2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

Imagine if the U.S. closed schools nationwide.

Japan to close schools nationwide to control spread of virus

I believe schools in South Korea are closed as well.
High school in Washington (Bothell High) closed for at least today due to virus concerns

A couple things:

1. South Korea reported 505 new confirmed cases today, bring the number to 1769. That’s a huge growth so quickly- the result of more testing among that church group I think. That tells me it’s going to be very difficult for them to get it under control- Korea isn’t China- it’s a free democracy, so they won’t be able to quarantine big cities like China did. I am fearful Korea is going to have a massive, massive problem in a few days to a week. Very bad news for them.

2. Iran had more die overnight. Deaths there now at 22, with just 140 reported confirm Ill. Again, I’m sure that means it’s not being tested/diagnosed at the same rate as other countries, but with that number of dead, I expect the illness is actually above a thousand, like Korea is, and it’s going to be even worse for Iran.

Here are today’s numbers for Feb 27-

Federal employees from HHS say they didn’t have on any protective gear when they met with that first batch of evacuees- and have filed a whistleblower complaint:

U.S. workers without protective gear assisted coronavirus evacuees, HHS whistleblower says

Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services sent more than a dozen workers to receive the first Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, without proper training for infection control or appropriate protective gear, according to a whistleblower....

South Korea says flight attendant infected with virus worked Los Angeles route

https://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN20L03R?

The flight attendant worked on Korean Air's flight KE017 from Seoul's Incheon airport to Los Angeles on Feb. 19, and on the return flight KE012 on Feb. 20, Yonhap news agency and other media reported. A South Korean official familiar with the case verified those flight details, adding that between flights the woman had stayed in Los Angeles overnight.

"She took a flight after showing symptoms, and we are investigating people who had contact with the employee on the flight," the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said in a statement on Thursday.

The flight attendant, described as being in her 20s, later tested positive for the virus, and she is currently in hospital.

The crewmember had been on a Korean Air KE958 flight from Israel to Incheon on Feb. 15-16, the KCDC said. The passengers on that flight included a South Korean religious group that 31 coronavirus cases have been traced

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries Interesting website. Compare this to US Flu cases https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm.
Yes this is something new and the media is sensationalizing the Corona virus, focusing on number of cases of suspected patients and one person in critical condition in California but not much detail.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/ This is the only site I could find with any demographic details on deaths related to the Corona virus. If you catch the virus your likelihood of dying increases if you have a major pre-existing medical condition or the older you are--probably similar to the risk of dying from the flu.

Way too much fear mongering in the media and many politicians politicizing the issue. Very sad.

Don't Worry, Be Happy!

p.s. Wash your hands frequently and stay home if you are sick!

I'm sorry but everyone saying the flu is worse is quite ignorant. The season flu has been around for decades. This coronavirus started in Dec 2019. We have flu shots and known treatment for the flu. We don't have either of the two for COVID19. COVID19 is significantly more deadly than the seasonal flu by an order of magnitude. Its currently believed that COVID19 will not slow down from warmer summer weather. Its also believed the virus can live on surfaces for several days.

Whens the last time someone caught the flu and was evacuated from another country, or cruise ship, and quarantined onto a military base for several weeks? China canceled all funerals, regardless of death. Countries are cancelling school.

Is it the end of the world? No. Should people panic? No, but its certainly to be taken seriously. There are still a lot of unknowns. When will it stop spreading? What are the long term effects after 'recovery'? Are you immune after the first time?

We may not have a vaccine this year, and could take months to figure out what to use to fight it.

Right, I've been hearing the flu has a fatality rate in the 0.1% range, while COVID-19 is looking like it is somewhere in the 3-4% range AND more contagious/transmissible. So that's more than 30-40x deadlier.
