nasa1974's Account Talk

O yea, sick leave! Better to use at full price in conjunction with a three day weekend.

You bet, until they pay at least .50 on a dollar at retirement, I'm getting face value for ALL mine. Some folks still don't understand, say you have 2080 hrs and retire, you get an extra 1%. Now let's say you burn that 2080 your last year, you're still in pay status and you get the extra 1% anyway and a year off!

You go when you are ready to go! You can do your remaining time standing on your head!!! (Sounds like your serving time) Don't let the Bas$*?! get you down!!!

I need to vent a little. I oversee the onsite contractor that maintains the high voltage systems here (138,000 volts down to 2400 volts). Well my COTR (Contracting Officer's Technical Representative) tossed me under the bus today. Anyway, I was planning to retire June 1st but now I am so ticked off I am looking at March 1st. It comes down to $40 a month difference if I go 3/1 vs. 6/1 or $480 a year. Any suggestions. Hold those thought's I'm going for another beer.
Go for another beer.

You're this close ride it out for all it's worth. Go when you are ready.....
The financial regret of my '06 retirement has been that I hadn't waited the extra three months to go out at end of year.
Then I remember why I was leaving after only 11 years & I am quite content .....

The thing is, no rash decisions for sudden occurances.

Your years with NASA have given you experience & knowledge you can use these next few months.
This situation may find itself turned around before May arrives.... How about hot coals (of honey) on this instigator's head?!? :)

Thanks everyone. I have calmed down. I have been stepped on many times and that came with the territory. But this was the first time I got tossed under the bus and got run over. I have 5 months sick leave saved up but won't use it. Thanks for the idea though. Sick Leave is the only thing that can add months to my retirement package. I'm CSRS and at 41 years 11 months I am maxed out. If I retire in June my sick leave puts me at 42 years 1 month. If I decide to go in March instead I would have 41 years 10 months government service. The difference in pay would be $40.00 in my retirement check. I have to decide is it worth $40 more a month to put up with this BS. I guess if I do stick it out until June I can add a few more bucks to my TSP account. Thanks again everyone.

41 years and 10 months is 502 months. 3 more months is a time increase of 0.6%. I don't know what % increase $40/month is; But that equates, for example, to 1 or 2 nice bottles of wine per month OR $480/year which could be a gym/club membership ~2 round trip flights per year. As a youngin' I'd say put in the 3 more months; but if I was in your shoes I know another 3 months would be damn tough!!!

Congratulations! At least you are that close to the end of the the tunnel....I don't see a lick of light anywhere!

NASA, just take another look at your autotracker position tomorrow, have a beer, take a sick day or two when you darn well please for the next 3 months, and then smile when the door doesn't hit on your way out.

NASA, ps great to see you in the top 5 on the tracker.

nsurf9,

Thanks. More luck than anything else. Now the trick is to stay there and stay lucky. Sure do not want what happened last year when I fell $20K off my high mark. Last year on the Tracker I finished with a -4.23%. A nice turn around for sure. Got to be smarter this time around. Hope to see you near the top again soon.

OK! So how do we play out February. Very carefully. The S fund has had only 4 years that finshed positive since 2001. They were 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2011. If you were 100% in C, S or I since 2001 you would have lost some very big numbers. The only fund that has been consistant in February since 2001 is the F fund. Next week we have a bond sale. Let's be smart.

Gotta be nimble these days, NASA! You're doing pretty well on the Autotracker I see.

I doubt you're going to stay in the S Fund all year. Get in and out at the right times, and you'll beat the market for sure.

Good luck!

John

Thanks JR. That is the key. Get in and out at the right time. Sure hope I can. Sure hope all of us do.

Govexec.com has changed their format. Not a fan of the new format but I guess I will get used to it. Here is the latest and greatest.
