Re: Birchtree's account talk
Lobo, I may just be missing seeing you, are you in the Tracker?
As a 3 yr retired single, I would be very interest in knowing the moves you're making !!!!
For awhile I was adding in what was being taken out in my monthly, but not on any consistent basis anymore. Reading the market posts & watching the videos has helped. What have you that you can share?

Grandma,
I am pretty much a 99.9% lurker. Have been reading on this MB for abut 5 1/2 years now. I've never done the tracker stuff. I really don't know much about the market, etc. at all. I sometimes think most of it is blind luck.....as I think it is with almost all of those of us at "my" level. I've made a slight effort to learn a lot about most of what's said/presented here, but, just when I think it's gonna work, it "fails" me! So, I wouldn't think of having someone follow my moves. They won't get you rich, maybe save you a little and gain a very little, but, that's all I want for me. I just want to at least keep what I started with at retirement in the TSP, while drawing out some to eat on.

I don't draw that much out. If I make about 4.5% a year, it is replaced. I may take out more, eventually, if I keep gaining above that.
Overall, I think I've found that you can get about any opinion, or advice, you want about the market....it's about 50/50 out there. So, what good it that? However, I'm not a buy and holder, and I do listen to some with interest and consider what they say. I read the following: Birch (for my Bull shot....I've learned to appreciate him greatly, when I can decipher TSP-related stuff from his posts), Uptrend (for my Downtrend shot....at least of late), Poolman (for his great supply of videos), Steadygain (mainly because he's fun and has a caring heart), Coolhand (because he's pretty level-headed, most of the time...heh heh) and maybe a couple others from time to time. I also like to watch Oscar at livewith oscar.com as often as he puts up a video. I think Oscar is right probably 75%+ of the time...it's just that he is a day trader, which doesn't help us a lot, but you learn some neat stuff from him anyway.
I've learned a little about chart analyses, although I mostly use charts that others have generated, and a few that I have bookmarked myself on Yahoo or BigCharts that stay updated by the site. I believe there is something to tech analyses, but I'm not yet very good at it. I look mainly at trends, patterns and the bollinger bands of the different funds, etc. Most of the time, you can see a similar pattern happening. Mainly, keep it simple....too much analyses just fogs up this old brain!
Besides looking at some of the vids posted by Poolman, and a few others, I also like to read some on this site:

One other thing I do, besides make the wrong moves once in a while (well, maybe more than that....ha), is to "try" to be "in" at the 1st of every month. That has cost me sometimes, but....it allows me to get "out" at some point, and back "in" again in the same month....and, if absolutely necessary, get "out" again, giving me 3 solid moves, possible, in that month. As mentioned, I'm not a believer in "buy and hold". I move according to trends, etc, and, since I believe, like our friend Birch, that we are currently in a major Bull market, I'm still trying to get out near a high (got out today) and buy dips, hopefully "near" a low. I don't mind missing up to 50% of the "rise" and I hope to miss at least 50% of the "downs". The biggest change that occured in my TSP came when I decided to not get GREEDY....really. Take a risk, and smile whatever happens....but, never get Greedy. That will save your TSP as much as anything. If you miss 50% of the upswing, so what, grab the last 30 to 50% and giggle all the way to the bank....with pennies of course...but, what more do we really need in life, what with all we already have?!?
I've made this much too long! Birch, I appologize for taking up so much space in your home. Thanks for all your input to us all, and thanks for the neverending enthusaim and positive attitude!!!
And good luck to ya, Grandma....I wish the best for ya!!
Lobo
