By Kellie Lunney klunney@govexec.com March 25, 2011

This story has been updated.
Top career officials are being asked to give up their pay raises in a move some suspect is part of President Obama's two-year governmentwide pay freeze. "We've heard from members that it's happening," said Bill Bransford, general counsel at the Senior Executives Association. "We have not officially heard from anyone and don't know the specific facts."

Lights, camera, action in the 'Temple of Secrets'
By Edmund L. Andrews National Journal March 25, 2011

"In a stunning if overdue leap into the modern media age, the Federal Reserve announced on Thursday that it will start holding televised press conferences to explain its monetary policy.
The first briefing, by Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, will be after the Fed's next policy meeting on April 27. After that, Bernanke will hold briefings after every other policy meeting -- in other words, about once a quarter..."

The Real Reason Gas Prices Are Soaring

By CHARLES WALLACE Posted 7:00 AM 03/28/11

"Have you ever wondered why when you go to the gas station to fill up the family car, the price of gas at the pump has just jumped 25 cents a gallon over the past three days? Perhaps you thought the oil companies were just being greedy. Or you believed the nightly news pundit who said that gas prices went up because the crisis in Libya was affecting supplies of oil. One professional oil trader says that you'd be wrong on both counts..."

Hey crws,

I work in appliances so the youngsters pretty much stay away. I have heard that a couple stores are testing the use of something similar to an Ipad with a credit card swipe on it. Supposed to replace the cash register.

TSP delays Roth option
By Emily Long elong@govexe.com March 28, 2011

"The Thrift Savings Plan will delay its planned rollout of a Roth 401(k) option to allow federal payroll offices to adapt to the changes, officials said on Monday during a monthly meeting of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board. The TSP in 2009 began preparing for the introduction of a Roth 401(k) plan, which would allow employees to invest income that already has been taxed and therefore would not be taxed upon withdrawal. The Roth option, originally scheduled for January 2012, now will be delayed several months for additional planning and testing, according to Renee Wilder, TSP's director of research and strategic planning..."

Short-term funding measures have agency budget officials finding ways to save
By Meghan McCarthy National Journal March 28, 2011

"As Congress inches its way closer to a final deal -- or a government shutdown -- over 2011 spending, federal agencies have already been forced to make do with less and prepare for the worst.
Thanks to the three short-term government funding bills that have passed since the start of fiscal 2011, federal agencies have been required to fund their year-long budget in pieces, instead of planning for a full year of spending. That means agency budget officers have had to be conservative with their funds, in some cases holding off on hiring new employees to fill vacancies and slowing down grants or other contracts that require up-front government funding. The latest funding bill expires on April 8..."

Today finished better than yesterday. Stayed on the positive side between 3 and 4. Made up for yesterday's loss. Broke even, sort of, and still slightly ahead of Birch.:nuts:

So you like, then?
I'm thinking of something for some variety and a couple extra bucks.

Well with only two trading days left for the month and the quarter we may actually finish on a positive note. We can only hope. :D

So far for the month the F fund is down 3 cents, C fund up 18 cents, S fund up 53 cents and the I fund is down 51 cents.

For the quarter all funds are currently up from the beginning of the year.

Good luck today.

Democrats say only $6 billion separates sides in budget talks
By Billy House and Humberto Sanchez National Journal March 30, 2011

"The difference between a government shutdown or not might come down to just $6 billion in a $3 trillion-plus budget.
Senate Democrats asserted on Tuesday that the two sides are only $6 billion apart from a deal to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends on September 30, and urged House Republicans to come to the Senate to hash out a compromise.
"We are ready to find common ground," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev..."
