I dont car what the pundits may say

The boy / perp is out of his ever-loving mind.

The sheriff dumpnik knew about this kid long before he went postal.

I have noticed that I haven't noticed anything related to her strong support for Israel, her heritage. I suppose there are those who would not want to make such a connection even if it had been relative...

The AZ shooting is too much for our 'feeble minds' to comprehend. Part of 'us' wonders about the wonderful boy who suffered so greatly by living in a world that demanded 'reason' and 'order'.

Perhaps the shooting(s) would not have occured if only society could have more fostered his 'outbursts' and paid more attention to his thoughts and expressions in a loving - accepting - and understandable manner.

So maybe it's the pressures of society at large -- and all of us would do the exact same thing if it were not for some tiny filter in our brain holding us back - keeping us safe.

Perhaps it was the carpet in his living room and years from now we'll find its influence dominated his thoughts and actions.

When you consider the actual people that were killed - the most perplexing 'problem' lies with us -- because our feeble minds demand 'reason' - when there is no reason. We demand answers to circumstances and events that on the deepest level have no answer.

This 'could happen' to anyone of us. Some vein or attery in the brain could burst any moment; or we have some bizarre reaction to some substance and do some weird s**t - then everyone around the globe will wonder about us.

This is one time I really wish we had an ultra conservative republician president - cause then there could be no answer. So perhaps this one time we should be grateful for what we have.

Agreed, life is more peaceful here since we ceased with the politically motivated threads. I'm less of an A-hole and that just makes the world a better place overall...

There were 48 serious threats against Democrat politicians last year compared to only 15 the previous year.

ahemm..... the USPS worker comparison to paranoid schizophrenia could have been left out, my man....
There have been 3 mailings of incendiary devices in as many weeks, with no shortage of risk as of late.
PDX has had 4 officer-related shootings in two weeks, boiled down to this:

Spate Of Shootings Forces Portland Police To Review Procedures
"Dan Handleman: "Sometimes when there's one officer involved shooting, generally around Oregon, then there'll be a small cluster of shootings around that.
My sense is that perhaps officers are more on edge because one officer fired their weapon and then other officers are a little bit more on edge when they go out.
But to have this many shootings just in Portland in such a short time is very unusual."

He'd like sergeants to talk more to officers during roll-call when there is an officer-involved shooting.

Chief Reese says that already happens. He says the reality is that Portland's crime rate is at historic lows. But it's extremely difficult to deal with someone who is both mentally ill and wielding a weapon.

Mike Reese: "The unfortunate reality is that when you have 440,000 citizen contacts a year as we do, and more and more of those involve people in mental health crisis, you're going to have tragic outcomes."

Reese discussed police action with Portland Mayor Sam Adams. He said they'll do everything they can to try and limit police use of deadly force.
But he said, the cuts expected in mental health and other services in the coming months, are not going to help."

Sam Adams: "You know, potentially two of these folks needed the kind of public services that would have potentially prevented them from getting in these situations in the first place."

WaPo’s Irresponsible Article Blaming Acquaintances for Not Committing Jared Loughner
According to the Washington Post, Arizona has a law on the books that enables anyone to identify a potential victim of mental illness, and remand them for treatment:

Under Arizona law, any one of Jared Lee Loughner’s classmates or teachers at Pima Community College so concerned about his increasingly bizarre behavior could have contacted local officials and asked that he be evaluated for mental illness and potentially committed for psychiatric treatment.

That, according to local mental health and law enforcement officials, never happened.

“To the best of our knowledge, he was never and is currently not enrolled in our system,” said Neal Cash, president of the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, which provides mental health services in Tucson and Pima County for the state. While most of those it serves are on Medicaid, Cash said anyone diagnosed with a serious mental illness would be in its system.

This is all well and good, but WaPo is leaving a lot out, and indirectly blaming Loughner’s teachers and classmates for not taking advantage of the law. First of all, Arizonans generally don’t appear to be aware of this law. Second, it requires them to petition a court – a laborious procedure that a mere acquaintance may not be willing or even equipped to undertake. Third, Arizona’s lax gun laws failed to catch what Pima Community College did do to Loughner – suspend him from school and disallowing him to return without a mental health clearance. Even if this didn’t trigger anything in the gun background check, you’d think this would have raised the awareness of the people most inclined to get counseling for Loughner, his parents.

