Week Ahead: A Holiday Market Surge?
Friday, December 19, 2008

The upcoming week is likely to be quiet -- at least on the business-news front -- due to the Christmas holiday, but sentiment is building that the market might rally into the end of the year. On Friday, the major indexes were mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 25.88 to 8579.11, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 2.60 to 887.90 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 11.95 to 1564.32.

Some market professionals were bullish in light of recent rallies, and as the market heads toward year’s end, when stocks often see a rally. In a research note, Robert Pavlik of Oaktree Asset Management says he has seen “a reduction in the overall selling pressure."In addition, he noted that “while we are not advocating an aggressive ‘all-in’ investment approach, we are seeing select buying opportunities and we are using bouts of market weakness to position our clients into high-quality early cyclical sectors and industry leading companies which we believe will emerge from the current recession in a stronger more competitive position.” Pavlik said he’s also optimistic because of the amount of cash on the sidelines and the “large number of reluctant and underperforming portfolio managers” that could turn more optimistic if they start to see stocks rally.

James Paulsen of Wells Capital Management agreed, and said that a comparison of this current downturn with four previous market panics [1903, 1907, 1920 and 1973-74] shows that things might not be so bad. Paulsen said that each time, the markets recovered to their pre-crisis peak levels “within about 12 to 18 months of reaching their respective bear market lows.” He said “it implies the S&P 500 should more than double from its 752.44 low established in November by May 2010.” Paulsen did mention that he left out 1929 and 1937, when it took the markets 25 years and eight years, respectively, to recover to peak levels. Not everyone is so optimistic, though. “The recession and tight credit is not going away anytime soon. Ugly is in for the consumer, being ordinary and spending less,” said Maryann Hurley of D. A. Davidson in emailed comments.

Monday brings earnings from Circuit City, which has filed for bankruptcy protection, as well as Walgreen. Technology company Red Hat also reports. On Tuesday, Micron and American Greetings release their earnings results. On Wednesday, Christmas Eve, most financial markets close at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Thursday is Christmas Day, and most markets are closed entirely. Friday looks to be especially quiet on the earnings and news front, as many market participants are likely to take an extended Christmas weekend. With the lighter volume for the holiday week, volatility could be higher than usual.

Other issues to watch in the week ahead include developments on the auto industry after General Motors and Chrysler were promised $14.3 billion in aid from the U.S. Treasury, and Ford Motor looked to be in line for money if needed. Also, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson has asked Congress to tap the second $350 billion from the initial $700 billion bailout fund, Treasury bonds continue to trade at historically low yields and oil is under $40 a barrel -- all worth keeping an eye on in the coming trading sessions.

Yesterdays $.02 per share increase in C wasn't enough to to give a .01% increase in my allocation C versus the normal G daily increase. My TSP account lists me at 98.00%G and and 2.00%C so I am going to have to stand pat for Monday unless it looks like a big down day and then I will put in an IFT for a rebalance to the values above.

So 1%(C) with a 0.0257 tsp cent gain wasn't enough to add a .01% gain
to the (C) Fund. I'm glad you mentioned that because it reminds me that
the percentages allocated are considered "overall" percentages. In other
words, the (G) Fund gain percentage of .01% offset the (C) Fund. So the
starting level of 1% being allocated in the (C) Fund alone would require a
.00785% gain (or greater) on Tuesdays thru Fridays. Because of the larger
(G) gain on Mondays, a .022782% gain (or greater) would be required.

So, by allocating 2% in any given fund would cut the requirement in half.
Further, you CAN'T change the requirements by simply adding 1% to any
other fund. ie.... (96-1-1-1-1). If your looking for the ability to bump up
any of the 1% allocated funds, what ever fund beats the requirements
would be eligable for a <1%IFT bump up on the next day. But you must
realize that any fund that was subject to loses would be required to be
changed as well. Either rounded up to its original % or lowered. This will
also play a part in your decision making when comparing your results in
each of your individual funds.

