2007 has been a good year so far, but I was trying to beat my Jan (+4.3) this month, but that’s not going to happen now. I was close, but no cigar! I think April will be my 2nd best month YTD, but it’s still a little too early to tell. I was just wondering who will reach the 20% YTD mark first for 2007.

I know you hear a lot of folks on this web site make a lot of claims, but my account TSP balance sheet has gone up by a factor of three since March 2003. And I sure haven’t put that much into my account in the form of deposits! I have been a TSP investor since it first came out in the mid 80’s. Good luck with your TSP investments! :cool:
 
The US GDP report just released reveals out economy grew at the slowest annual pace in four years. The 1.3% was about 28% less than the consensus. This news along with the continued sub-prime meltdown mess will continue to hurt markets today. Despite this bad news, the earnings reports continue to look good for most companies. So, this should help cushion the markets despite the bad GDP number.

If you’re sitting on the sidelines, it might be a good time to move in stocks by COB today, but I will probably sit this one out until sometime next week. This weekend, I plan on taking the wife and Nikon camera and enjoy a relaxing spring photo safari in the surrounding mountains of Los Angeles. I’m thinking about starting up some private stock investing. I found that you can invest in one of 9 sectors of the S&P 500. They call these EFT’s: Select Sector SPDR’s. I personally don’t like spiders as insects, but I think SPDR’s give the investor an easy way to target select markets vice the wider S&P 500. Anyway, I’m not sure if anyone in here dabbles in personal investments other than our TSP, but I think I will give it a shot. Good luck with your TSP investments! :cool:

The nine Select Sector funds are:
The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund - XLY
The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund - XLP

Do it inside of a Roth IRA if you can - you'll have more flexibility in choice and tax free distribution and you won't get hurt the first time out. GL.
 
Good News
ISM (Institute for Supply Management) increased over the 51 consensus to 54.7 which is good news. Anything over 50 indicates an expanding factory sector.

Plus more good news, Avon 1q Profit soars, Medco Health Solutions 1q profit surges, Oil prices drop in Asian Trading, Procter and Gamble 3qtr up 14%. And Mr. Bernanke made no comment on interest rate moves or monetary policy this morning which is good in my book.

Bad News
Pending home sales report just released dropped -4.9% and I have noticed that this number is all over the charts for the last five reports, -.5%, +4.9%, -4.1, +.7 and -4.9. When you average it out for the last 5 months, it comes to -3.9%.

Plus more bad news, ADM 3 qtr profit misses expectations, Venezuela Seizes last private oil fields, Circuit City pulls outlook and their stocks sinks…

So, overall I read more good than bad and the broader S&P 500 has been down for the last week, so I’m inclined to move in. So, as of May 1st 2007 100% “C” Fund today’s COB. Good luck with your TSP investments! :cool:

Economic report just released indicates a little weaker number on new jobs and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.5%. This should made the fed happy and its good news for stocks. I’m currently in the “I” fund, but whatever is good for the USM usually carries over. I was planning on pulling out of stocks today, but I’m in the hold mode for now. The Nikkei index is suppose to wake up on May 6th, finally! Have a great weekend and good luck with your TSP investments! :cool:

Asian stocks are looking good 4 hours into the opening bell in Tokyo. I have pretty much made up my mind to jump out of the “I” fund stocks COB 5-7-07. I think a lot of investors may be inclined to start taking their profits off of the table very soon. The resulting downward trend will probably be one wild ride, so I’m jumping ship soon, but won’t make my final decision until tomorrow morning.

For 2007, the maximum regular employee contributions are limited to 15.5K. But, for those who are at least 50 in the calendar year, you can contribute an additional 5K for a total of $20,500 for 2007. For the folks under FERS vice CSRS, you need to make sure you don’t max out before PP24 to ensure you don’t loose any matching funds. I’m pretty sure this is correct, but if I’m wrong please let me know, Thanks!

You are correct. If contributing the max, divide $15,500 by 26 pay periods, and contribute a set amount of $596 per pay period. Much easier than managing the %. You are allowed to contribute a set dollar amount vs a % each pay period. If you max out early, you miss the match.
 
The DOW is down today?? I had to hit refresh twice on Bloomberg before I realized I wasn’t seeing an illusion!! I have been investing in and out of stocks since the FERS TSP started in the mid 80’s and this record has been the mother of all DOW records!! I still won’t believe it until the markets close today. When I started up with the TSP in the 1980’s, my GS9 step 1 pay was only $21,804 per year. Back then, you could only put in a max of 10 percent and I can remember my friends thought I was nuts to do this. At that time, I just secured my first home loan and also had a car payment to boot. And oh yeah, my 1st kid was born in 1985. To this day, I still don’t see how we managed to get by. I really envy all of the new TSP folks out there who manage to max out their contributions, especially when they start out. It’s really tough, been there, done that, but it will give you a tremendous amount of financial security when you retire. I still have another six years before I reach my MRA, but I’m finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

the kicker is for FERS anyway is that if YOU i repeat YOU don't make anything of YOUR retirement, there won't be any. sure glad i have the CSRS with the option of TSP. the FERS people really need to make it count early and let it work for them overr the long haul. i keep telling a good friend of mine who came on 3 years ago to go ahead and live dangerous and put into the risky and let it ride, since he has father time on his side. i wish i had someone advising me 28 years ago !!!
 
When I was a kid, we use to play dodge ball. When the teachers weren’t watching, we would use a basketball instead of the soft rubber ball. The basketball would really get your attention if you got hit. But, the ones that really hurt were the shots that you didn’t see coming. So you always kept your head on a swivel looking for the next shot. I would highly recommend anyone in stocks right now to keep their head on a swivel and keep their eyes wide open. We’ve been floating on the upper peak of this awesome stock market wave and I just don’t see how it can go much higher. Anyway, I’m not going to jump back into the stock market ocean until this really high wave passes. Good luck with your TSP investments! :cool:
