Jkenjohnson's Account Talk

Re: Signal

JKen, please don't take this as busting your chops, just trying to better understand your system. For the last 5 trading days, W4500 has lost about 4.5% or so. How big of a market change is needed to change the signal from buy to sell?

It is hard to say. The system is tied to the percentage change and the vix at the close of the day. There are a lot of variables. No system can work within the parameters of Greece Debt and now this Spain crap.

I wish I could feel a little panic but it just ain't in me - my dividends are working their magic.

I know what you mean. I don't need my money anytime soon. It can sit where it's at until the market recovers. I changed my bi-weekly contribution to 50/50 C/S

Re: Signal

Today was a good old southern "arse whooping", to the tune of -2.38%. If I keep going south, I won't be doing much better than mutual fund managers and the premium services on the internet. :D

System is now up only 7.80%, down form 13.33% in March. I sure wish I had a crystal ball, but I don't. I really don't know where we go from here. Spain is now Greece and the materials sector (Alcoa, etc.) is supposed to report poor earnings this week, so we may go down even more this week. If I throw in the towel tomorrow, the market will turn around. Damed if you do and damned if you don't. I will calculate my signal later on tonight and post it.

Today sucked for all invested that's for sure...especially since yesterday sucked as well.

At least Alcoa just released positive news that their earnings were better than expected. After hours trading is up over 5.5% for them now. I hold 20 whole shares of Alcoa and I am down quite a bit since I bought those 20 stocks prior to me knowing anything about stops. That is fine...I'll hold onto them and see what the future (years) brings. Maybe I will make a buck lol.

You have to start somewhere. I think Birchtree said he started many years ago with $500, and has now built a portfoilio worth 3 million dollars (plus or minus).

Must be nice :)

I invest more now since I have learned a bit since buying AA and OCLR. I have lost a little on both, but I'm just riding the waves on them since I only put $500 total into both of them. I'm considering buying TNA at the open with my Roth today and seeing how the day turns out and possibly selling before the close for a quick gain (hopefully). I still have some time to think and do some more research but yesterday TNA seems to have bottomed out at the same area as it did on March 6th and it rebounded on March 7th and on until the recent downturn. It looks like it may be following that pattern again so this could definitely be a good place to buy and possibly hold for a few days/week if it rides back up.

Yesterday would have been the day to buy TNA. My guess is it will gap up at open, and then it is a guess as to where it will go from there. Be careful, as any negative news can drop TNA's price like a "hot potato". Trust me, I am down 7% on a recent TNA purchase.

I'm not sure I have the stomach to invest/gamble with TNA or TZA. I bought 100 shares of TNA last August at $62. I watched it drop to $28, and then recover back to the low $60s. THAT was a wild ride!

Yeah I'm wishing I would have bought it at the close, but with how the last two days turned out I didn't know how today was going to be.

I still consider myself new so I probably will be messing with something I shouldn't lol, but I see what kind of quick return it can give and I've also seen what it can take away quickly. The hard part is riding stocks through closing hours and not selling prior to the close because what happens overnight you cannot do anything about.

I may hold off...we shall see.

I would have had a 7% stop loss on it, but that is just me. Anyway, I'm gald you got your money back.

The only problem with a 7% stop on a 3x investment is, there is a good chance that could get hit inrtraday, stop you out, and recover all in the the course of a day, or couple of days.
