Intrepid_Timer's PUBLIC Account Talk

I think that is absolutely wonderful. But the "Cooler" is still looking for you. Stay on your toes because you could be mine by the end of October. Let's meet at tracker rank #25. That means you silde backwards as I continue to move forward.

Don't see it happening Birch, sorry........................;)

Intrepid and WindHunter,

I believe you guys probably have had a good 12 month span...

However, I know the 12 month Personal Rate of Return isn't calculating properly - at least in my case. It is off by a little over 5% for me by any means of calculating it. Maybe it is a problem with my data, maybe a bug, whatever...

My account was messed up (not the balances or the allocations - ahmen) this weekend. Maybe they are working on part of it for some of us lucky ones...

The IRR for a one year span is kinda easy to figure.

IRR% = (Current Balance - Contibutions)/(Last Year's Balance)

It would be interesting to see if other folks are getting a TSP calculation error.

By the way, I don't have anything really good to brag about. I should be at about 10.1%... TSP gives me a 4.96%. The other months seemed to have computed properly:confused:. Kinda blew in in the Spring:embarrest:

They may be taking your contributions into consideration.

They do. The PRR does take the contributions into account. That's why comparing PRR doesn't make sense unless we all contribute the same amount each month. I can be assured that that is never going to happen.

Don't know about WH, but I haven't contributed to my TSP in well over a year. I quit the government on 01\02\10 and stopped contributing in June of last year.................... ;)

You can add up last years monthly returns on the tracker if you like.........

Hmmm, didn't know the TSP site is calculating w/contributions, but when I add from my personal tracker, I get 18.30% opposed to the 17.02% the TSP website has, so I guess it's pretty close.

WindHunter,

I now think it isn't a 12 month IRR using today. I think it may be using 2009/09/01 through 2010/08/31. That gets it to about a point off - like yours.

I seem to have good Septembers:)

I can probably look at Tom's summary in the tracker as well...

I hate that it only updates once a month. I have repeatedly asked why this is the case. I have not gotten a response......I was off by 7% this month....waiting for October to see if it corrects.

Wow. That makes no sense at all. I will have to look into that because it seems unbelievably misleading.

I don't think it takes contributions into account. My yearly statements are pretty accurate. And yes, the returns are as of the end of August.

Yeah, that makes more sense, but computing with contributions does not.:suspicious:

One could make a weak case for including matching contributions for FERS folks but never employee contributions. CSRS employees and military don't have matching contributions. There is really no good way to compare the PIP % from one TSP'r to another. IMHO The TSP PIP % is really not usefull.

Well I don't know, I sure hope so. My system produces buy and sell signals on the the stock market as a whole. I've been using financial ETF's because they have outperformed (either up or down) other sectors this year. Been thinking about switching to TNA and TZA because they have outperformed for the past month, but it's only been a month. I'll wait. Next year I'll be solely using mutual funds that track small caps..........
