Who's fault is the deepening RECESSION

Recession worse, Who's at FAULT

  • Total voters
    23
  • Poll closed .
The Poll left out a big choice...and that is ,both the Republicans and Democrats' ....so I cannot vote. Sorry...also...recessions are somewhat cyclical...probably based on studpid decisions by all politicians and consumers........etc. It's not so easy as everyone thinks.
Mick504 you can vote for both or one or all three in this Poll, voting for Reps and Dems splits the blame!!:D Seems to be some confusion about how you are allowed to vote in a Multiple Choice Poll, sorry.

This is a graph of the US debt and as a percentage of GDP. I won't vote at all, but let people interpret the data as it stands. You decide on your own. Recessions are caused by severe swings in the market system, collapsing economies are caused by other things.

  • Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.
    • Widely attributed to Franklin on the internet, sometimes without the second sentence. It is not found in any of his known writings, and the word "lunch" is not known to have appeared anywhere in english literature until the 1820s, decades after his death. The phrasing itself has a very modern tone and the second sentence especially might not even be as old as the internet. Some of these observations are made in response to a query at Google Answers.
A far rarer but somewhat more credible variation also occurs: "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner." Web searches on these lines uncovers the earliest definite citations for such a statement credit libertarian author James Bovard with a similar one in the Sacramento Bee (1994):
"Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner."This statement also definitely occurs in the "Conclusion" (p. 333) of his book Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty (1994) ISBN 0312123337

My Ben Franklin quote page is corrupt. Damn internet! Left wing conspiracy.

I stand corrected, good quote tho.

Here is another good quote from Ben. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

The man was brilliant.

Ben Franklin never said such a thing. That quote is attributed to author James Bovard, in his 1994 book, ""Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty."

Shame on you 'grunt' my gal Palin is no dim wit - she has thrown off the McCain chains and will rise to the surface and you'll be Allah damn proud when she knocks Barry off his rocking horse.

My point is McCain might as well been a third party candidate running with Palin. What were they thinking.

Tom,

I agree with you and the last election showed it. The GOP could not have done worse in running McCain and Palin. If the GOP does not want to win they should not run anybody. A crusty old career politician and dim wit don't win elections after the Bush legacy. Same old same old.

... and instead will cause more damage. For conservatives, that means adding an independant to the ticket [ballot] in 2012 will simply hand Obama a 2nd term.
When you say ticket, are you meaning if the Republican nominee would add an Independent as his side-kick?
- or conservatives splitting the vote as mentioned & handing the opposition the win?

So what is the answer to correct the problem? Finding a candidate that is not motivated by greed or power. That will be difficult at best. You or I could do the job, but we are not popular, pretty, or willing to pander lobbyist. You have to have money to back you up and people of influence. That makes it impossible to not be influenced. Ross Perot was the one guy that had his own money and was not influenced by the money on the left or right.

Even if you get in and walk the straight and narrow, your handlers will turn on you eventually. It is a self protected club in the beltway. Dems and Repubs close ranks on anyone that tries to ruin their "good thing". Two houses of the same family, protecting the family interests.

We the people are becoming more powerless and the tree of liberty desperately needs to be watered.
Unfortunately, these are not new problems. Over the years, third parties candidates popped up many times and I believe every time they were not only defeated, but they took enough votes away from the losing candidate usually giving the election to the one they were most opposed to.

I went to see a couple of bands play at this small club last night, and it had a coffee shop atmosphere (couches, tables, books) and I came across an old book of Presidents that was lying around. Eisenhower was the last president in the book. Anyway, it had a list of all of the elections going back to Washington, the number of votes, both popular and electoral, and every time a 3rd party was involved, they lost. Even Teddy Roosevelt lost running as a progressive. (He was appointed president as a republican when McKinley was assinated).

So, as much as I would love to see a 3rd party step up and take the job away from the Reps and Dems, history suggests that it is not a reality, and instead will cause more damage. For conservatives, that means adding an independant to the ballot in 2012 will simply hand Obama a 2nd term.

It was Jefferson, "God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure."

Such prophetic words. Those old dead white guys, did have something on the ball, but of course they lived under tyranny and knew what it was like and they really valued their freedom. Most people don't even realize how lucky they are, to have such freedom. I think the majority of the people in this country would gladly sacrifice their freedom if Uncle Sugar sent them a check every month. In others words their freedom can be bought for a pittance.

You got me. I think we may have come closest with Perot, but unfortunately I don't think a 3rd party candidate has a hope in ..... unless this country really falls on hard times and that may be what it'll take to do the trick, at least for those of us that don't like the socialistic, tax loving administration and supporters that are currently destroying any chance for a future where you can better yourself with hard work. But the nanny state, welfare supporters seem content to allow the trend to continue.

I don't know what the answer is, but to continue along this route, regardless of the party, will just lead to trouble, because eventually the producers in this country are just going to get plum fed up with the tax burden. Load up and be ready for anything.

Tree of Liberty.. interesting choice of words. Didn't Thomas Jefferson said it would have to be watered even 200 years or was that someone else?
