Shutdown is here.

@waltj,

If you are recalled to work you are working and you should be paid. Kinda simple.
You missed the point. Everybody is taking excessive time off and not attending to the work they were elected to do. Congress out till...? The Senate, another long weekend.

There is truth to that, but whatever...

Everybody wants Congress to work deals to cross party lines. With a debt load of $38 Trillion and annual deficits in excess of $1.7 Trillion the game has finally become dog-eat-dog, a true zero-sum-game. There can no longer be: I'll trade funding for my 'Bridge to Nowhere' for your funding of a 'Woodstock Museum'. There ain't no money, honey.

This is the way of the future and it will get harder.

Math has no bias.

Well said. We're in uncharted budgetary territory to say the least. The next economic crisis won't be the same as previous ones, but it will rhyme and be painful for a lot of folks.

Why don't they just take back the tax breaks given to the millionaires and billionaires. That should help. Of course that means less in donations for the ballroom.
Bottom line is unless they sit down and talk nothing will get done except hurting the American people.

It's a filibuster. The House bill would pass if/when the filibuster clears.

And, it is a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

Inflation adjusted:
Fiscal YearRevenueExpense
20194,247 Billion5,455 Billion
20244,918 Billion6,751 Billion
% Increase+15.8%+23.7%

This is not an issue with millionaires and billionaires. Inflation adjusted revenue has increased dramatically, but we decided to spend lots more than that huge increase!!! Did you get any real value from that amazing spending growth?

There is no money floating around for CongressCritters to bargain with. They've spent the design margin. Winter is coming.

Obama tax code (pre-Trump)...

Inflation adjusted:
Fiscal YearRevenueExpense
20164,268 Billion5,037 Billion
20244,918 Billion6,751 Billion
% Increase+15.2%+34.0%

So here is what your Congress did today.,

1. The Senate is off until next week. No activity of any kind today. See you Monday.

2. The House, after being out of session for three weeks, gaveled the House to order at 2:00 pm.

3. They did the Pledge of Alligence, opening prayer, and then announced that the House will be in “District Period”, meaning Congressmen back in their home districts, from Monday , until November 4 now.

4. They then adjourned at 2:03. Next pro-forma session will be Tuesday, October 28 at 1pm, and the District work period shall go from Monday, Oct 27, until Sunday, November 2.

They worked all of 3 minutes today.

And no closer to talking, so no closer to an agreement.

Ground-hog day again.

AFGE: "It's Past Time to End This Shutdown", Everett Kelley, AFGE National President.

In summary:
Reopen the government immediately under a clean continuing resolution that allows continued debate on larger issues.

Ensure back pay for every single employee who has served or been forced to stay home through no fault of their own.

Work together on a bipartisan basis to address important policy matters like addressing rising costs and fixing the broken appropriations process.

Another week goes by, another do-nothing Congress day.

A group of Dems tried to propose a way to vote on the CR with a guarantee that they would also be allowed to vote on Health Care subsidies. The proposal fell apart after The President said he wouldn’t support any other votes, and then announced he is refusing to obey the federal judge’s order on SNAP, and demanded the Senate use the nuclear option.

We are now at day 37 of the shutdown, and Congress , controlled by the GOP in the House, the Senate, and the White House, simply cannot govern. They can’t cut a deal.

Voting shortly in the Senate on the 15th time to try and pass the CR that expires on Nov 21. Everybody agrees, even the GOP, that November 21 is too soon now. But there is no consensus on when it should be.

Oh, and the House is adjourned now unto Monday at the earliest.

Senate now voting on alternate bill to pay those still working only. That looks like it’s going down again too. On motion to cloture, the bill fails 53-43.

In short- back to zero. But at least some of them were talking today. That’s movement.

Well, another day, another bust.

Around noon today Sen Thune said he was going to keep the Senate in session continuously until a deal was ready.

That fell apart shortly after. No deal.

At 6:49 pm, the Senate adjourned for the night. They will be back again tomorrow at noon. Senate will resume session at noon Sunday.

Some wild finger pointing still going on, but
At least they are talking now. That is a good sign. Oh, and the Supreme Court stopped SNAP cards. Once the food runs out, it’s hunger games.

Good luck.

P.S.- I think I hear the violins playing as the boat is going down.

Quote from Republican Senator John Kennedy-

“Ahead of a 15th attempt to reopen the government, Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., told reporters that he doesn’t expect a resolution to the 38-day government shutdown to come any time soon, casting gloom on optimistic forecasts of a resolution this week.

"I think we're at least seven days and more likely 10 and very possibly two weeks away from opening up at the best," Kennedy said.

(Yikes- Kennedy is saying maybe two weeks. ) link: https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/sen-kennedy-says-shutdown-could-175354351.html

Senators reach tentative deal to end the government shutdown

The deal, negotiated by a group of Democrats and GOP leaders, funds the government through Jan. 30. If it passes, it will still need to clear the House, which will likely take days.

Another vote is underway in the Senate right now- 8:38 pm Sunday est. I’ll post when they pass something. Dohh my t know if this is going to make it.

What happened? It was sitting at 59-40 for an hour. Then it simply disappeared on Cspan! While the score was one vote short-

Did the 60th vote ever show up?

Yup. They got 60 votes.
That will limit debate and they can vote tomorrow on a companion package of bills as well. Meaning the whole thing will have to get a final Senate vote to pass, and then it has to go back to the House.

House meets tomorrow. (Monday) and so does the Senate for more votes.

Maybe some folks can tell me why a CR was filibustered, but I just can't see it...

For those of you who think that the rich should pay their fair share, you are about to see the fair share. I missed 2-1/4 paychecks. If I get it all lumped into my next paycheck (Thursday) the income tax will be computed as if I made x3-1/4 what I actually make. Our hope is someone who is financially sentient - like Bessent - will realize this and maybe give us separate paychecks with normal withholdings. Likely, the gubmint fat will flop around too slow to make that happen and I will get my 1%er paycheck.

In the end, since I am financially literate, I can zero things out over time.

I think the only good thing to come out of this 'Fandango Group' experience is that I actually know what my expenses are for a month. That is a great help for planning.
