WaMu took it in the shorts.

IBM beat the street by .02 and AMD's losses were better than expected.

GE is the big player in the morning.

Re: This Month in Stocks January: 12/28 - 02/01/2007

GE hit it right on the head, now we need to see decent guidance. SLB missed by 2 cents.

Re: This Month in Stocks January: 12/28 - 02/01/2007

President George W. Bush's administration is considering an individual tax rebate of up to 800 dollars as a short term measure to help boost the sagging US economy, a media report said Friday.
Wow. I don't know if this is a good sign or bad. How bad are things that they are going to send out emergency checks to help the consumer? The market isn't exactly jumping for joy over it. S&P still down 10 after the announcement.

It is nothing but a Band-Aid. We need good paying jobs to keep it up after the rebate check is spent.

I've already got mine spent. LOL

It's like getting an asprin from the Dr. for a broken leg. Check, please!

Re: This Month in Stocks January: 12/28 - 02/01/2007

Rebates at this time amount to nothing more then sound bites. The cash obtained by any of these new ill tought out programs will be used to make late payments on credit card bill, cars and such. No new spending will be generated. Those making more than 85K will get nothing. And for the most part, that is the very segment of the population bringing the economy to its knees.
just my opinion
Cash is king for now.

The Week Ahead

Last Update: 18-Jan-08 10:32 ET

The markets are closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. As for the remainder of the week, economic data is sparse, although plenty of earnings reports will keep market participants busy.

Economic data is restricted to weekly jobless claims, weekly oil inventories, and December home sales. Further detail on these items can be previewed on our Economic Calendar.

As far as the earnings reporting goes, it gets dialed up a few notches in the coming week as 85 S&P 500 components are due to report their results versus just 28 in the prior week. Some of the headliners include Bank of America (BAC), DuPont (DD), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Apple (AAPL), AT& T (T), Pfizer (PFE), United Technologies(UTX), Microsoft (MSFT), Ford (F) and Caterpillar (CAT).

Re: This Month in Stocks January: 12/28 - 02/01/2007

According to the Stock Trader's Almanac (STA), which I would highly recommend buying each year, JAN. is the 3rd strongest month and FEB. is the 11th. I will add that seasonality is out the window so far this year. You be the judge.

Re: This Month in Stocks January: 12/28 - 02/01/2007

Ben Stein was on CBS morning show. I always like listening to him. Bueller. Any way he was commenting on the current market conditions and said the we won't truly know that we are in recession until six months have passed. The the longest one was 14 months. Buy index stocks. Be the first one to your job and the last to leave. Hold off any major purchases until things get better. There was more, I hit the high points.

Stein is a great guy to listen to. I appreciate his views on our military troops.

Just some definitions.

Crash

A major decline in a financial market.

Crashes are substantial and lingering. To be considered a crash, the market decline must be evidenced as a 20% drop in an index's total value.

Panic selling

Wide-scale selling of an investment, causing a sharp decline in price. In most instances of panic selling, investors just want to get out of the investment, with little regard for the price at which they sell.

The main problem with panic selling is that investors are selling in reaction to pure emotion and fear, rather than evaluating fundamentals. Almost every market crash is a result of panic selling. Most major stock exchanges use trading curbs and halts to limit panic selling, to allow people to digest any information on why the selling is occurring, and to restore some degree of normalcy to the market.

Correction

A reverse movement, usually negative, of at least 10% in a stock, bond, commodity or index. Corrections are generally temporary price declines, interrupting an uptrend in the market or asset.

A healthy market will correct from time to time.

Recession

A significant decline in activity spread across the economy, lasting longer than a few months. It is visible in industrial production, employment, real income and wholesale-retail trade. The technical indicator of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product (GDP).

Recession is a normal (albeit unpleasant) part of the business cycle. A recession generally lasts from six to 18 months.

Interest rates usually fall in recessionary times to stimulate the economy by offering cheap rates at which to borrow money.

Uptick Rule

A former rule established by the SEC that requires that every short sale transaction be entered at a price that is higher than the price of the previous trade. This rule was introduced in the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 as Rule 10a-1. The uptick rule prevents short sellers from adding to the downward momentum when the price of an asset is already experiencing sharp declines. The SEC eliminated the rule on July 6, 2007.

The uptick rule was also be known as the "plus tick rule".

By entering a short sale order with a price above the current bid, a short seller ensures that his or her order is filled on an uptick. The uptick rule is disregarded when trading some types of financial instruments such as futures, single stock futures, currencies or market ETFs such as the QQQQ or SPDRs. These instruments can be shorted on a downtick because they are highly liquid and have enough buyers willing to enter into a long position, ensuring that the price will rarely be driven to unjustifiably low levels.

The Week Ahead

Last Update: 25-Jan-08 10:32 ET

A full slate of earnings reports is on tap for next week, but the market will likely relegate many of those announcements to the backburner knowing the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) convenes January 29-30 to talk further about monetary policy.

As of this writing, fed funds futures are pricing in a 52% probability of a 25 basis point ease (up from 24% yesterday) and a 48.0% probability of a 50 basis point cut (down from 76.0% yesterday). The opinion is pretty mixed, then, as to the scope of the move, but the opinion is clear that a cut of some sort is expected.

Separately, the economic calendar will be a focal point too, with a number of noteworthy reports on the docket. In particular, the New Home Sales, Durable Orders, Advanced Q4 GDP, Personal Income and Spending, January Employment, and ISM Index reports are all headed your way. For further information on each of these reports, be sure to visit our Economic Calendar.

On the earnings front, eight Dow components will release their results, and will be joined by other luminaries such as Amazon.com (AMZN), Starbucks (SBUX), Yahoo! (YHOO), MasterCard (MA) and Google (GOOG). A complete list of all companies reporting can be previewed on Briefing.com's Earnings Calendar.

What Do You Think?

With Wednesday's dramatic turnaround has the U.S. stock market finally reached bottom?

Yes. It's time to go shopping.

No. This was a sucker's rally.
