Market Talk / October 1st - 7th

Columbus Day, celebrated next Monday 10/9, is a Federal Holiday. TSP office is closed. ..not to be surpised they haven't posted it yet considering when I called them last week to ask why the site had confirmed an ift, yet had it posted wrong a day later, I was told, among other things, that the market doesn't close until 6pm EDT......:worried:
I don't recall them ever NOT closing on a Fed Holiday - they're office/clerical workers, right??
So we jump from Friday noon to Tuesday noon.....

If the market is open, but the TSP site is close for Monday, we won't see any change in G, F, C, S, I price until Tuesday, right? :)

That's exactly the way it's supposed to happen in a bull marked. Down in the morning and up the rest of the day with a push into the close. (Time has come to bury the bears.)

Didn't you hear....The funeral has been put on hold!

They can close for a week and it doesn't bother me. What I'm interested in is that at $240 per thousand board feet the spot price of lumber is now at its lowest level since June 2003. Think of the ripple ramifications.

Lumber prices tumbling.
Housing starts slashed.
Oil price falling.
Interest rates steady.
Jobs - well, number of full-time jobs is down, even though unemployment rate is down. I think the "unemployment rate" numbers are being juggled just before the election.

Everything seems to be saying the economy is slowing down, but not quite yet in reverse. Perhaps a little while longer, and then WHAM! Into recession.

little, bald-headed guy on bloomberg made the call just after noon today, live from the trading floor, " markets will probably resume upward trend next week, maybe even going in to the close today"..this guy is good

Google thinking of buying YouTube?! I hear murders and executions show good signs for the economy.

Isn't Google welcoming a litany of copywrite lawsuits... seems like that's a dark road to travel. Just saw this one as kinda weird.

Flash Gordon,

It's 1500 hours - do we have enough fuel to achieve warp speed? I've seen a couple bloody towels drift by - bears must be on the bail and jumping off.

Interesting factoid:

--------------NYSE ----AMEX-----NASDAQ
New Highs --- 131 ----- 51 ----- 119

-------------- NYSE ----AMEX----NASDAQ
New Lows -- 15 ----- 16 ----- 43

The rally is not over. More "new highs" than "new lows". This is just a breather for a day.

Market Hits Overhead Resistance

by Carl Swenlin

The structure that has dominated the price pattern for nearly three years is a rising trend channel, which I have drawn on the S&P 500 chart below. As you can see, the price index has once more encountered the top of that channel, and that resistance will probably prevent any significant price advance until overbought conditions have been allowed to correct.

That is not to say that a major price reversal is imminent. It is certainly possible, but it is also possible that prices will dribble along the bottom of the overhead trend line for several months as happened prior to the summer price lows.

There are two things that argue for a major price decline. First, is the seasonal weakness that the market traditionally experiences in October, and the other is the 4-Year Cycle lows, also expected in October.

Be sure not to miss the statement about how negative everything is - that proivides potential for higher highs. Along with a new all-time high for the Dow the otherday, we also had a CBOE Put/Call ratio of 1.18. No one believes - which means we got a long way to go yet on the upside.

The equity market is always, by default, in a bear market. The fewer bulls the better I like it - let me ride that monster bull.

The 4-year cycle has passed, and we may or are in the first quadrant of a new 4-year cycle that will add strength to suggest a center point 3rd wave of at least intermediate degree is in the process of unwinding. Let'er rock.

Will be closing the thread for this week and starting a new one!
Thanks for all the posts!
