I'm sure there is a contingent of Navy Seals in the area waiting for the call to protect the Suez Canal with the help of the Egyptian Army.

I would be bothered if the tooth fairy refused to come to our country.

All things considered it is amazing that all parties involved have maintained their composure as well as they have, the army in particular. Given time this whole thing may well work itself out quietly, as such things go. On the other hand in such things there are always parties which will want to set things off to further their own interests. Perhaps these pro Government demonstrators are just that. Surely there are more than a few "Fundamentalist" factions who would profit from a blood bath.[/QUOTE]

Question for the board- Would the demonstrations in Egypt have happened without our interventions in IRAQ? Were we actually successful in planting the seeds of democracy in the Middle East?

Over the last 2 weeks I have been wondering why Egypt has not devolved into scenes of USA flag burning and chants of ‘Death to America’ which has been oh so common in demonstrations in the Middle Eastern countries since the cold war. Lets face it, we are in two wars in the region and whether we admit it or not, these wars have a major ideological element of Western values vs Islamic values. Ok, so we didn’t start the fight or the ideological rhetoric, but we did embrace it when it was thrust upon us and we brought the whole world into the conflict (‘With Us or Against Us’, War on Terrorism (which meant Islamic terrorist), Homeland Security (Gitmo), etc…).

So what has changed? Did we win the War on Terrorism somehow? Did the people of these Islamic countries suddenly embrace Western values? Maybe it’s a little of both and Facebook and other information sources (al jezeera) are the technology that allowed people to feel empowered about voicing their dissatisfaction over their leaders. (There’s a reason freedom of speech is the first amendment to the US constitution.)

It could also be that our policy chances in fighting the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts have defused the ideological rhetoric of us vs them and have allowed us to show them that we are here to help, but only if you help yourself as well. That is a powerful tool and as long as we are in the region and adding both moral and physical support to the idea that if you help yourself to freedom from violence, we will support it without demanding you give up your culture, then maybe the region will choose peace and cooperation with the west. It’s a change for us from being a bully (with a gun) in the region to being a wise counselor while still policing/protecting the region for/from violent insurgence. Not saying I agree with everything, but just trying to understand why there have been no expressions of USA hate in a region where we occupy, under arms, two countries with similar values as Egypt.

Below are two interesting TED videos on Non-zero sum politics and the evolution of violence in human history from a contemporary perspective. They gave me hope even as Robert Wright was expressing feelings, humorously, that the apocalypse was here.

Robert Wright on optimism- taped Feb 2006

Steven Pinker on the myth of violence- taped March 2007

I’m still waiting for the financial apocalypse. May it never get here.
Enjoy.

What are the chances that the US and Egypt planned all along for him to hold off stepping down until today to get the natives all fired up in Iran.

http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2011/02/11/iran-marks-revolution-anniversary/

"And days before the “Green Movement” in Iran plans to put on its own demonstration, in solidarity with Egypt’s pro-democracy movement, and a march to call for changes in Iran as well."

Just callin it like I see it

I think he was holding out so he could get all of his cash out of the banks and into his luggage so he can take off with it all.

After he's gone...Egypt cleans up.

People clear the ground at Tahrir Square in Cairo February 12, 2011. Egyptians woke to a new dawn on Saturday after 30 years of autocratic rule under Hosni Mubarak, full of hope after achieving almost unthinkable change, with the army in charge and an uncertain future ahead.

Hey! Maybe these wonderful peaceful meaningful scenes of common folk cleaning up after themselves could be used to educate and empower future attendees of leftist radical progressive rallies here. Just so they don't continue to behave as entitled people, ya know. Like the trashy people did at the Stewart and Sharpton rallies. And the Immaculation attendees.:D
