Mapper's Account Talk

I like your TZA / TNA plays! :) I made 10% off TZA just over these last 2 days. I needed it after my TSP got whacked! I missed out on more profits, I exited at $45, didn't want to get greedy, then woke up checked the news, then confirmed with volume and went all in 60% TZA, 40% FAZ about. I made it in with 15 minutes remaining in after markets hours. If it goes against me I'll probably sell pre-market on Tuesday.

In the last 15 mins of trading today:
(The below numbers are the net positive volume buying amount after subtracting the selling):

FAS = +2.4 million shares
FAZ = +2.2 million shares

TNA = +500k shares
TZA = +1.4 million shares

Yep, I'll be holding that TZA for a little longer now!! Wish I had bought a little more like you but I wanted to stay relatively neutral over the weekend. Recently had a very large unexpected household expenditure so I'm currently in a little more conservative on the risk spectrum than I like to be.

Presuming we keep moving lower I'm looking for another opportunity to pick up cheaper TNA shares. My personal perspective is that the market still has plenty of upside potential as we near the end of the year.

Wish I hadn't sold my TZA late on Friday... maybe I can pick some up on a bounce today :D

Remember "bounces" can be relative.

Global market scene isn't looking pretty.

Obviously not suggesting you jump in unnecessarily but I bet a guy could make a buck or two today! Be careful for whatever spike happens right at the open though.

We could be looking at another 200 point Dow tail - the bottom may be in again and now we rally to 11,700.

Wound up selling my recent TZA acquisition at 49.94 for a ~16% gain. Unfortunately it isn't the end of the story as I still have shares of TZA I purchased long ago that are underwater. Wanted to lock in a small gain on the one position but was hoping for a little more negative action before liquidating ALL of my TZA.

Currently pondering whether we just put in a higher low or this is a head fake. It would be nice to acquire TNA at this price IF we keep going up but I'm worried about the Euro court decision on the Greek bailout as Tom discussed in the last couple of commentaries. My gut says there is no way in hell the court will determine the bailout was illegal. I'm thinking we move up to right to that decision....then either pause and drop OR keep moving higher. Either way I think a few $$ could be made in the intervening hours....but I'm not yet sure I'm willing to place a wager on that!!

Thanks for the visit BT. I didn't see that post until now but I also think we saw a short-term bottom today. On the run up to the close I put my money down and grabbed another little stash of TNA @ $39.86. Would have liked to get a better price but I needed to see upward movement for confirmation...clearly I got that confirmation.

So my schizophrenic positioning continues. I'm ready to sell a position with either upside or downside action but in the short term I'm anticipating a move up with upside resistance in that sticky S&P 1220-1230 zone.

Ugghh, I knew I should have closed my TNA position earlier today before Bernanke/Obama speech market volatility started. Can't take the volatility any more...wound up selling TNA @ 42.46. Locked a 6.5% gain, which I should be plenty happy about, but I had almost a 15% gain going earlier in the day and was very tempted to sell at that point. I was proud of myself for sitting on my hands during the early morning drop but should have been happy enough when I was sitting on a positive 10+%. Probably going to let things settle down a bit before making any additional moves.

TSP
Still sitting 25F 75G with all contributions going to equities.

If equities are going down, please explain why one would put new contributions into them? Don't they immediately lose value? Or, are you buying stocks when they are cheap? Thanks.

Could be some kind of Dollar Cost AVERAGING, I always put contributions into the "G", just a coward I guess?

The lower a dividend paying stock goes the higher the yield return. Where else can money find yield in this yield shortage environment - that's why I'm buying stocks on any given day. Companies are increasing their dividends at the fastest pace in seven years. If the Fed could make a return if they were to buy equity asset indexes. It's a simple plan that would help companies and provide support to the stock market. So watch for this surprise.

I'm hopefully buying stocks when they are cheap. That's about it. I don't know where the market is going but I'll take the chance that it is going up, keeps me optimistic. I know this is counter my current allocation...but hey, call it a mini-hedge. Mostly, keeping my contributions static into equities is just one less thing for me to worry about. I currently make IFTs frequently enough that it all gets moved sooner rather than later. Sometimes it is smart, sometimes not. In the grand scheme I figure it's a wash.

For what it is worth. I wish I had held my TNA position. I've got a feeling we're going to see some pop tomorrow.

Certainly didn't anticipate the Jurgen Stark move. Guess I got lucky this time.

Thinking heavily about grabbing some TNA on this drop but nervous about it being Friday. I will likely wait to see what Monday brings. Thinking of a the chorus to a certain Jimmy Buffet song, "Come Monday it'll be alright" the rest doesn't apply.

Was away from a computer this morning so I missed an opportunity, that I otherwise would have taken, to IFT into equities.

Took bite of TNA this morning @ $41.21.
My last few moves have been small positions and I took a slightly larger position this time...meaning this is likely to be the end of my little winning streak ;)

ETF Good News
Sold off the TNA @ 44.85 for 8.8% on the trade.
Could have got a few more $$$ if I acted a little earlier. Oh well, tomorrow may be another up day but I'm not going to argue with nearly 9% profit in under 2 days and it was looking like the "breadth thrust" was losing momentum. Will wait to see how the morning settles out tomorrow before I decide if I want to go back in long or short.

ETF Bad News
I am STILL holding 2 really old (late July/early August trading chaos) positions: one TNA, one TZA. If we get a big move in either direction I can make an exit and cut some loses. Yep, I bought each when they were WAY too high and haven't felt comfortable exiting during this current trading channel. I'm expecting we make at least one more move down which will afford me a better exit from TZA and a nice low entry into TNA to further lower that cost basis. In the meantime I'm going to keep trying to chip away at the overall cost basis of those positions.

While trading these ETFs I've learned it is much easier/less nerve wracking to play the bullish side. I can make reasonably timed moves by getting directional confirmation. The bearish moves too fast; by the time you get a confirmed move down it seems to be time to head back up. Anyway, always learning and adapting.

TSP No News
Still holding 75G 25F. Looking for that move down before making my entry.

ETF
Following through on my bearish move yesterday afternoon by buying some TZA this AM. Grabbed @ $42.64

TSP
Still looking forward to an entry point!

If you're bearish ETF, why aren't you in F (sorry if you are, I didn't look it up)?

Sorry I missed your post RMI. I'm short term bearish, intermediate term bullish and long term ????(not sure yet but leaning bullinsh) and my current TSP is 25F 75G...hence looking for an entry. I'm also holding my (short term) TZA position, which has been essentially flat since the entry.

I also have long term TNA and TZA positions. I bad situation because they consistently cancel each other out, I set up this ill-conceived plan contrived in a time of panic in late July early August when I wasn't taking enough time to think things through. I'm hoping that we get enough further volatility that I can make good exits on both of these but I KNOW FOR SURE that I'll never take a ridiculous schizophrenic position like that again.

Logged in here to make a note:

I see an awful lot of people getting their bull suits out....are we lining up for a stampede or a bear attack? I'm still nervous about a small bear attack but keeping my bull suit close by because I expect we'll keep seesawing our way up.
