MrJohnRoss' Account Talk

I may get a sell signal tonight. Will have to wait and see. I have been gone all day and get back and WHAM! Do you think your system will trigger a sell?

There's a pretty good chance that I will get a sell signal on my new indicator. Waiting for the final numbers to come in...

Thank you for your kind words Guchi. I hope I'm able to help as many people as possible who read my thread.

If you are holding AAPL, watch your trailing stops. Huge bearish engulfing candlestick today.

NEVER fall in love with your stocks. I've seen too many people get financially crushed by falling in love with their company stock.

I'm not saying AAPL is going to crash. It's an excellent company. That being said, I have seen people who have put the majority of their money in their company stock and lost 80% of their nest egg.

Ever talk with a 65 year old who once had over $2.5 Million, and watched it turn into $300K? I have. It's sad. Dreams of retirement go *poof*, and there's no magic wand that can fix that. It's either work another 10 years, or retire with a significantly reduced standard of living. Your choice, sorry.

Like I've told my kids... we all make mistakes, but if you can learn from the mistakes of others, you'll be better off for the lesson.

Do you have any IFT's left? If I don't get a sell signal, I may hold out.

This will be my first IFT this month, so I'm fine. Let's just hope this correction is minor and short lived. Would love to see it switch back to a buy signal before month's end.

I've been there and done that. At the 2008 lows my oceanic account was down over $1M but I did not panic at the bottom and sell, instead I dumped even more cash into the lows and bought cheap prices. By the time April 2010 came around I was only $24K from making $2M off the March 09 bottom. Now I'm back on the come back trail trying to clear $3M after the nonsense of October 2011. At that point I was down another $1M in four weeks and was forced to do some selling because of my margin position - but I reinvested all my gains back into the market and now Ferdinand is pushing me toward my goal. I figure I'll hit the $3M by the end of May because the truck is loaded up and the bull is strong. Anyone who rode those turbulent times and continued to DCA into their TSP accounts have done just fine and should not change their strategies - adding cash at lower prices is the golden secret.

I'm going to go with you and go to safety tomorrow as well. You and I both are on the same page with earnings so far this year and I'd like to hold onto as much as I can. This back and forth stuff is killing me lol. Will be my first IFT as well so hopefully we can get a correction and jump back in before the months end.

You both may be surprised to know that we've been consolidating for the last two weeks - you just didn't realize it. Getting out of this bull in this stage of the cycle requires more courage than I have - may you see the light sooner than later.

Birch, wouldn't it have been nice to avoid the $1M loss in 2008 and the other $1M loss in Oct 2011? My simple timing system would have you up 36% more than you have right now since 1/1/2009. If you're at 2.5 now, that means you could be at 3.4. (Of course, that's assuming you were 100% S&P 500, which you weren't, I know). Keep up the DCA regardless, but I really think I can help you make a lot more.

Good luck MaStA. Hopefully we have a good year this year.

I appreciate your guidance and help! Everyone has different opinions and that is one thing I learned in the stock market. When you think you are making a good move, there is always someone else that is doing the opposite and thinking that they are making a good move.

Unfortunately no one can be 100% right, but this Greece stuff is a nasty storm cloud that has been hovering for a while now. Plus what I am up now for the year almost has gained back my 11.XX% loss from last year...I need to make sure I don't lose more this year and hopefully get back my losses from last year plus some.

i do not confess to know what i'm doing, but what i bolded is exactly what i did just following my gut. i was sick to see my account decline 50% and i stopped looking and contiued to stay and buy all along. my thinking was the same buy it low while it was low, i was not retiring anytime soon and i had time for it to come back. i actually plan to keep in equities when i retire in 2 yrs. hoping that i will not touch it anyway and live off my CSRS annuity initially anyway. i'm very frugal with my money and will not allow myself to get overextended with debt. thnx MB

Your're way cool and obviously very disciplined. Tracking the funds down to the lows in March '09 provided some excellent prices for accumulation. They bottomed at C fund of $7.86, S fund of $9.06, and the I fund of $10.27. Those days were a generational low - never to return. Dollar cost averaging was the way to go - simply throwing good money down that rabbit hole and accumulating more shares has paid off. It's classic in investing.
