Time to Upgrade the Forum, which means...

OK, it looks like I was overreacting yesterday regarding posts getting deleted. The forum data was backed up a couple of days ago to use to start the new forum, but I didn't realize that once the new site is tested and I OK it, they will take another backup of this database and restore it in the new forum.

Sorry about that. I probably scared everyone away.

Thanks to the die-hards who kept coming, and posting, anyway!

Sorry folks. After being down for over 24 hours, I could not get any support with the migration. On to plan B. ;damnit

FYI, the forum may be going down sometime this afternoon. I can't say for how long, but I'll be working on the setup of migrating to the cloud version.

So, keeping you informed, I was trying to update the forum software and took the forum down for a while, but I'm not getting much help from vbulletin (the forum software package). I was hoping to do it over the weekend but I guess they aren't working or just aren't available.

I'm fairly sure the new forum look and feel won't be embraced very well because many of the bells and whistled that we've become accustomed to in the old (this) version, just isn't available on the new one. Unfortunately the old software is no longer being upgraded and security measures are old, so an upgrade is really needed.

Please bear with us. If the new cloud version, which I am trying to take some stress off of my servers - and I did pay for the cloud version for a full year - doesn't do it for us, I will go to their "normal" non-cloud version at some point.

Thanks for your patience during this process!

Thanks Tom, I'm still waiting for the day my prepubescent Commodore 64 skills will come in handy. If it makes you feel any better, I detest change, so likely any upgrades will go unappreciated on my part. But the good news, any changes you make will still be better than what TSP.gov did...

Amen. Liked the 'old' TSP.gov website MUCH better. ;damnit

I have been avoiding this for as long as I could, but now I am basically being forced. :aargh4:

The software version of this forum is quite old, maybe 12 or more years since we've upgraded. The internet and all of its upgrades to software is passing me by and things are breaking and no longer supported, so it's time to take the plunge to upgrade many parts of the TSP Talk website -- and it could take a while.

I was a programmer in my prior life before TSP Talk but things have changed so much since I built this site that I am in the dark about a lot of the new technologies, so while I go through the upgrade, other things on the site may break and I will have to painstakingly work through them.

I may have to reach out to other programmers for help, but if you're reading this and have some abilities in jQuery and / PHP version upgrades, I'd be willing to do trades for premium services, or pay. Otherwise I am going to tackle it myself and we may be in for some temporary technical difficulties.

Your patience will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping that things like the AutoTracker and the premium area will not be impacted, but that is probably wishful thinking as we may experience some downtime, and broken pages while we go through it.

Premium member IFT alerts will not be affected!

Thanks!

I'm going to start with a new version of the forum software, which could start as soon as later today. I'm not sure just yet.

But thanks! It could get ugly before it gets better. :D

Good luck. No clue on programing. As things come up, I'll review as much as I can. I guess one of the Hardest things will be trying to prioritize functions if things get a bit wacky. What are the dates?
