Market Talk / April 15th - April 21st

Hi Birch,

I think the Monday sprint of +15.62 [SPX] was too much. +7.00 would have been better. The odds are against momentum until we pause or pull back.

[BRIEFING.COM] S&P futures vs fair value: -5.7. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: -9.0. Pre-market sentiment continues to deteriorate as the futures market slips deeper below fair value. On a positive note, JP Morgan Chase (JPM) handily topped Wall Street expectations and authorized a new $10 bln stock buyback program while fellow Dow component United Technologies (UTX) beat consensus estimates and reaffirmed its full-year earnings outlook. Be that as it may, the disappointments from so many tech bellwethers have left investors questioning the influential sector's growth prospects and the sustainability of recent market gains. It is also worth noting that the absence of any notable economic data this morning is placing even more emphasis on earnings and guidance.

I'm thinking possible triple banger - but we need 24 more points on the DJTA. That would give us another confirmation on the Dow Theory - someone sing a song.

We got rid of the esoteric rainmakers, and are now bidding for the sunshine boys to lift the markets. Hope it works!:) :D

SAN FRANCISCO, April 18 (Reuters) - Online auction leader eBay Inc. (EBAY.O: Quote, Profile , Research) reported on Wednesday quarterly results that beat Wall Street expectations and said its outlook for the rest of the year would be at the high end of analysts' predictions. EBay posted a 52 percent jump in net profit on a 27 percent revenue rise, led by growth in its core auctions business and the rising prominence of international sales.

I think I read somewhere that when the dollar is weak it tends to favor the C-fund (big caps). Or is it the other way around?

I suppose that the C fund will be the 1st beneficiary, but if there is sufficient money on the sidelines, a spill over effect occurs into medium and small caps.

Many Savers, Few Spenders Leave South China Mall Almost Empty

By Matthew Benjamin and Nipa Piboontanasawat
April 17 (Bloomberg)

...Chinese reluctance to spend and eagerness to save is the mirror image of attitudes in the U.S. While China's savings rate is the highest of all major economies, the U.S. rate is negative. Until spending and savings patterns in China and the U.S. change, trade imbalances will grow worse, officials say...
