nasa1974's retirement story

WOO! HOO! Got my claim number from OPM in todays mail.

I also got a letter from DOI saying that my retirement deductions withheld by my agency has been certified correct and has been sent to OPM.

I also got paid today. About 73% of my expected full pay. But then again I am short 3 days. Will have to wait and see what next month looks like.
When I get a chance to review my claim I will report what that looks like.

I wonder when my AL lump sum will show up?

I got on the OPM site today and what they show as net payment vs. my credit union deposit is off by a couple hundred. I guess Monday I play the waiting on hold game to find out what else came out of the pay check. :(

Thanks for play by play on the retirement process!

I thought insurance and federal taxes were deducted from annuity. Looks like u made a good move getting out of stocks before the holiday. I wish washington would go ahead and get the fighting done so I know what is going to be cut from our generous retirement pensions come 2013.

Your interim pay only takes out federal tax. Once OPM figures out what your real retirement pay is they take out taxes and insurance.

Well I didn't check the mail until this morning. :embarrest: I got another letter from OPM that showed what was deducted from my first check (it was different from the website). The difference was in the federal tax. My W-4 is claiming married at the single rate no deductions. OPM initial takes out married 3 deductions. So at the moment all is correct.

Checked the credit union online and I got a nice chunk of money deposited today. I am guessing it is for my annual leave. Checked the OPM website and there is nothing to explain the deposit (go figure). So I guess I will have to wait for a snail mail response. The only problem is the deposit is less that what I calculated it to be. Guess I have to wait.

They take a big chunk of taxes out of that leave money, you will see when you get the statement in the mail. One good thing is that I got a bunch of it back when I filed my tax return. money1.gif

Nasa,

I believe your A/L payment comes from your Agency ; OPM has basically nothing to do with that part. If you can go on-line and get your LES, log in and check there. That's what happened with me; received an on-line LES, even though I didn't have a paycheck, per se. They also sent me a hard copy, just to make sure...

Stoplight...

Yep, just got my Leave and Earnings statement from NASA in todays mail for my annual leave. I expected a big chunk to come out but not as much as they took. I planned on Federal taxes but they also took out for; Medicare, state taxes, local taxes, Health Insurance and life insurance. I was expecting around 20% but they took out 31.5%. Dang!! Things are moving forward and that is good. Let's hope that OPM can get my satuff figured out sooner than later.

Yeah, that's about right. Plus it kicked me into a higher tax bracket which made some of my usual deductions to be disallowed due to income restrictions. :(

Thanks Clester, I'm not to worried about the next higher tax bracket yet. My wife has been on unemployment since the first of the year.

By unemployed do you mean retired, or unemployed.

If you mean unemployed let me know how getting your wife to find a job works out for you while your sleeping in, LOL. That would be a trick I need to keep in my back pocket:D.

Nope unemployed. She actually sleeps in a little later than I do, but when I get up I get her coffee all set up. I know how to keep a happy house. ;) She searches for her own jobsand has to report them to unemployment. It is frustrating for her because she has had a couple of interviews but nothing has come out of them.

Congratulations on your retirement Nasa (if I didn't already). A couple of quick questions as I'm looking at the big R sometime between January and May next 2013. (1) They took out for Medicare? So they consider A/L Balance as income earned while not retired -- or do they make that back up when final pension figures are sorted out and hey issue you the retroactive past due check? I assume that you kept some life insurance then?

With the deductions taken out of the lump sum A/L it looks like is was treated as income earned. Yes, I still have the basic life insurance but I took the 75% reduction.

My TSP letter came in the mail today.

"The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) has been informed that you have seperated from Federal service. Below is some information about TSP withdrawls as well as personal information we have for your account. If any of the personal information is incorrect, please contact the TSP to find out how to change it."

Sure hope OPM can be on the ball.

Got my letter from BENFEDS saying that they will bill me directly for my dental and vision benifits until the Annuity deductions start. Oh Boy!!!

Got my monthly bill from BENFEDS yesterday. Wondering what my check will look like next week? One week to the next is still an adventure. :D
