Getting my TSP butt handed to me on a platter. The beginning of May I was about 8% away from a number I wanted to get to. So I figured if I could get 3% of that in May I would be happy and probably sit in G for awhile and hope to play the on and off the lily pad to get the other 5% over the summer. I figured May couldn't have 3 bad years in a row. Well, now I am 18% away from that number and more than likely will have to jump to G just to stop the bleeding. The kicker was most mornings, the last week or so, started out in the green but didn't go red until after 12. :( Go figure. It was fun being in the top 5 but I bet I won't see the top 50 the rest of the year.

SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids

INTERPLANETARY SHOCK WAVE: An interpanetary shock wave possibly associated with the M5-class solar flare of May 17th swept past Earth on May 20th around 0200 UT. The shock's arrival caused geomagnetic activity around the poles, and several outbreaks of high-latitude auroras. Images:#1, #2.

FANTASTIC ECLIPSE: The Moon passed in front of the sun on Sunday, May 20th, producing a deep solar eclipse visible across the Pacific side of Earth. Sunlight dimmed, the air cooled, ordinary sunbeams turned into fat crescents and rings of light. Here is a sample view from Lake Waconia, Minnesota:
fishing_strip.jpg
"I drove to the lake, and a couple of fishermen were kind enough to drop their lines in the glitter path of the eclipse," says photographer Tyler Burg. "It was a fantastic composition!"

VENUS TRANSFORMED: Something special is happening to Venus in the evening sky. The second planet is diving toward the sun for a much-anticipated transit on June 5-6. As Venus turns its night side toward Earth, the planet is transforming into a beautifully slender and colorful crescent:
venus_strip.jpg
John Chumack of Dayton, Ohio, took the picture on May 14th using a 10-inch telescope. "I was blown away by the sight of Venus," he says. "The planet was 14% illuminated, 47 arcseconds in diameter, and blazing at -4.43 magnitude."

The crescent shape of Venus is easy to see in good binoculars or small telescopes. No special observing experience is required. Just find Venus in the western sky after sunset (you can't miss it), point and look. A good tripod to hold the optics steady is recommended.

As the evening wears on and Venus sinks toward the horizon, the refractive effect of Earth's atmosphere splits the crescent into the colors of the rainbow. Kevin R. Witman of Cochranville, Pennsylvania, observed the phenomenon on May 11th: "Earth's atmospheric refraction of Venus's ample light made a beautiful image through my 10-inch telescope.

Same thing happened to me. I should have seen it coming though. Any time Greece and the European Crisis pops up, the markets tank, just like last year. I will not be in the market when the budget talks start again.

Same thing happened to me. I should have seen it coming though. Any time Greece and the European Crisis pops up, the markets tank, just like last year. I will not be in the market when the budget talks start again.

The strange thing about it was that the markets would start out in the green and by the end of the day tank. So if you made a move before noon thinking you might have a good day you got really disappointed before 2.

Had a good day today. :D Let's hope we can ride a positive wave this week. If I can get a little more back this week I am out for June. Matter of fact I might get out Thursday. I will be out of town this Friday and Tuesday next week and won't be around a computer.

NASA,
I'm right there with you ... planning on being out on Friday & Tuesday. Had the exact same thoughts of being out of the equity funds during this time frame .... just too risky.... cheers KT

Nasa, Bronc, Ken

Same thought, out summer with maybe a bunt and run 1 or 2 days a month to use IFTs. I think it will get ugly the next two months.

I jumped to the lily pad folks. Hindsight being what it is I should have done it the last week of April. Anyway I will be out of town tomorrow and Tuesday and will have no computer access, so I won't be able to follow the market. Ah! Retirement!! With the long weekend coming up and the Euro and Greece issues I felt that I might as well cut my losses. I still have one IFT left if I decide to get in just before June but that may be wishful thinking. Looking back at last years summer market I just might be better on the sidelines. I still want to get my IFT up to a certain dollar figure before I do a "partial withdrawl" or take it out all together (haven't decided on that yet). I was hoping to get almost there this month but that blewup in my face. So it may take me the rest of the year before I make any big IFT move.
Good luck everyone.

"June, July, and August - by far - the best performing months during an election year."

I know what you are saying but there is too many other things mudding the water. I would have thought that May wouldn't have had 3 bad years in a row. Surprise!!

Maybe for you Birch, but that is not what happened in '04 and '08, see govexe TSP returns chart.

Good luck to anyone who decides to stay in the market this summer

I will be in and out at times. Most likely I will out of the market when its going up and....:embarrest:

I forgot to wish you happy birthday. There are a couple more people who have been around here a while who share the day but I forget who.

I think you said this was one of those decade birthdays for you. Me too. I was so busy on the day I forgot about it.

Happy birthday to all who share it. John Wayne, Sally Ride, nasa1974 and a whole host of other important peoples.:cheesy:
