TSP Poker Club

Since this group likes to throw around nicknames, I'm going to propose one for que:

Captain :usa2:

HOWEVER, it's a spreadsheet. It's little extra work to keep an original recipe sheet/range; and a separate sheet(s) where you've tinkered to your hearts delight.

This is the scoring I liked the best:
Poker League Calculator

interesting enough, the site claims this is the Pokerstar's method. Certainly doesn't match their home club method tho.

Points = 10 * [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)]
Where:
n is the number of entrants
k is the place of finish (k=1 for the first-place finisher, and so on)

And I'd modify it slightly to be:
Points = [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)] -1
Because I don't think last place should get any points. and the x10 was kind of arbitrary, it could be anything.

We are indeed moving into Phase 3, I'm glad to see even more progress since this morning. not there yet, but definite progress. But in terms of Phase 2, we aren't out of the woods until no hidden or unhidden dissatisfaction remains, that is a true statement. The Captain reported this morning that at that point we were still in Phase 2. Agreed. As long as one person (or barnacle) on the ship thinks that, we're still in Phase 2.

I stated I thought we were moving into (towards) phase 3 this morning, prior to the Captain's statement clarifying we weren't there yet. But I said what I said, when I saw the offer to step down without intentionally sinking the ship, and the statement was also made that lack of a manager would not necessarily and automatically lead to demise of the club, that it could survive without a manager. that information had not been made available earlier. those 2 statements gave me hope for club survival and so I said.

And I also saw last night that there had been unexpressed concerns about back-to-back nights, and that the true preference by the original requester for either Sunday OR Monday had not been met up til now. That modification of club operation at club member request was met last night by the (now) former club manager. Another step in the right direction that gave me hope. UNLESS there are members that really do want to have more than one tournament night a week, just not back to back. Is there anyone who is unhappy about Monday night being dropped now? I'm fine with it myself. I only ever wanted to play one night, even if there were 2 nights scheduled.

And I like having a managerless club, myself. I think we'll survive, unless lack of a manager makes it difficult to gain new members? If we need a manager to grant admission to new members, we may need to allow for some future modifications of the program, and reopen the conversation if needed. That can wait. for now. the former incumbent got a bit too irritable and high-handed when the members started taking on overt shared-responsibility for OUR club's wellbeing. Still, it's part of the growth process, the ship is still right side up and sailing in a better direction, though I believe too there are still some storm swells subsiding. I also want to believe we aren't in the eye of a hurricane. Cap'n says "Make it so, Mr. McCoy". KO, who's Mr. McCoy? Do we need a Mr. McCoy?

boom. there it is. a living breathing animal of its own. on sundays, sunday night, we got tonight. let thunder roll.

Truly impressive! :)

We should also answer whether we want to see if opening another PS room NOW (or for season TWO) would fix the stats question.

If we decide NOW, and the room still has no stats, it won't be a problem as k0n is also on stats duty. If the stats work, great. We can add k0n's stats to the 'official' stats at the end of the season. I say set a proper course for this ship and try a new room.

That particular idea would be ok by me. I just want a club so I can learn how to play this silly game well enough to beat somebody once in awhile. Need to hear from other people tho.

I finally put some skin into the game.

While we wait for the rest of the Members to speak, I've created a new club, it's called TSPtalk Poker Club, with Tom's approval. (Btw, Tom has also graciously offered to provide prizes, etc. No details just yet, still planning. Thanks Tom! :) )

With the Member's ("the Body's") approval/(or, perhaps, disapproval, if the Body remains silent), I expect (so far) the other differences will be:

  • A central, static, location for Club information (joining information, stats, scheduling, etc.)--a webpage of sorts. (Will speak with Tom about this.) A scrolling chat forum is not ideal.
  • Some TSPtalk flair (logos, color schemes) added to the room. (Again, ...Tom)
  • ~500 chip buy-ins instead of 1050 to allow new members or members with zero chips to instantly play without asking others for chips etc.
  • 3 month seasons instead of 12 months. (The only other option is 1 month.)
  • Multiple contact persons for issuing Club credentials/web-links with which are used to join the club.

The original room is still there as of this writing so time is not of the essence currently. However, the new room is functional now, it's just not visible to everyone until they officially become a member of it.

I may periodically (re-)post this and additional messages here until a more static communications platform is established.

Thanks

i think that is a great idea. how can i join?

Thanks burro. Appreciate that. I'll PM you the info. Maybe you can also give it out to others if they ask?

Nothing there yet but a cash table. Haven't started a tourney yet, obviously. And I may do some testing, so you can ignore any emails you may receive before we go 'official.' I think I can post a message like this in the room if others also decide to join early.

Thanks again.

P.S. For those that don't know about this: I would love to just post the code to join here in this thread, but internet search engines crawl this site. I don't think we want the general public masquerading as one, of, us, in our poker room. :)

EDIT: Also, the proper name of the club may not have been 'approved' by PS yet, so it may read 'Club# ....' instead of the actual name, for now.

This is what I propose for the new point system:
point system.png

Possible slight modifications could be to limit how many people get points, but keep the same scale. i.e., only top 50% get points, Or top 75%, etc. (PokerStars does top 15%, but for very large tournaments)

I've looked at multiple different scoring options, and talked to friends of mine who are far more involved in poker than I am, and based on their talks, this system made the most sense, and I got the basic curve from PokerStars them-self.

What do you guys think? Does it make intuitive sense to you? Should getting First in a 9 person tourney be twice as much as First in a 4 person tourney?

Thanks. 'Feels' reasonable to me. It'll be one of the things we'll have to make a decision on soon.

Anyway to do a chart like that for the current way PS does scoring...some players may want to see both options in that simplified, clear, concise format you've created, before deciding?

first off, thanks for your efforts on this, KO. great going. sounds to me like it makes sense , but me not being in the running for points especially, would rather the big scorers weigh in and have their opinions count the most, if they can agree which way or ways they'd like to see the numbers.

for comparison:
DEFAULT CLUB GAME POINT SYSTEM
point system.png

As you can see, there are 2 problems with it. 1st place in a 7 person tourney is worth more than 1st in a 9 person. And 1st place in an 8 person tourney worth more than 10, 12, 13, or 15 person tourneys! How ridiculous is that?
The 2nd problem is not many people get points, so the people who don't make it to the final 2 don't really have a metric for where they stand or whether they are improving or not.

I don't care what format you use as long as I am kicking the other unmentionable's ass.
