Market Talk / July 16 - 22

Market Update 3:30 pm: Indices continue to languish near their lows of the session as buying interest remains scarce across the board. Among the few areas garnering some attention going into the weekend are a number of Health Care-related industry groups (e.g. Biotech +1.8%, Distributors +1.5%) and Tobacco (+0.7%), as Altria Group (MO 79.69 +0.60) hits a new all-time high. However, interest in a number of defensive-oriented areas merely underscores the market's widespread nervousness.

Birchtree, you don't have to worry about that, you're one of the good ones. Hang in there with the "C" when the big switch comes I'll be right there with you, in the "C" up to my waist!! I think you're right, world pressures are setting it back, but it will come!!! Yes!:D OH, thanks, hope I can handle it?

What's Spooking the Market
For a while this week, it seemed as though the stock market was willing to discount the war in Lebanon based on good news from the Fed. Wednesday, the Dow rallied by 200 points. But that mood soon changed and the market has been heading lower ever since. Why? Because the war in Lebanon is about much more than Lebanon. The market realized that what's happening in Lebanon is just a part of the larger War on Terror. It's another demonstration of how difficult it is to cope with individuals who are willing to destroy everything around them in order to achieve their objectives. We saw it on 9/11. We see it in Lebanon. And we still see it in Iraq. Hezbollah, Hamas, Al Qaeda and all the other Islamic terrorists, funded and directed by Iran and abetted by Syria, are evil partners in an evil war plan. And if you're evil enough not to care at all about casualties on your side to win a war, you can create tremendous damage with unforeseeable consequences. That will destroy value in a market far more than another interest rate rise by the Fed. And that's what's beginning to really spook the market.

That was a fairly neutral question!

Spaf... that's something else. We get Ms. C. Rice saying something to the effect of calling for the bigger guy to step back and talk things over (on FOX News Live @1300 Friday; after the US has already "Fed Ex'ed" more serious fire power to Israel. This is going to get real ugly. Who's next up at the plate? Syria / Iran openly arming the Hezbollah?

So who is she refering to as `the bigger guy?" Seems to me that would be the Muslim nations...Israel's land & population are next to nothing compared to the Muslim/Arab nations it is corned by on three sides.

We gave Saddam a six month warning period - time for him to get any WMDs well hidden in the caves ( it took over 2000 years for the Dead Sea Scrolls to show up.) So how long of a warning are these guys going to get now, so they can get well prepared & dispersed???

Question 1. Who knows? The bigger guy could be the more rational of the two, or the one with the most firepower, or the one with the larger mass of humanity.
Question 2. IMHO... I'm just about ready to cheer that whole thankless bunch of religious haters (who refuse to play well with others) on into lighting themselves up, and getting it over with; ONCE AND FOR ALL. Lets all of us (US, Syria, Russia, China, Iran, and the entire Euro-nation) give them a big pile of whatever the hell they need... and call DW to say 'Boogity Boogity Boogity! Let's go racin' boys!

Those people who are convinced that Armageddon is around the corner will just keep saying that Armageddon is around the corner. Only time now can reconcile the bears and the bulls. The markets will continue to have gyrations. Certainly not a reason to not play.

Iran will be watching to see how their bunker construction holds up to 5000 pound bunker buster guided bombs.

I'm watching the Dow Utility index - getting close to 437. There hasn't been a bull market top with the utilities making new highs. And besides aren't we practicing nation building in our exports to China? Who will rebuild Lebanon?

Will be closing this weekly thread, and starting a new one. Thanks for all the interesting yak!..................
