crws's Account Talk

Thanks everybody!
It has been an especially lazy day for me, starting with sleeping in until 10am...yawn. :D
Ho hum.... 2pm, might be time to stir.
The fat squirrels have been busy all morning.

of note:

Love, Pain, Money, Cocaine Light Up Same Area of Brain

“It turns out that the areas of the brain activated by intense love are the same areas that drugs use to reduce pain,” said Arthur Aron, PhD, a professor of psychology at SUNY-Stony Brook and one of the study’s authors. Aron has been studying love for 30 years. “When thinking about your beloved, there is intense activation in the reward area of the brain — the same area that lights up when you take cocaine, the same area that lights up when you win a lot of money.”

Get Things Right: The Checklist Manifesto Book Review

Ineptitude-type mistakes can be caused by emotion. I resonated with how one successful venture capitalist describes why he uses a checklist. He wants to avoid “cocaine brain”. “Cocaine brain” is so-called because the prospect of making money lights up the same neurons as cocaine. Neuroscience has shown that emotions can overrun our circuits. For example, the emotion of greed causes irrational exuberance. The proposal team I ran faced the “cocaine brains” of the sales teams who brought in the RFPs.

I've not heard of "break9away" or the Alan Parson Project before. But I loved the music and the animations in the first Youtube. The symbolism of using Anubis and Bastet and their actions combined with the lyrics in such a thought provoking way. Wow! Thanks for sharing!

I knew nothing of the movie, (now on my "watch" list) but the song was on my mind, coupled with Pyramania.
I was thinking it is relative to the market's testing, testing, testing, ever so higher, little bit by little bit, just like oil and gas prices.
With housing prices lower and 9% still unemployed, I am inclined to think this is a liquidity bubble close to popping.
It is unrealistic to believe that current-time market highs are a true reflection of our state of the union,
and at some point the chickens will return to roost ;).
A 2% drop over a couple of days while TSP-restrained can take gains much faster than they are given,
so I'm awaiting an entry point...

Okay, so now I'm embarrassed. I didn't know it was a movie either! I'm a lot more likely to be reading a book on ancient history than going to a movie theater. I guess I'll need to look for this one on Pay-per View.

I absolutely agree with you on the markets. But I really think any pullback in the next few days will be a buying opportunity rather than the start of the big downturn that we all know has to come sometime.

I don't expect some huge sell off per se, but I do think fair value with a healthy dollar would be within % of 10/11k,
with this range/+ saved for election year posturing.

After all,
USAA portfolio manager analyzes Quantitative Easing Part 2, its potential impacts and what it could mean to investors.

"The Fed believes that businesses will take advantage of the lower borrowing costs, which will lead to increased spending, new investment in their operations and enhanced hiring," says Toohey.
"The Fed also believes that lower mortgage rates will assist households by making home ownership more affordable and by providing opportunities for existing homeowners to refinance."

"Finally, low interest rates often result in higher equity valuations, which Bernanke believes will contribute
to a wealth effect among consumers who may spend more, given a newfound confidence," Toohey says.

Is it true?
Are we there yet?

Give your banking business to community banks or credit unions that participate in the Co-Op Network (even at 7-11's)
instead of the mega monopoly banks, who like Chase, will soon follow suit charging non-customers $5 for withdrawals from a Chase ATM, in addition to fees that their own financial institution will charge.
Want Cash from an ATM? Pay a $5 Fee
Seriously, people who continue to support this type of price gouging have only themselves to blame, and deserve what they get.
There is no valid excuse anymore to not take action, Just Do It!
We have closed all but one mega bank account, which is our mortgage through Chase, but with caveat. It is the Union Plus program, sponsored via the AFL-CIO, with many protections, including loss of wage, loss of job, mortgage loans are retained by Chase, (not sold) and many other benefits.

Our 2 primary cards are both CU Visa's managed locally, 1 each for my wife and I, and I still keep an empty Home Depot $500 account for the now-rarer 1yr same as cash promos, or emergencies. (If my CU had a SAC HELOC (and I had some equity ;) ) I would dump the Citi/Home Depot card pronto, but ney.

I can go into our local credit union and sit down with the branch manager at virtually a moment's notice any day of the work week and discuss financial needs, with his determination weighing heavily in the ALL local decision process, or even just to drop in, BS, and hear his insight(s) on the Board member's opinion of the investing landscape.

I encourage those in the big bank loop to break free and try the small scale, personal service that is offered to nearly all federal employees through credit unions, and assist your children in doing the same, I, for one, and very glad to have done it.
