Shutdown is here.

Update- it now looks like they are going to pull the DHS bill out, and vote on a Senate bill of everything EXCEPT the DHS bill, and try and pass that on Friday. And then that will have to go back to the House (assuming it passes), meaning we will get at least a shutdown of the DHS until they figure out what to do next.

What a country!

GOP senators open to splitting off DHS funding to pass other key spending bills

A group of Republican senators is open to splitting the Homeland Security appropriations measure off from a six-bill government funding package that needs to pass by Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown that would affect the Pentagon and other major departments.

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said “a bunch” of Republican senators would be willing to set aside the Homeland Security appropriations bill in hopes of saving five other appropriations bills covering the departments of Defense, Health and Human Services, Labor, Education, Transportation, State and financial services-related agencies.

“Sen. Thune can’t admit it because he’s got to act like a tough guy and the White House is negotiating and all of that, but most of you have been around here for a while and most of us have seen this vampire movie before,” Kennedy told reporters Wednesday.

“I think the Democrats don’t want to vote for a Homeland Security bill,” he added. “If that’s the case, then what are our choices? To throw out all the bills? Or one?” “I think a rational person would say let’s pass what we can and work on the others,” Kennedy said.

Wow! Kennedy actually speaking some common sense.

This bill also allocates money for Body Cameras, directs De-escalation training, training on the public’s right to record interactions with federal agents, and directs DHS to standardize uniforms for domestic law-enforcement personnel except when undercover.

So in theory taking the bill out will fix what?

I'm not paying any attention, but based on what I am reading here the DHS appropriation will not pass.

No Democrats will vote for it regardless of what is in it, and some Republicans will not either. It may have all the wonderful annual training you are mentioning, but it won't pass. Now, I'm off to my annual sexual harassment class, or is it my annual don't get bribed by some $25 lunch, or whatever...

My fave was the new OPM administrations mandatory OPM management training that has us using mandatory quotas. Best part - giving the employees an "atta boy" is as good or at times better than a monetary reward.

Doesn't matter if three employees do excellent work enacting the executive orders (which is primarily how we're now graded), only one can receive anything higher than Successful.

White House initiated shut down as of midnight- hoping for a solution on Monday. Senate voted on part of funding- but now the House has to do it again- and that can’t be until at least Monday afternoon.

It’s shutdown now.

Most of the U.S. government is shut down but is expected to reopen early next week

WASHINGTON — Most of the U.S. government shut down as the clock ticked over to Saturday, Jan. 31, but the funding lapse is expected to be brief.

The Senate passed legislation Friday evening that would fund the government, but the House is not in Washington, leading to the partial government shutdown this weekend.

-snip-

The funding lapse is not expected to have a significant practical impact, given that most federal employees don’t work during the weekend and Trump has vowed to quickly sign the package into law. But any unforeseen delay in the House could drag out the partial shutdown deeper into next week.

Among the agencies that will be temporarily shut down: the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration enforcement and has faced heavy criticism after two high-profile killings of American citizens in Minneapolis by immigration agents.

Why is it that every time there is some deadline or something extremely important happening in Washington Mike Johnson sends all the Congressmen home.

Well, the Speaker may be confident- but the votes weren’t there. The House just voted the Senate amendments down.

Now what?

The real shutdown will happen when folks/countries stop buying our bonds and treasuries. Soon, rather soon...

This is all theater by failed lawyers who think they control the game.

There ya go- after the time expired, somebody somewhere strong armed- and it ends up flipping votes and passing.

Now in to the actual bills themselves-

This is being voted on now- all then there stuff besides DHS:

Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026

This bill provides FY2026 appropriations to several federal departments and agencies. It also extends various expiring programs and authorities.

Specifically, the bill includes 3 of the 12 regular FY2026 appropriations bills:

  • the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2026;
  • the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations
    Act, 2026; and
  • the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.
The departments and agencies funded in the bill include

  • the Department of Defense,
  • the Department of Labor,
  • the Department of Health and Human Services,
  • the Department of Education,
  • the Department of Transportation,
  • the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and
  • related agencies.
The bill also extends several expiring programs and authorities, including

  • the U.S. Grain Standards Act;
  • the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s whistleblower program;
  • the National Flood Insurance Program;
  • the Forest Service's participation in the Agriculture Conservation Experienced Services Program;
  • the Transportation Security Administration’s Reimbursable Screening Services Program;
  • the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee;
  • several authorities and programs related to cybersecurity;
  • the technology modernization fund and board;
  • the U.S. Parole Commission;
  • the special assessment on nonindigent persons or entities convicted of certain offenses involving sexual abuse or human trafficking;
  • several immigration-related programs and authorities;
  • the authority for the U.S. Sentencing Commission to promulgate certain guidelines or amendments related to the use of unmanned aircraft;
  • certain bankruptcy fees;
  • trade preferences for Haiti and countries in sub-Saharan Africa;
  • the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program; and
  • several health care authorities and programs.

And there you have it- the House passed the budget 217-214. Done deal. I think now it goes to get signed by the President.
