Re: Signal

That's a tough one, but I personally would not. It is a little late to be chasing profits. With that said, it will probaly go up another 10%. I will say that I am getting a little antsy about a potential correction - but there just isn't any news right now to cause a sell off. Be patient and hope for a 5% or so pullback and then maybe you can enter. I know it is hard watching everybody else making money - I have been there before.
Oh, its a lot harder than hard, especially if you missed the October run, sat it out worrying about Europe throughout November and then, still worrying about Europe, got out early in December like I did. Geesh! Sometimes it sucks to be conservative! On the bright side, I haven't lost over that time frame and actually am up probably 5%. Glad so many are doing so well -- hope it continues and those of us sitting on the sidelines eventually get an attractive entry point.

Between Europe and the Congressional dabacle I was down over $100,000 at on point. I have still not gained all of it back, but am close.

Ouch!!! That makes me feel a whole lot better. Thanks for putting it in perspective for me Ken.

Good God...down $100k...I think my worth isn't much higher than that...and you are mad because of the federal pay freeze haha. Heck I'm in the military and our pay raises don't even keep up with inflation. At least they haven't since obummer took over.

Re: Signal

He opined that Israel may attack in the spring. Journalists pulled out their wiki and translated that to Apr-Jun. Obviously his remark probably has some purpose.

Re: Signal

Don't worry - if Iran goes down the markets will roar because there will be one less evil left in the world - certainty will prevail.

I hope Iran does not have any nukes to fire back at Israel. Does Israel have nukes?

Re: Signal

Thanks to y'all for your regular messages, insights, and discussions about TSP, Markets and related world affairs. I read much of it & really am grateful. I do hope we keep it to that and try to keep trashy-mouthed opinion & name-calling (and feelings that conjures) down; I took have lots of opinions about lots of stuff that I could slide in or spew, yet don't think that appropriate for this site in general.
For one, I'm a strong bible Christian, 9-year Army vet, proud professional Public Servent, pretty well-educated, experienced person who tried to learn and think and be objective -- and I respect and like President Obama in general, the extremely critical and tough job (bags of crappola) he's had to deal with.. certainly given that there's realistically only one other choice. I might voice "names" for those I rail against too, but not here in this type of venue.
Another thought I have on the "pay" comments... my Dad was career AirForce NCO; I was in ROTC and the Army throughout the 80's up to '92, and have a number of family members and friends actively serving in various branches of Armed Services now... I believe the active-duty members have been treated very fairly in that regard, in recent decade and especially in contrast to the 70's up to mid-80's. There have been steady and good increases in pay and benefits that have significantly improved relative pay, benefits and quality of life for military members since then... and moreso than for the Civil Service members of the federal government over that time, especially in recent few years.
And, sincerely, thank you for your service MaSta. And I too hope for a jump-in time soon before a continued equities trend upward.

Thank you for your service as well. I'm just saying if you go back and look prior to Obama I was receiving 3.X% pay raises and the year he took office it dropped to 1.X%. Either way I don't care for him because all he has done is blame Bush for everything instead of making all of the changes he promised. Furthermore I am a Republican because based on my Christian views I don't believe abortion and gay MARRIAGE is something we should allow. I'm fine with gays having some form of a union, but to call it marriage takes away from what marriage means to so many. I also believe in gun rights and a bunch more that makes me conservative, but I don't want to destroy someones thread lol.

You are right, the military is much more appealing now than it was before I was born. I gave up a lot of opportunities I had to serve my country and I didn't have to do it because I was some 2.0 GPA high school student with no future. I did very well and could of had a full ride through Florida's tuition scholarships, but I chose to serve my country after 9/11 happened.

Civil service folks make AMAZING money unless they are just starting out and are a GS-5 or something. I've met some people that make a lot of money and if I understand it correctly you pretty much always will have your job and can apply/move around to different openings as they come available. In my opinion the military folks give up a lot more freedom and can be made to work 12 hour shifts where as civil service employees can go home the minute they are scheduled to leave and if they don't they get paid overtime (which military members don't). I'm not hating here, but it seems you made a point that civil service people aren't getting much compared to military. I'm pretty sure the benefits are pretty similar in regards to healthcare, leave, etc.

I've been in eight years and I think I make decent money, but obviously I would always like to make more. I'm almost done with my Bachelor's in Computer Science and maybe I'll apply to be an officer. Currently I am an OTS recruiter so I know how competitive it is so I may never get in, who knows...

Sorry to babble here about this, but we are all here for the discussion I hope. :)

Re: Signal

S fund finished up 1.92%.

System is up 22.5% since Oct 7.
System is up 11.6% YTD.

Why is this?

We have all known for a while that stocks were cheap, so I don't think everyone would all of a sudden start buying based on that.
A few good economic reports came out - not likely the cause in my opinion.
Congress and senate problems solved - no.
European problems solved - no.
USA's debt under control - no.
Fear of being left behind after the rally started - maybe.
Earnings have been mostly good but some not so good.
Are we out of the recession - not quite.
Media hype - possible.
Combination of some of the positive items listed above - maybe.

What do you guys think? I'm not complaining about the rall - just don't quite trust it.

Re: Signal

I don't know if there is an official term for this, but I think a factor is that people are tired of bad news and want to believe in some good news. People want there to be a recovery. That might go contrary to "indicators", but perception can create its own reality.

Wishful thinking?
