nasa1974's retirement story

What a great read. Is there a retirement 2.0 thread :)
Thanks JPH543.

No retirement 2.0 thread.

Scrolled through some pages and there are some names that have disappeared from the ranks.

Follow up.

I did retire a second time in 2021. That was the permanent retirement. Did that to take care of my wife when she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
Between the first retirement and the second retirement we enjoyed spending time with our 5 grandkids. The wife and I went on 12 cruises. We cruised the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Alaska, the Panama Canal and Australia and New Zealand. Took one cruise with our daughters and their husbands before grandkids.

Since my wife's passing, I have been on 11 more cruises and officially done 3 burials at sea with some of her ashes and maybe a half dozen unofficially. One cruise was with my youngest daughter and her family. The grandkids loved the cruise.
Did a Disney and Universal Studio trip with my daughters, sons-in-law and the grandkids.

Spending lots of time with my grandkids.

My government pension is treating me well and Social Security got a boost. Did well with my TSP.
Probably spend too much time on social media and playing video games. But I stay active, so my ass isn't glued to my chair permanently.

I have 5 more cruises scheduled now through 2028. One will be visiting Spain and then crossing the Atlantic to Ft. Lauderdale (9 days at sea).

So, all in all retirement has been good. Just not really good. There is just one missing piece to make it great.

Wow, a lot of updates since that thread for sure... thank you for sharing your story. So sorry to hear about your missing piece after your wife passing, I am glad you are getting to travel and spend time with the kids and grandkids in your permanent retirement. What a great idea spreading her ashes and burials at sea as you do the cruises. As a former Sailor that is what I would want for me as well!

You sound like an awesome guy, so much history in this forum since it was created glad you are still here to share and participate, thank you again for the response.

Thanks.

You had to do some serious digging to pull this thread out of the archives.
A lot of changes since I got involved way back when. Some great people helped evolve what this site is today. Some have moved on, some have just disappeared and some are still here since the beginning. We all have stories to tell. Once I got involved it helped me understand my TSP better and how I might do better. What's nice is there are new people getting involved and bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to help everyone on this site.
Way back in the beginning we had to phone in our IFT's. Then for a short period of time, we actually were able to make daily IFT's via the internet. We got our hands slapped for that one (long story) and got stuck with the current 2 IFT's a month. We realized we could do a rebalance in our TSP accounts every other day as long as it was less than 1%. They caught on to that. And here we are today. Always pushing the envelope to do better.
JPH543 welcome aboard and stay involved. Every person makes this site better.

I will admit I have been doing a ton of digging through the forum. I never really knew how much I didn't know until I started reading and learning about TSP and 401K's. I feel I was late to the game so trying to get up to speed to make up for the lost time! This site has been invaluable!
Thanks for the welcome, will do!

@nasa1974,

Then for a short period of time, we actually were able to make daily IFT's via the internet.

Remember the 'Grab the Penny' IFTs trades to the G-Fund the day before the fund ticked up by one penny. Everybody trying to math it out before the tick to gain that guaranteed growth. Too funny.

And, the C-Fund mid-day price of $6.66 in 2009.

And, my personal favorite, Burocrats Ark. Too funny.
