In biblical times if you were of a higher station you had the right to backhand someone of a lower station. If someone then turned the other cheek it posed a dilemma for the person who struck them. They could choose to strike them with their fist thereby challenging them to fight which in effect put them on the same social level. As I understand it this practice was, in effect, asking for equality.
