I don't think that is what the article says. I think it says, when you focus on the other person's happiness, you received happiness in return. If you've done everything for the other person and you have not received any happiness in return.......then maybe you're not the one for her. Bring happiness to someone else who can appreciated it.

I hear a lot of guys complain about how she doesn't do this or she doesn't do that or I give and give but she just takes and takes.
This is advice column is about you and for you, not her. Change starts with you. You have some influence in her behavior, but you can't make her be the best person that she can be. You can only support her and encourage her...but you can always be the best you. Hopefully, the best in you brings out the best in her.

I'm a firm believer in giving 100% and making relationships work. However, if you both have given it everything you've got and you're both still unhappy, the most loving and caring thing you can do is walk away and let them go on with their lives. Life is meant to be shared and enjoyed with others. There's no rhyme or reason for staying together 'til the bitter end.
