Did you know they use propylene glycol in the liquid? PG is an ingredient in anti freeze. Not sure how healthy that is.
Propylene glycol is considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and it is used as an humectant (E1520), solvent, and preservative in food and for tobacco products
As someone who dabbled with a little bit of woodshop longtime ago, glad I understand the language. The visuals are excellent. Very nice, Kave.
Where there's a will there's a way, good work.nnuut, Thank you! No forstner bit used I don't have a drill press. I only used plunge router and cleaned out the center of each 1-1/2" & 1-1/4" recess with a 1/4" straight cut router bit.
Hey Burrocrat,
I've been able to spend a couple nights this week in the Cave (my shop). Tomorrow is my nonworkday. If all goes as planned I will be close to completion on your project. I'll post pictures here probably late tomorrow. Stay tuned my brother!!!
Obviously I'm talking about water by itself. The comment I replied to inferred that PG might be bad because it was used in anti-freeze. I implied that water is not bad simply because it is used in anti-freeze. Any normal person can infer that water mixed with anything toxic is badI play around with wood now and then...But for a quick put together, that is some fine work..
RE: JPC's little commentary about Antifreeze and water...Bad analogy my dear..Water is fine by itself, but when you mix it with ethylene glycol, it is POISON. So yes it is bad in that state..very bad..Like table salt is safe as sodium chloride..But sodium and chloride by themselves are super toxic...Propylene Glycol is not ethylene glycol(antifreeze)..Glycol is the suspension agent and is virtually harmless..So puff away.
what is the border/slats of wood thing around the bottom for?
you haven't sold it yet have you?
I cut a 1/4" deep x 1/4" wide recess in the bottom of the box sides. In the wood working world it's called a "rabbit" . This rabbit receives the bottom, which is a 1/4" piece of plywood w/o the edge of the bottom being seen. This is a detail that gives any piece a more finished "furniture" look. I didn't do a rabbit in the prototype. If you go back and look at the prototype picture, you'll see the edge of the bottom piece of 1/4" plywood as it's exposed.
And no, I haven't sold it yet. I told you "it's yours"
that is some fine work. no exposed edges on the bottom and the corners of the box are mitered too. slick. the layout of the top work surface is accurately cut and perfect for my needs. that is a lot of cutting and routing with no apparent mistakes.
how did you manage to make those cuts through nail holes and knots, that could not have been easy? i like the big knot on the right side, it's my favorite part of the whole piece. how do you make the cuts so that the drawer face is from the same board as the front and the grain matches?
i hope you built jigs and templates because there might be quite the demand for things like this in the future. that is a man's piece of furniture. extreme level of craft and care went into it obviously. very nice, thanks.
ps. get your birthday and xmas orders in early, kave might end up being pretty busy.