For me, I eliminate the (F) Fund all together when I reach my desired
<1%IFT levels (as seen in the autotracker). This may or may not be a
mistake, but it complicates the whole situation. I also make it easy on
myself by figuring out my comfort level concerning risk and dividing that
amount by three. ie..... Risk Tolerance = $12000.00 / 3 = $4000.00
So, If my current balance was $100,000 my starting level goal would be
a modifiable 88%(G) 0%(F) 4%(C) 4%(S) 4%(I) and subject to change
based on unforseen circumstances (either up or down).

There was so much good information included in this post, I'm gonna copy
it to my thread as well. Like I said at the start, I'm glad you mentioned
the lack of % change within your account. It might help some of our friends
out in their investigative efforts concerning the potential <1%IFT benefits.

SB, good to see you posting. I hope you are feeling better or at least the drugs are making you feel better.

There is 12" of snow on the ground here in the last 48 hrs and more on the way all through Christmas day. Definately going to be a white one here. The 4X4 truck's chained up and ready to roll.

The county called last night and asked me to pick up a nurse that was stranded and deliver her to the work at the hospital. It was a fun ride. Being a volunteer emergency worker gives me an excuse to go play in weather like this.:D:D Stay safe and get healthy. JB45

Its definately the steriods and yes, when on them, I'm feeling pretty good.
But its only a 8 day process out of doctors fear of addiction. I can truly
understand why, as I fear what it will be like after they've run there coarse.
One thing I'm going to check out is a epidoral injection which could bring
relief for up to 3 months. Thanks for caring and making me feel better.;)

A White Christmas is as exciting as it gets here in New Jersey. Maybe a
day or two after as well. But after that, the hour comute gets old in the
white stuff. We've had sheets of Ice, which as you know, make chains
and driving as dangerous as it gets. Your volunteerism is admirable and
I'm sure you find time to squeeze in a few pre-planned 360's in a open
lot somewhere. Have fun and be careful. ;)

Same here, SB. Anything to make the pain manageable til they can get it fixed for real. I was on morphine for 2+ weeks years ago, went through withdrawals with busted bones-didn't know it was withdrawals at the time. didn't figure that out til a year later when I went back on morphine for 5 days post-surgery. I avoided the Tylenol-3 (codeine) they gave me upon hospital release, for fear of addiction, and did ok. couldn't have lived w/o the morphine, at one point I begged for it (pain relief, not addiction). The withdrawals were highly highly unpleasant, but I lived through them, wasn't sure I would at the time, esp. since didn't understand that's what was happening or why.

JB, been in 4x4 the entire past week. Finally replaced battery yesterday pm, gave up on old battery after several jump starts over several days, just wouldn't hold a charge, despite finally getting oil pan heater (had to wait, they were out of stock).

Took my disable vet neighbor to grocery store last night, he hasn't been able to drive since stroke 3 years ago, city taxi monthly discount tickets for senior/disabled citizens have been discontinued-run out of funds (grant program?-sign of times). :( Glad I could help him for once, he's been helping me in other ways lately.

Good on you, in this day and age most people would not take the time. I admire those that go out of their way to help others. Have a great day, :)

Its the unknown and being left in the dark which brings the fear out in me.
The sharing of others experiences has shined a bright light on what there
is to see. I'm forever greatful in more ways then words can express.

Your TYPING seems to be MUCH BETTER, that's GOOD!!

I'm glad I never read what I write, I'm sure I'd be abit embarassed.:embarrest:
Holding my neck in one hand and typing with the other (on drugs)
had to be quite interesting.

Great to see you in good spirits and I don't want to see you out there shoveling any of that white stuff. Be safe and enjoy the beginning of a new year and new hope!

I'll save my energy for when I get back to work and start shoveling thru
the real heavy stuff. If I can get through that, then even dealing with
the inmates will seem like a vacation. :nuts: {read into that statement}

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I DID A <1%IFT of 88-0-4-4-4 TO OFFSET THE
HUGE LOSSES WE'RE SEEING RIGHT NOW AND PICKING UP TONS OF
CHEAPER SHARES. GOSH I HOPE WE'LL SEE A MIDDAY BOUNCE TODAY
AND A MEGA RALLY THEREAFTER. GOOD LUCK TO US ALL ! WE NEED IT.