But the most glaring oversight here, what WaPo waits until paragraph 21 to tell you, in a story told almost entirely from the perspective of mental health professionals in Arizona, is that the state is one of the worst in the nation at delivering mental health services, and cut back significantly on its mental health programs during the Great Recession in order to balance their budget. That’s not paragraph 21 information; it undermines the entire premise of the article.

I wouldn't take it personal Cr...Fab was using the typical expression for someone going/gone crazy..we all know where it comes from, let's not pretend we don't understand it....just like we all know that the USPS workers are wonderful, dedicated public servants of whom we all love and respect..I gave my letter-carrier a $50.00 GC to Lowe's this year..

We all use words that graphically describes something or someone, but without malice or personal intent of harm or disrespect of others...like when we refer to something or someone as a "retard" or "retarded"..Just an expression..Parents of children with Downs..don't like the expression and take issue just as you did with "Going Postal"..

So in that context..I will forever refrain from using that expression again..I understand the underlying implications of it as an insult to all that work for the USPS.:o

It’s so easy to play “Monday morning Quarterback”, but It would seem the local PD would’ve had some kind of presence at that event. The local PD was aware of past threats to this member of Congress. In addition, her local Tucson office was vandalized and threats made. And to top it off someone dropped a firearm at another one of her Tucson public events. The threats were real / well documented and you would think that someone would raise a red flag.

On a lighter note, has anyone seen the picture of the shooter?? My first thought was dang, this looks like “Uncle Fester” from that old 1960’s TV show, “The Addams Family”... You know, that dude that could light up a bulb in his mouth... Anyway, unless he gets off on a nut plea bargain, I predict he will get a needle in his arm at USP Terre Haute within 2 years...:cool:

Fab1, no offense taken, really, it's just that a mention of that around work, even in jest, can set a complicated personnel situation in motion, and even when overheard on the street, I try to redirect the topic because of the stigma it brings up.
Thanks, Buster- Your letter carrier's fortunate to have you on the route!
With all the impersonal rhetoric these days, gestures of appreciation like that go a long way.

Reminds me of a certain world leader referring to the Special Olympics... ;)

This member - rocked the boat my friend and made some waves.

In addition, her local Tucson office was vandalized and threats made.

Did they not cut across the grain -- challenge The System -- try to take matters in their own hands ?

And to top it off someone dropped a firearm at another one of her Tucson public events. The threats were real / well documented and you would think that someone would raise a red flag.

Threats are going to happen to 'anyone' who has the balls to take a stand - especially one that cuts across the grain - that swims upstream when everyone else is swimming downstream.

These are excellent points you're making - but even if police has been onhand it is unlikely they would be searching everyone at an open 'public area' -- especially the bookbag of a 22 year old boy.

However, and more importantly, the 6 that were killed are every bit as sacred (and important) as the Congress Woman; and had the PD been there -- those 6 may be alive today.

The killer would probably be dead - had they been there as well and to a large degree the story would end.

unless he gets off on a nut plea bargain

He will get off and you and all the others earning a living will pay for his food, shelter, recreation and whatever. ;)

It's pretty weird when something like this happens -- we're all cut from the same fabric.:nuts:

BTW -- my comments are not meant to anger or annoy

I mean everything in the deepest respect.

The term INSANITY lives in two worlds..

#1. as the medical profession sees it and defines it.

#2. as the legal world sees it and defines it.

The #1 version is not used in the courts as a defense.

The #2 version is hard to prove and very few cases tried are ever acquitted because of insanity...The case of topic right now will come to trial and the defendant will be found GUILTY of 1st degree murder..PERIOD

Why?..Because he premeditated it, and knew that what he was going to do was wrong based on notes and evidence he left behind...So he knows right from wrong and that will be what hangs him.
