kind of scary volitility in Japanese markets - today's WSJ had story on the new class of day-traders in japan. WSJ suggested they're doing something on the order of 30% of total trades on Japanese markets, and 1/2 of those trades are on margin. Sound familiar to anyone? Oh well, it worked in the U.S. markets for a couple of years in the late 90s... but the story didn't end so well.

I'll take $5M please

What is the effective margin rate - 0.5%? And it may go to 1.0% in another 12 months and then 1.5% in another 12 months. I hope it's tax deductable. What a wonderful way to fill ones' pockets.

It's not usually the rate charged for margin that causes the problems, it's when the lenders (brokers) say your collateral (stock) is no good that hurts.... And, you get enough of the market standing on collateral that others have bought on margin, the current "price" of that collateral starts to have some vulnerable aspects.....

Are Japanese equities really worth 40% more than a year ago? Maybe. Or is it more likely a whole new set of investors have come literally online, and have been riding a partially self-proving margin financed rising tide - listening to brokers and analysts saying "this time it's different"....

TOKYO (AP) -- The Bank of Japan on Thursday abandoned the super-easy monetary policy it has kept for five years, saying it will gradually raise interest rates and start to cut the excess cash in the banking system amid signs of economic recovery. But the central bank sent a clear message that the transition will be slow, saying benchmark interest rates will remain near zero for some time and that it will only gradually reduce the amount of liquidity in the banking system over several months.

Japanese Stocks Boosted by BOJ Decision

TOKYO (AP) -- Japanese stocks jumped more than 2.6 percent Thursday as the Bank of Japan announced the end of its super-easy monetary policy, relieving the market of uncertainty. The Nikkei 225 index gained 409.42 points to close at 16,036.91 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Thursday.

Oil Prices Hold Steady at $60 a Barrel

Sounds like good news. Lets hope it rubs off on the S fund as well

I think a large percentage of us have put our $$$ on the sidelines in the G fund until further notice. Anyone talking about getting back in? Have we hit bottom yet? I think what we are looking at right now is a “dead cat bounce”, but I think I’m almost ready to get back in.

If the US markets keep going down and the Internationals keep going up, if could be "fair valuation" time.....................
