Steel_Magnolia's Account Talk

Again with a hat tip to JTH, here are the exponential moving averages for the F, C, S and I Funds. They are represented in 4, 7, 10, 13, 18, 24, 27, 33 and 39 EMAs in a ribbon format. What I am watching for here is when the ribbons lose or gain spacing and especially if they start to cross.

Yesterday I moved my funds to 40% each in C and S, and 20% in I Fund. Looks like my decision to go all in was okay but my division of funds could have used a little work.

I enjoy reading through the various sections of the ETF Prophet site. It has interesting commentary and great charts that break down the action. (Not as great as Tom's daily column but still pretty good.):toung:

Here is a portion of what one of the ETF Prophet columns said about yesterday's action.

Although we had two major news events today, the indices ended the day with modest gains. The SPY ended at the day high and is pushing above the psychologically important $120 level after hour. Will that trigger some buy stop tomorrow? We seem to lack the euphoric actions that mark a short term top. The trading had being centering around a push above a whole number on the S&P500 and after that it would back and fill in a 10pt range for a couple of days before stair stepping higher...

How does it feel making strong dollars? How long do you dare hold your position.
I'm still fully invested in equities, Birch. I did make an IFT today though. I'm thinking that the Fed's announcement on Wednesday will surely weaken the dollar, so I went from 40 C, 40 S, 20 I to a more balanced 33 C, 34 S, 33 I position.

Wish me luck, and have another cookie. Today they are chocolate drops.

Happy Daylight Savings Time Day! Not that I'm a proponent of DST. One of my Native American friends says it's like cutting one end off the blanket and sewing it on the other end to make it longer. And I tend to agree with her.

Anyway, here is my favorite reading and viewing of the weekend:

The Zacks weekend video talks about a v-shaped recovery, possible 1220 by Christmas, and that we're entering a positive cycle of income-growth-hiring-more income. For those of you with accounts outside of TSP, they also reported on a company called Discover Financial Services (DFS) that they said had up to a 60% upside potential.

Over on the ETF Prophet page, the Market Rewind column says:

...add to this parallel efforts abroad featuring Japan’s pledge to buy ETFs and REITs directly, and it’s mighty hard to ultimately argue against a continued bullish end-of-year run....

AND

...A most analogous periods run suggests an S&P 500 value of approximately 1,250 by year-end, plus-or-minus roughly 40 points seven weeks out....

The Market Rewind column also has a wonderful spreadsheet that picks apart the various ETF market sectors, including the TSP analogs of SPY, IWM and EFA. It doesn't reproduce well here so I highly encourage you to head over there to take a look at it.

But while you're here grab a cookie or two. I made the adult version of chocolate chip cookies, with rum and a touch of Kahlua added. Yum-m-m!

I personally don't like DST- what it means is with an hour commute it's always dark by the time I get home - even though I am within a mile walking distance from the bus stop to home it's questionable whether it's a good idea to do it. Even with a safe neighborhood, the street lighting in our subburb leaves a lot to be desired, and people do not look out for pedestrians.

Thanks for the visit, SB. DST seems to be a pain for lots of people. I wish we could just not switch back in the winter time. Stay the same all year.

And you stay safe out there! We don't know what we'd do without our poet laureate here on the MB!

Thanks for the CC Cookie, I took the one with no walnuts Extra Kahlua. YUMMY!

I wish the DST function would end.... We NA's know this is idiotic!

Thanks for the visit, my friend! I don't know what NA stands for but knowing you it's got to having something to do with computers! My son the computer code writer hates DST too.

Glad you liked the cookie! Someone asked me if I really made all the desserts I mention here. And the answer is that I've made them sometime in my life but usually not lately. :embarrest: I don't have that much energy. And all the steroid treatments I've taken since July have my figure looking much too matronly anyway!  But life is good, life is good.

A bit about myself: My favorite things are my spouse of many years, grandchildren, and loyal friends. I also like good books and quality chocolate, preferably together, with John Lee Hooker or

Johann Sebastian Bach playing in the background.

My memory has its drawbacks ... and I'll only pop in occasionally..

My youngest had her 'last recital' over the weekend .. has been playing the violin for many years...

Anyway ... I thought of you...when I noted 'Bach'

OK -- I'm out -- promise

A look at my favorite style of chart shows that we haven't been hit seriously enough that I want to bail yet. As you may remember, the charts contain the exponential moving averages for the F, C, S and I Funds. They are represented in 4, 7, 10, 13, 18, 24, 27, 33 and 39 EMAs in a ribbon format. And just for grins, here is how my IRA is doing:

I was feeling a little silly this morning for sticking with my plan (holding 100% equities until the 5 DMA crosses the 20 DMA) instead of listening to the Sentiment Survey. This afternoon, not so much. :D

To answer your previous question - Wonder Woman was great with graphics. Her name was ieleen and she was a registered nurse. She got into a flame war with a butt hole named DMA. A lot of the original members will remember her. Perhaps they'll offer to weigh in. Butt hole also did not like my bullish outlooks when I joined the board - so I had to slap him around a little. But Wonder Woman was a tremendous asset to the MB if you ask me - such a good personality.

...Wonder Woman was great with graphics...
Okay that proves I'm not WW. Graphics are my Achilles Heel. Seriously though, she sounds like she was a great addition to the MB. Maybe one day she'll wander back.

And Birch, thanks for the sticky pants. I made a few more bucks today.

In appreciation of the Veterans on the MB and to help us celebrate with them, I've been up since dawn making a buffet 'drop by any time' meal.

We're having prime rib, twice baked potatoes, summer squash with tomatoes and sweet onion, fresh bread with homemade peach jam, and blueberry pie and ice cream for dessert. BC, if you want to take some over to the clubhouse, I have Tupperware and warming bags you can borrow.

Everyone come by if you can and enjoy. ::: places hand over heart and makes sweeping motion outward ::: And my heartfelt thanks to our veterans!
