E-cigarettes a 'gateway' to harder drugs, study says

Published September 04, 2014Reuters

Like conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes may function as a "gateway drug" that can prime the brain to be more receptive to harder drugs, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.
The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, add to the debate about the risks and benefits of electronic cigarettes, the increasingly popular devices that deliver nicotine directly without burning tobacco.
"With e-cigarettes, we get rid of the danger to the lungs and to the heart, but no one has mentioned the brain," coauthor Dr. Eric Kandel of Columbia University, whose findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, said in a telephone interview.
In laboratory studies, the researchers showed that "once mice and rats are on nicotine, they are more addicted to cocaine" after being introduced to that drug, said Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar of the University of Louisville, who was not involved in the study but chaired a 10-member American Heart Association panel on the impact of e-cigarettes.
That was true even when the mice received nicotine without burning tobacco, Kandel, a 2000 Nobel laureate for his work on memory, told Reuters Health in a telephone interview.
The findings by Kandel and his wife, Columbia University researcher Denise Kandel, expand on her earlier work on nicotine as a "gateway drug," a theory she first reported on in 1975. [more]

I hear ya burro, I've heard of people driving down the street only to get hit by another person, but I can't stop driving to work everyday.

I appreciate the article, but like anything else, if you're going to do something. do it well, safe, and responsibly.

i refuse to live my life cringing whenever i plug in my cell phone, my car has never blown up when i turn the key in the ignition, i don't wear a blast shield when i twist the dial on my stove, and i've never had a bowl full of crap explode all over the bathroom when i pushed the handle on the toilet. well, one time it did, but it wasn't the toilet's fault.

to each their own fears i guess. live and let live i say.

there you have it kids, hobbies and hobby related items are bad, especially if you live on base. and whaterever you do, don't ever put anything with a battery (like a phone) in anything made of flamable material (like your pocket). thanks for doing your part to keep our soft fluffy marshmellow community safe.

Batteries should be respected, I know someone who hooked up a defective charger to an e-cig battery, it exploded and shot out of his hand like a rocket, spewing melted-on-fire battery-liquid all over the place, burning the carpet.

Not long ago, some guy put his mod e-cig batteries in backwards, it exploded in his mouth, shattering his teeth.

Some batteries have fuses, not all do...

Cellular phones, two-way radios and many hobby-related items have caused injuries, started fires and even explosions due to the incorrect charging of the batteries involved with these products.

also, i learned this weekend that atomizers only cost $1.50. so why was i spending $3 worth of time and $6 worth of good vodka to clean them? some smart alek on here will probably post a chart showing the cost-benefit analysis in full detail with colored lines, but i already know the answer: just screw in a new atomizer and drink the vodka fool!

easy peasy, make it so, and all that other cheesy crap from 1970's tv shows. now get me some more sahara and absolut!

and in a couple weeks i should have enough spare scratch to order my vaping station from kave for my birthday.

yep, definately movin' on up.

ok, tank review:

kanger mt3s with the metal covering are the hot ticket. they are the same as the t3s and hold 3ml of liquid without the clear glass graduated cylinder syringe metering aesthetic. i have the evods in the car now with the 1000mah batteries with some flavored juice in the glove box. when they die i'm just going to toss them out the window.

i'm narrowing equipment down to only mt3s/t3s, they are compatible with the same atomizers, and with ego-t 650mah batteries. that's only 3 parts to vape, with a choice of 2 different tank styles. i feel like a naked leona helmsley staring at a closet full of shoes. and i'm burning through existing eliquid before searching for a new supplier. sahara is my favorite. i hated those
too harsh, in analog tobacco and was a red boy, but in eliquid everything is muted a little so now sahara is good and red tastes like melted wax. don't ask how i know what melted wax tastes like.

also the creamsicle eliquid at 1.2% i got for a free sample with a previous order tastes like licking a hospital examination table that's been cleaned with a citrusy solvent. don't ask how i know what hospital examination tables taste like either. but i'm not throwing any of it away because it has perfectly good nicotine in it.

i have 3 colors i run now, black silver and blue, and the longer mt3s do fit in my carry case it you stuff them in there cockeyed. that's 3 batteries with tanks attached, 1 in pocket and 2 in case, plus 3 tanks spare in case, with charger in case. it totally rocks. i don't have to drag around my whole box of nicotine now, high class, movin' on up.

i think tom should have a custom tsptalk blend eliquid mix made up. it could taste like money. don't ask me how i know what money tastes like either, that is a long story.

here is all my vape stuff. the liquids are 2 of my tobacco flavor favorites comparable to camels and marlboro reds. also i have a coffee/vanilla mix for morning drive and a cherry cola mix for evening commute. last time i ordered they sent some free creamsicle flavor i haven't tried yet. running low new atomizers and have half a evod tank that went down for spare parts. i don't use the lanyards much because i might as well just wear a fanny pack too at that point, gay. two of the bottles hold used atomizers soaking in vodka to clean them to switch out if i run out of new ones. the fun part about cleaning tanks and changing atomizers every weekend is i get to drink vodka.

with all that money i could probably buy a nice wristwatch, but what would be the point? every time i checked it, it would just say 'time to vape'.

pretty soon i will be storing it all in a cool wood box and just carry around a couple of charged spares and tanks.

E-cig, best thing since.....thong underwear...on a woman that is..... Smoked 1.5-2 packs/day for 33 years and back on 15 May after buying a pack of cigs, decided to stop by the vapor store acrosss the street. I was amazed and decide to give it a shot and quit the cancer sticks. Yes I have cheated and smoked a cig every now and then since then and finished up the (1) pack just the other day. Not bad, 1 pack in 3 months!!!! The $130 dollar vape investment + juice periodically is nothing compared to the minimum $50/week cig purchase. Been 12 weeks since last pack of cigs purchase = $600 - vape cost = no brainer + easier to breath. Now I can go to the casino's more often.

If your a smoker and want or have an inclination to quit I suggest to go visit a vapor store - Kevin

yeah buddy. i found my way eventually over the internet to joyetech and kanger, wasted some money and time in the process, but it wasn't the first i've wasted money and time so not at a bad deal. ecigs are da bomb.

what do you use?

So puff away.

i wasn't going to stop anyways. at least not anytime soon. maybe in the future i will cut back on the heavy 2.4% nic mix to something lighter but for now it is the only thing that keeps me juiced up enough to not desire a real smoke.

and i've quit buying new vape stuff. 4 batteries, 6 tanks, 12 new atomizers (plus 6 currently in use), and vape about 3 mil per day. i have enough ejuice to last well into october.

i would like to get 2 more batteries for when these start dying and 4 new tanks of a different style to compare and about 20 atomizers. then i would be ready for thermo nukeler war with pleny of nicotine unless the electricity is of for an extended period of time or the 12 volt in the car runs out of gas. it that happens then i'm probably going to get so frustrated i start killing zombies but i hear that's ok after the apacolypse anyways.

tanks are my latest issue. i way prefer t3s over evod2 or ev9d glass. i'm going to order some mt3s next time. then maybe i will settle on a permanent set of parts and inventory.

(just trying to keep the vape stuff in the vape thread and out of the woodwork discussion).
