Playing the I fund

Those stock brokers must of had some bad sushi for lunch because the NIKKEI lost most of its morning gains and closed at +0.20%

Good to see the Nikkei Marketeers found something positive to grab on to, with all the garbage going on across their section of the pond.

To see what's going on internationally, I go to Kitco.com/market. This morning its showing me that the Nikkei is -13.79, Dollar -.07 compared to a basket of other currencies and that oil is up $.51. This is in conflict from what other people are reporting. Where are some good sites that provide a snapshot view of what the international markets are doing? I'm not sure I'm getting the best info?

The new jobs report (non-farm payrolls), and the unemployment rate that came out at 8:30 A.M., appear to be favorable for a FED pause in August, because generally speaking, these are not as inflationary as the 300,000 plus new jobs that were forecast by the ADP Data. The payroll number came at 121K, instead of an expected 175K by Bloomberg's estimate, and the ADP estimate. The unemployment rate came out at 4.7% (vs. a prior 4.6%).

This morning, an analyst on CNBC World opined that if the payroll numbers were to come in less than the expected 175,000, the U.S. Dollar would continue to weaken. This seems to be favorable to the I-Fund, because if this occurs we could start getting better FV numbers due to the relative strength of the Euro and the YEN versus the Dollar. Please post any other comments that I might have missed here.

You can try Bloomberg.com (Stocks, Market Data, Indices, Futures). Also a very good site is Yahoo.com (Finance). Both are free of charge, although they also have a pay alternative. Good Luck!

Mistake: The unemployment rate came out at 4.6% vs. expectations of 4.7%. So, it remained the same as the prior number.

I have compiled in one page (from yahoo) most of the world market indices and currencies that affect the I-Fund. Go to www.tspgo.com. Click on "World Market" on the left menu. It gives you a graphic quick view of what is going on in the foreign markets. (http://www.tspgo.com/tspgoframes.htm). The link is at the bottom of the menu.

Good luck to all!

I haven't had the time to study this, but do you trade the TSP funds by using this site?

EFA has turned negative for the day. It was way up when foreign markets closed and the dollar hasn't changed much since then, which is well down for the day. I can't keep track of all the talk about "FV" and "what is owed". Any guesses about what TSP will do with this?

I am at a loss to understand EFA. I know that it is an exchange traded fund. Since noon, the stock prices in the EAFE index have been written into stone since foreign markets are all closed. Also since noon, the dollar has remained down and has even lost a little more. For EFA to be nosediving, someone is selling big time. WHO?? WHY??

You are exactly right. It is an exchange traded fund. It is being sold in anticipation that foreign markets will sell off on Monday after our big sell-off this afternoon. If they don't (let's say Asia and Europe and the dollar are all flat on Monday) then the EFA will be up big to cover the big sell-off today.

Wow, the F Fund (+.03 cents) actually beat the I Fund (+.01 cent). The MSCI EAFE was at +.597%, so I guess an FV of -.10 cents went into play. :D
