She wasn't happy to see the low temps in Ft Wayne are forecast in the mid-30's :embarrest: Makes it tough to pack !

Sounds like they are kicking you out the door early??????????

Not really. If I don't have a computer I'll sit around and read the paper or play angry birds on my cell phone. :D More than likely I will just spend a little more time in the field showing my replacement what to do.

Saw the E-mail today. They have my cake and coffee reception set for the afternoon of the day I retire. Nice way to head out the gate on the last day. I will have to bug out early so I can go home and pick up the wife and bring her back. I guess I won't be working a full day.:rolleyes: 3 days and a wake up. May 3rd here I come.

I also noticed today that TSP didn't take any money out of my paycheck. That's good news since I stopped the contribution April 2nd. Rounding 3rd and heading home.