We've got about 20 minutes before the updates come out. I hope.
Anyway, the EAFE ended down -1.10%,,,,,the EFA ended down -0.62%
and the BTAEX ended down 0.93%,,,, we only had a $0.03 deficit that
was owed, so I'm thinking the Fund Managers will add to it,,, let's say
another $0.03 tsp cents,,,,,,so I'm guessing we'll see a closing price for
the (I) Fund at approximately $13.68 per share. This was done to have
alittle fun while I wait.

I estimate my <1%IFT today will net additional cheaper shares by;
26%(C) 26%(S) 1.7%(I) while selling approximately 2.39% of my (G)
Fund shares to accomplish the above.

IMPORTANT

I've found a calculation mistake within my figures concerning the O/D Tracker. Sorry for the error. Here is the update which includes the correct
Deficit. The current Deficit is NOT 0.0034 TSP Cents. Instead it would be 0.0938 TSP Cents. Sorry for any inconvenience. :(

THIS MIGHT BE A YEAR LONG MISTAKE, IF I'M RIGHT, IT'LL BE CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY AND I'M SORRY TO LET YOU DOWN !

Hey there Bother Bear, I'm surprised Mr. **** hasn't sent you a personal letter scolding you for your wicked <1% IFT ways! :p

The data is interesting, I wish there was a way for the auto tracker to take this into account, after all it is just a re-balance. The real question is how much money have you made or lost with this system, compared to playing it straight? I like to play by the tracker rules, only because I want to compare my returns with others. I'm hoping they will be able to include this new feature into the auto tracker so we can have an accurate comparison of how others are doing.

The errors I previously eluded to were the result of rounding off. I was taking
the daily deficit/overpayment and adding them together to draw a ACCUM
YTD figure. Over time, the rounding off process allowed for a accumulating
error. The good news is that the error was consistant enough to draw the
same conclusions as the accurate figures. With that said, I'll be updating
the last O/D Tracker with the corrected figures. I'm planning on changing
the format just abit. You'll see DAILY O/D's and YTD O/D's instead. This
will allow for easier understanding of what happens daily and how far away
from its YTD Goal the figures represent.

In a perfect world, that would be cool. But the Autotracker was made to
be a generalized accounting of percentage gains/losses based on a fun
competition type setting. It was never meant to be "Fractionaly" ready
for the <1%IFT method. If the software could be altered to the four digit
system and recognize a limitation of rounding up,,,,, ya know what,,,,,,,
it would be an intensive change. The Autotrackers goals are compatable
with the general rule of thumb, that the TSP authors. I was thinking that
my <1%IFT entries are going to complicate it's fun nature and confuse
newer members of its intent and rules. It's for those reasons that I've
elected to utilized my spreadsheet to track them instead.

Hey there Bother Bear, I'm surprised Mr. **** hasn't sent you a personal letter scolding you for your wicked <1% IFT ways!

Mr.**** could do just that ! But the Amount of Money involved plays a
very big part in the expense that they were crying about. You know, the
expense that skyrocketed upward "AFTER" limits were imposed. So the
small numbers I'm playing with will probably not become an issue. Now, if
I had 90% of my money in the (I) Fund and rebalanced everyday, I would
be banished from the Land of OZ. (and my little dog too).

CORRECTED AND ACCURATE. KEY WAS ADJUSTED BACK
TO ITS ORIGINAL SETTINGS BEFORE THIS YEARS TOTAL

ELIMINATED AND THE CONSISTANCY I'VE COME TO FEEL
COMFORTABLE WITH HAS RETURNED. ALL ALONG I FELT
THE O/D TRACKER WAS BEING RENDERED USELESS DUE
TO THE EXTREME SWINGS THAT WERE GENERATED BY
THE FUND MANAGERS, WHEN IT WAS ULTIMATELY BASED
ON MY ERROR. AGAIN, I'M SORRY !
