Feds owe Uncle Sam $3B in unpaid taxes

"At a time when the White House is projecting the largest deficit in the nation's history, Uncle Sam is trying to recover billions of dollars in unpaid taxes from its own employees.

"Federal workers owe more than $3 billion in income taxes they failed to pay in 2008. According to Internal Revenue Service documents, 276,300 federal employees and retirees owe $3,042,200,000."

Wow, that was a good read!

One year 30 years ago I worked for a company for 2 weeks in a temp job and they gave me my W-2 when the job ended in August. And I forgot to report that job the next January when I did my taxes. And I got sent to the woodshed. And I was on the audit list for a couple of years after that. And now I'm a chicken who pays every penny of taxes owed with proof for every dollar of deductions.

Amazing to me that there are feds out there who would chance doing otherwise.

Of course it was also news to me that IRS are the only feds who can be fired for not paying taxes. And that Uncle Sam can't garnish our paychecks without going through the whole process.

Interesting article!

I know first hand about the IRS's policy. They call you in on anything.

Hey, 3 trill would go a long ways towards restoring .gov solvency. of course, it could also be $3trill taken out of the private economy as well (is it even there? or has it already vanished through bankruptsy and foreclosures?). Might tank the economy even more either way. hmm, danged either way. We are so....

It's 3 billion. I think 3 trillion would get a little more attention. :)

It's 3 billion, not 3 trillon. Unfortunately, that won't even make a dent in our solvency. We're still covered in red ink even after all these folks pay.

What's interesting is that 1/3rd of it is owed by military retirees. Maybe it was those big bonuses they were paying-
Retired military personnel make up about 33 percent of the money owed with $1,343,538,055 in unpaid taxes for 2008.

What are they going to do- send them to Iraq? :D

Here is the list, by exeuctive department and agency. Remember, this data is from the LAST administration, not the current one. Percentage wise, it looks like the U.S.Office of Special Counsel, the National Capitol Planning Commission, and the Federal Elections Commission all among the worst, with over 8% of the staff delinquet on taxes! I wonder what the relationship is between percentage of staff that are political appointees, and delinquency rates....

probably about the same as this adminstration's appointees as Czars
the Presdent's designated governerers/governeresses of the citizenship of the US;
non-citizenships excluded, of course.:D

I can remember one time it was the IRS workers themselves who were the deliquentees...
I supposed it was because they had to spend so much time trying to figure out a half-way correct response to questions from the public.
:D
