Q: Did Obama turn down foreign offers of assistance in cleaning up the Gulf oil spill? Did he refuse to waive Jones Act restrictions on foreign-flag vessels?
A: No to both questions. So far, five offers have been accepted and only one offer has been rejected. Fifteen foreign-flag vessels are working on the cleanup, and none required a waiver.
 
Every so often they pump the sand back upon the beach from out in the water. That may not be an option this time.

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Sound is now completely closed to all commercial and recreational fishing. Thursday evening, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality closed the last open portion of Mississippi's territorial marine waters.
 
HOUSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday officially overturned a 16-year-old Texas air permitting program it says violates the Clean Air Act, leaving some of the country's largest refineries in a state of limbo.

"ARCO/BP is very good at managing these types of sites to minimize the amount of money and progress," Dixon said. "They seem to know when to ask for an extension, and they say they are only going to do the minimum at this site."


The man who fired Dixon moved to Washington to head the entire BLM. Bob Abbey's newest job is to revamp the scandal-plagued Minerals Management Service, the agency which approved BP's offshore platforms in the Gulf. The BLM person now in charge of on-shore drilling is Sylvia Baca, who left the Department of Interior nine years ago to become the Vice President of BP. Her department was in charge of BP's emergency response plan for the Gulf. Baca later re-entered the revolving door and returned to the Interior Department in 2009.

Although BP no longer owns the mine site, it is still on the hook legally for all the harm done to the environment in the years when it operated under ARCO. The Environmental Protection Agency has jurisdiction, because the mine is now a superfund site, meaning it needs to be decontaminated. BP has been in no big hurry to fix things, though the company did offer to buy bottled water for residents whose water is too contaminated to drink.
 
July 14 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) will idle two U.S. assembly plants for three days starting on Thursday because of a shortage of electronic control units from Hitachi Ltd (6501.T), a spokesman said.

I hope that technology does not fall into our enemy's hands. That would certainly make things extremely dangerous for us.
 
WASHINGTON, July 15, 2010 (Reuters) — A U.S. Senate oversight committee unanimously passed a plan on Thursday to postpone retirement of the space shuttle as part of a job-saving compromise to the Obama administration's wish to end NASA's program to return astronauts to the moon.

Mixed feelings on that - if we are going to continue the Shuttles, we really need to build new ones.
