JTH's Account Talk

Am I the only one who wonders if the market is going to bail at the end of the day?

Is there too much uncertianty going into this weekend with IKE, and next weeks earnings reports?

Still I'm staying put with my 25% S-fund.

Fear is a Emotion. An Example of Fearless; Oil went "down" as Gustav
approached the Gulf Coast. Right into the Platforms and Refinaries. I'm
sure someone out there "shorted" oil as it approached. But not many ! ;)

Still 25% S-fund & as of 17 September down .94%

Now that I've opened up a Roth IRA to trade with, I'll be taking a less a active role in my TSP account. With my new account, I'll be going long with a buy and hold approach with some stops in place to avoid the big pitfalls.

Within TSP, it's just too hard to beat the market. I'm not saying it can't be done, but with 2 IFTs and having to settle on the end of day price, I've had better luck at the Craps tables in Vegas... At this point I won't be able to recover this year's loses. :(

For those of you beating the markets, you should be proud of what you've done under these circumstances. And I want to thank each and every one of you. I've learned so much from everyone here and I'm taking what I've learned and applying it to the market outside of TSP.

Cheers... JTH

What brokerage firm did you go with for your Roth IRA and what factors influenced that decision. Any advice would be helpful as I research my own move in that direction.--Ron

I actually opened up a ROTH IRA through my USAA account. The trades aren't cheap (13.95) but I didn't need to have thousands of dollars to open the account.

The reason I opened the account is that I wanted more flexability and choices. I also wanted to actively manage my account in "real time" instead of the 2 IFT limit and dealing with the end of day prices.

ShowMe has an account I've been watching for months, he helped give me the motivation I needed.

JTH, I would have paid $139.50 to get trades this last month and been happy. I have accounts with USAA but have not opened up a ROTH. Will consider so immediately.

Thanks for the info! Active control in real time w/o having to dump large amts to start is just what I'm looking for.

Your welcome Ron. I've bought and sold AIG twice, just to kick the tires. It seems to work fine, but please keep in mind I have nothing (experience wise) to compare it to. But since I already do all my banking with USAA, it's easy to transfer money and the account took 5 minutes to set up and a day for the transfer of money to go through.

Still sitting 25% S-fund and now at 1.62% for the month. I grow tired of watching this market with it's drastic swings. Now all I need to do is make a graceful exit... ;)

Putting my -7.05% TYD returns in perspective...

Over the last 8 years my returns have an average of 12.02%

Point being every cloud has a silver lining... :D

The lifting of dark clouds could result in the mother of all short covering rallies. It seems that shortly greed will replace fear as the market's overriding theme for the rest of 2008 - get me in at any price. Brother watch the hedge funds trample each other trying to get back in this market all going through the same door at once. I'm reminded that all rallies are preceded by declines...the bigger the decline the bigger the rally. Smoke'em big time.

JTH, your -7% is destroying the returns of many a seasoned veteran on the leaderboard, so feel proud!

Thanks everyone for the pep talk. As many do, I expect Monday to be a down day, and may cancel my IFT back to G accordingly. Otherwise I hope we all have a great week and the markets take a breather...

Hey buddy can you spare a dime? So much for my graceful exit to G today. Such is life, and I still have so many positive things going for me like a cold beer and a warm wife...

MTD 34% ;)

34% wow, too much cold beer while typing!:D

Apparently the beer is increasing my returns...

MTD .34% :embarrest:

Pass me a pitcher JTH ! I don't drink, but if it means increasing
my returns like that, heck, I'll be a lush before you know it ! :toung:
