Steel_Magnolia's Account Talk

I like it when members mention what they buy in their outside accounts - it offers an opportunity tp personalize. I have no quams about putting my purchases out there - who knows someone may benefit from the previous research. It's all about information.

Yep, I agree 100% with that.

A personal note.

To remember the Sergeant, a police officer in civilian life, who took my nephew under his wing in Iraq in 2003. Taught him how to survive as he delivered messages on foot from one area to another. Played baseball with him in the off-hours to feel a small piece of home. Wept with him in the basement of Saddam's son's palace. And rejoiced with him when they both came home safely.

The Sergeant who then answered his country's call in Afghanistan. And then again for a second tour.

Remembering Sergeant 1st Class James Thode, killed November 29, 2010, by a roadside bomb.

Ann, how sad you must feel, how terribly sad your nephew must feel. I do, and it's no one I know. Gratitude for those whose life paths crossed ours and made all the difference. A young lieutenant took my new-recruit 20-somethng hard-drinking brother under his wing for the first few years as a spiritual mentor, it made all the difference in my brother's newly-awkened spiritual life. For a lot of years before the lieutenant, there were very real doubts whether brother would survive his 20s physically due to the drinking.

25+ years sober years later, my brother is alive well and thriving, with a loving half-grown family. Wherever that lieutenant is, I hope his life is the same.

Ann,
I've thought about this quite a bit since first reading it briefly yesterday or the day before. In numerous reflections ~ as sad as the news is ~ there may be something glorious in this and that's what I want you to reflect on. First of all - your brief description speaks volumes about this man and in that regard no one could die with more dignity, respect, and honor.

So First of all - because you're willing to share your heart with us - we are able to deeply reflect on the worth this man beheld and the legacy he has left. This is a very wonderful testimony Ann.

Considering 'Death' itself - I'm glad he was able to die (quickly) and that his death to a large degree all the more highlights and magnifies the testimony of his life. He was (and is) the highest example.

The saddest part is that every soldier that died over there has a very similar story and those connected are thrown in a difficult situation on how to deal with it.

I hope your nephew is able to hold his memory in a beautiful way for years to come.

December 30, 2010 Zacks "Profit From the Pros"

The points that stuck with me:

All signs pointing to a positive year. Seen a lot of ‘the market is overbought’ articles lately. But if you’re thinking I’ll get back in when it sells off, well, you’ve been missing the last 40 points. Just get back in, the water’s fine. Remember the old adage ’the trend is your friend.’

Getting tired of market timing. If general outlook for the market is positive then why would I take money off the table? These 40 point runs can happen at any time. So why would I want to try for any of those little ins and outs.

How soon we forget the bad times. I'm not saying this is coming any time soon, but a 10% correction or a negative 20% plus year will remind you why friends don't let friends buy and hold. :)

Yeah, 2008 was ugly with a capital UGG.

And I guess I should have clarified. The points that stuck with me weren't necessarily the things I agreed with, because I do not agree with buy-and-pray. They were just the points they made that I remembered best. I was trying to hurry to get this posted so people could see and read it by the IFT deadline, which I didn't quite make anyway.

So to clarify: I think that "The trend is your friend" is a very wise statement. I think that if you try to buy and hold without paying attention to the trends in the market, that's a good way to lose your seed corn!

Is that something you're comfortable with, Tom?

Absolutely. The trend is the key. So yes, no real reason to be a seller until we see some support taken out.

If 2011 turns out like 1995 there will be no consolidations greater than 3.8% - I'll eat those for breakfast. There is so much liquidity on the sidelines it won't pay to get off the tracks. But we all throw our money away in different styles.

You eat consolidations for breakfast? Yummy!!!:D

On this first day of the new year I'm reminded of one of my grandfather's favorite sayings. So I'd like to make a toast:

May those who love us, love us.
And those who don't
May they turn their ankles
So we'll know them by their limping.

:D

To all my friends, past, present, future, may you have a most happy safe and prosperous new year!

Happy New Year Ann, we celebrate you're here with us to celebrate. You and Squalebear too. May the new year treat you both well.

Ken Fisher gives thumbs up to 2011

Do you know a stock market advisor named Ken Fisher? He writes the occasional column for Forbes.com and CXO rates him as 14% more accurate than the average stock market guru since 2000. Birch will love the fact that he sees us in a strong continuing bull market.

Here are some excerpts from his latest column, dated December 30, 2010:

"As 2011 begins a little perspective is in order. ...It adds up to a serious case of false fears. It's bullish music to my ears.

As mentioned in last month's column, the aftermath of midterm elections is political peace and quiet. History shows that we haven't had a negative third year of a President's term since 1939...."

The entire column can be found at
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2011/0...lio-strategy-find-stocks.html?feed=rss_author

and the one just prior to that, entitled "Gridlock is Good for Stocks" is at
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/1220/investing-ken-fisher-portfolio-strategy-stocks-gridlock.html

And I couldn't recommend them more highly!
