amoeba's Account Talk

After polluting JTH's thread for a bit:

I'm back to my own.....I already reached my monthly goal, which JTH implied was too modest, and then added that I moved money around too much.

Of course, immediately thereafter - JTH went all in, and then out - the next day (last thursday and friday), and thereafter blogged his take on entry points based on breakthrough higher intraday lows and such. If met, JTH opines, we're in for 1,420 and 755 in the index equivalents of the C and S funds.

OK - I read it - and I bit. 85% in. But as a result I've met my monthly goal of getting above annual return of 2%. Last month, I bailed on a similar low goal (~1% gain), and left 2% gain unachieved. Should I go for the gusto? Let's say - - - - another 1%? for a total 1.5% for the month?

Dunno. 1,420......this month......makes your mouth water, doesn't it?

Did somebody just ring a bell???

Just set a lower stop somewhere that you can live with and then say "What the #@^*". Of course discipline is required, and a willingness to be successful!

1420 is the high-side target, not implied to be an absolute, I usually seek the middle ground. As for my making an in & out exit (while at the same time telling you that you move your money too much) I will say that if you were up 12% we wouldn't have had that conversation. I entered the markets at the bottom of the low, then left the markets on the first green day of the month with a .42% gain. As long as you exit with a profit, you'll be fine. I'd rather stay in for 2 months than lock in a loss...

Yuck!!!!

My atomic bomb pattern continues; as I enter 50% or more, market drops like a lead balloon.

Back to minus 3.5% in a heartbeat, is my guess.

You do seem to be a barometer of sorts, but I don't use you as a primary indicator. I'm long and strong in this stampede.

Suck it up, profits don't get handed to you on plate. ;) It's a rough patch, I'll add some inputs tonight.

Maybe your heart is too weak for this? Quit worrying about every little dip.

You are not bad luck and should not think that way. You are at times indecisive and by the time you've made the decision, you're late to the game. It's called being the dumb money. You're not jixed, just ill-timed and that can be resolved.

I'm actually NOT indecisive; I make all of these decisions with convinction and confidence (they just don't turn out). And don't egg me too much on number of IFT's; alot of that is just averaging in and out; and expressing my civil disobediance with Mr. Long's IFT limit program. My goal is 100 IFT's; but only 10-12 of them will be significant.

About today - all I can say - in sum - is "what the heck, I didn't see today coming". Most of it I chalk up to light volume which tends to enhance fluctuations....the euro/asian inflation data.....and the upcoming domestic data later this week (which I think will be OK at least) - and made the move. I am holding most of it until the data come out and go from there.

Ha ha, you made a funny in the "recent IFTs" section. Regardless, you still play with your money too much.

Just think if he had an outside account where you pay fees to trade - he's be eternally broke. TSP provides an advantage toward training wheels and is cost effective.

He'd be paying money to LOSE money.... Think about that for a minute. OUCH

There's some pretty awesome returns posted on this board by regular folks that many institutions can't match.... and its FREE!!! All you have to do listen.

JTH. I enjoy you posts with the good information you post on the board. I like the fact you keep posting the info for everyone, whether you are in equities or
on the sidelines.
My post wasn't meant to be serious and I wasn't attacking anyone. Please accept my apology.

Friend not called for this is a family forum and everyone here's entitled to some slack, lord knows I need it. :D We are a little rough on the mighty little one, sometimes it's a ribbing, sometimes it's deserved. That reminds me, it's been a while since I've poked our resident buy & holder...

Amoeba,

Heavy selling to safety during a minor correction?

I'm actually thinking of migrating my slacker 20% into the equities funds:)

Well, that might work for you - but right now - futures look like hell. I wouldn't call this a minor correction either (i.e., minus 8%, for example). I'd call it me making bad IFT's to begin with.

And, while I entered a preliminary IFT, I remain 2/3 in, having wished I dumped it all last tuesday morning when I had reached my monthly goal by the noon cutoff. As JTH says, bad timing.

As it is, I'm near the bottom end of my tolerance in monthly loss after about 10 trading days. I may or may not cancel my heavy sell based on what we know monday.

To be clear - I am still confused about what the heck is going on in the market. Energy, techs, commodities, are being sold off. Maybe this is a prelim to the post-QE2 era?

I will try to hold if there's a little better than a snow-ballz-chance-in-hell of getting back under MINUS 3% for the year. whoo -hooo!!!!
