alevin's account talk

my oldest nephew (late 20s) finally reached his breaking point.

he wasn't looking for a mechanic job was inability to afford tools

His life is improving-recently combined finance and living arrangements with first serious girl friend, talking of getting married.

He has a job interview Monday

Alevie -- I didn't forget about him Monday

and not to question my praying abilities... but since I did remember

How did the interview go ???

Hi! An update on the nephew. He didn't land the job from that particular interview, but he did subsequently get laid off 2 weeks ago from the job he'd had the last several years-one that actually had health insurance benefits. He put out a blizzard of applications to no avail-unemployment check lollygagged about showing up in his bank account meantime.

My dad encouraged him to apply at Walmart-(ugh). He didn't want to but my dad told him beggars can't be that choosy, so he applied, and starts work this coming week, finally first job he actually trained for-It's full time, but "temporary". How's that for mixed message?

I wired funds this week so he could buy fundamental minimum-requirement tools. Was happy to be able to do so.

My almost new son in law is an assistant manager at a Walmart in the Chicago area. His goal is to eventually move into the international operations after he does his time in grade. He has a degree from VMI in international relations - so he is on the right track I think. I sent him an article regarding the Walmart plans for expansion on the global scene and my daughter told me he has it on the refrigerator door. Plenty of room for opportunity.

I also know about another guy who is less well educated that took a job with Walmart. He was eventually transfered from Gainesville, Florida to some place in South Carolina. After there he was transfered to Phoenix and is now heading for Wyoming. Every transfer provided a step up and he is now a wharehouse manager. I think he'll do just fine - and by the way he is an exconvict that wants to work hard. Walmart is a family and they got a great profit sharing plan.

Thanks for the positive picture, Birch. Nephew may discover he likes it there, and if they offer him permanent position, later, he may stay. Planning to get married late summer next year, expecting first child a couple months prior-I didn't ask why wait, not my business. He's happy, responsible, employed and hopeful for the future. His 2 young stepkids already love him better than their messed up biodad. those are the important things.

Hi! An update on the nephew.

How is his 'genetic condition'?

You realize the same condition took his father's life at a very young age. This has been like a 'ticking time bomb' ready to explode and 'poof' it's over.

If somehow - that could disappear -- his chances of a long and happy productive life would far exceed 'temporary unemployment'.

Well Steady, I haven't really talked about that here before, tho I have mentioned his mom is a veteran and widow of a veteran-at least in passing.

For those who remember Pete Maravitch the basketball player who died of natural causes-my nephew has the same heart condition, same condition his dad died of at age 25 long ago now. My BIL was 6'8" and died suddenly shortly before 3d anniversary, leaving wife and 2+ yr old son behind. That son is now 28, 6'10", has lived with knowledge of impending heart condition his whole life. Some with the heart condition survive w/o open heart surgery (aorta section replacement in mid20s), those who don't are typically taken in their mid 20s tho not all die.

My nephew couldn't have surgery-the problem spot in his system was the point of connection between aorta and heart-replacement not possible. Anyway, he told me the other night that cardiologist has told him 3x checkups now, that his heart/aorta and body size finally match and he is no longer at risk of heart/aorta suddenly going poof like a balloon blown up too far. A modern-day miracle.

That's is good news.

Decided to take a look at my regular mutual fund IRA stats today, my buy-and-hold diversification account (more or less). Small account relative to TSP.

GEE, I've managed to stay above the 0% mark over past 2 years in TSP :), BUT still showing 2-year total 16% loss from 07 til now in the IRA that is :worried:, even tho showing 50% gain since low point in 08 .

Hmm. How many years will it take in IRA to just get back buying power of what I've lost since 07 peak, sticking with B&H diversified between bonds/stocks/ domestic/foreign? Especially with $ devaluing how much this year????

Did you make any contributions/DCA in the IRA?

No Kevin, I haven't. Contribs all went in pre-2000. I started paying off the mortgage at that point with spare investable funds and just finished last spring. Back in 2002, I took my post-tax IRA contribs and converted them to a separate Roth account.

Since last year, new spare funds went into Roth and taxable brokerage accounts and saving up for new roof.

These pre-tax IRA funds have been riding for years now in a single mutual fund family with maybe a shift among funds once a year or so-rode down and up all the way through 2000-2009-ouch.

Alevie,
I just noticed you're in the TOP 10 !!

WOW !! You are good :toung: really good !!! :)

Well congratulations on such a wonderful start.

Me --- I'm way down towards the bottom ... but that's cool cause it gives me lots of running space.:cool:

Yeah, I was here before-last year, right into mid-March-then I went into a slump :p. Plan to change that and keep my spot this year!:D

This is what I am watching, guys. Depending on what happens with Ichimokus and candle indicators-(current Ichimoku's signs are for downward momentum also)-I will either go in for a short trade in another couple days, or wait til the bigger countdowns get closer to done. If this plays out the way it looks, the bigger countdown is coming very soon.

Best to everybody-trade smart if you're going to trade the next couple weeks. Be fast like Frixxxx, cause any trade in here is quite risky right now.

Agreed, I missed my bailout last week and took the hit but am not taking the chance on tomorrow. Went to the G and have 1 move left for a quick hop back in, if we get the sell off, in a few days.

Well, I'm still watching (and counting). We're on 8 of 9 in a countdown in DeMark system. Because point 3 of the countdown (1/22) blew through previous support (on the chart above), and if today closes below closing price on the 25th, and and and a couple more factorss play out through Monday :notrust:-we have a high probability of dropping below yesterdays close, maybe within 2 weeks from now, maybe take longer. (DeMark system-somewhat complex, but a 13-countdown initiated if Monday plays out like I think it will). There may be some short term buy signals show up before the 13-count finishes, but right now, chances are I won't be buying in for awhile yet. Too high risk.

Well, today is the 9th day of a 9-day countdown, and the trend holds. To undo the trend, today would have to skyrocket further up and close above the close from 4 days ago (approx 1091). Doesn't look like that's going to happen. Depending on how the next 1-3 days play out-new signals I'll be looking for-I may go in or stay riiiight where I am, and wait for the bigger countdown to come.

Getting run over by that darn train was another great experience in the line of many train hits - but I'm already rejuvenated and set to get on with the bull market. This is going to be a really big money year after the March bounce off. I don't want to miss a single day.
