nasa1974's retirement story

Yes! Congratulations!

Thanks Tom. I had figured it would be 6 to 9 months before I saw my full retirement check between listening to folks and reading the different articles. But 4 months and 2 days from my retirement date is a good thing. I just hope some of other recent retirees get their full retirement check just as quick.

FANTASTIC, Nasa !!!! Guess you win our little retirement "race to the final numbers" ! I'm happy for you, and that you came in under the "average" time OPM is saying ! Now you can seriously start planning that cruise with your Kids !

Does this mean I can't post in your retirement thread anymore ?

Well, I guess now it's between me and Dutchy...and I still don't have a specialist assigned yet !

Nasa,

WOW !!! Too bad they don't move as quickly on the other steps in the process !

Thanks for sharing this additional info...Looking at your booklet's Table of Contents, I'm figuring...they probably have some sort of software to keep track of their calcs as they go along. Once they're done and it's signed off by whoever is their Boss, they can probably hit a key and produce the booklet, so it makes sense that the booklet could be generated quickly !

Now I'm curious to know : Do you see changes on your OPM web site screen ? Do they show you as no longer in "interim pay" status ? Just curious...

Honestly I do not remember seeing Interim anything on the OPM main page. It has changed in the "Annuity Statement" selection. The July, August and September payments show "Interim Payment". But when I click on it now it shows my October payment and deductions.

Just checked...the second line on the main screen, right below the cordial greeting, it says something like "interim pay menu". I was also under the impression that are more options you can review or change on-line, once you're in "final" status ?

Nasa,

Yup...a few more options...mostly with the allotments, and State tax deductions ! Fortunately, we're back in our "home state" of Florida, and have no State income tax, unlike Maryland...

Here's another question for you, and the rest of the Board, following our threads !

What part of your pension is NOT taxable by the Feds ? I found a calculator the other day on the OPM web site, but it asked how much you'd put into the pot...not sure I can come up with that number, unless the final paperwork gives it to me !!! Also not sure how this compares between my situation (FERS), vs yours, as CSRS... Perhaps the year-end pension tax statement gives you that number ???

Great news about the progression.

About the menu changes and documents no longer being found. Tedious though it is, save a screen shot of the menus and the documents. When the menu item disappears the screen shot will show you the URL. Save the docs as a doc.

Enjoy your retirement.

Jealously yours,

PO

In Friday's mail I got the tri-fold letter from OPM giving me notice that my annuity payment has been adjusted. They are now taking out my monthly dental insurance premiums along with Federal Tax, life insurance and health insurance. That's one less check I will have to write.

As I get close to the end of the year I have been retired almost 7 months. It will be interesting to see what information I get from OPM for filing 2012 taxes. Will I owe or will I get something back. I am hoping money back since I am claiming single no deductions. Then I will have to calculate my State taxes and figure out what to have deducted. Stoplight I am going to have to read your thread again because I plan to do a partial withdrawal from my TSP account the first of the year. I want to pay off some school loans. I guess I better read up on the forms. I'm hearing a Cost of Living of 1.7% for 2013. Something is better than nothing. Happy Holidays everyone.

Nasa,

My main advice ? Cross every "t" and dot every "i", including the section from your "custodian" if you're rolling into some other account !!!

Regardless of how you submit the forms (snail mail, fax), at least check the TSP web site EVERY DAY for the status ! If you fax it like I did, CALL THEM every day until you get a verbal confirmation that they have it "under review", and they have it straight on what you want them to do. As I noted in my thread, they don't tell you much, and if something is screwed up, you have a very short window to correct it !

Best Wishes to You and Yours for a healthy and prosperous 2013 !!!
