Is Merck a balancing factor, with good earnings ?

Apples to oranges sector wise and BAC is a S&P component while MRK is not. Financials is what the street is hinging everything on cuz we need a free flow of credit to expand business.

BAC was the bar that the media set up over the weekend and it missed. So was GE and they missed big the market sold off and rallied back. Go figure, crazy market.

Not to respond for James, but I live in Michigan. I don't have any unemployment numbers, but I do know that there have been a lot of layoffs from the automakers over the years. I had to laugh when the news made a big deal about half a year ago over a business breaking ground that would employ 50 people. 50 people. whoopee. Don't remember what it was, only that it was a trade job, meaning specialized. So I don't know how many local people without a job would be able to land one.

Housing here is terrible. I was stupid and bought a big house without being contingent on my other house selling. Sat on that house for a year and a half before even an offer. (it was on a lake... would never have imagined a house on a lake not getting an offer). Thankfully, that offer went through and we got rid of it. There are houses for sale everywhere here, and not many people buying.

Am I bearish? For the longterm, yes. I don't know how much pull Bush inc has, but my opinion is that he'll use everything he has to float the economy to the end of the year as best he can, then let the next president try to fix it while they get blamed. Presto - Democrats do a "terrible" job (thanks to the right wing machine), and another republican gets in after a 4 year interlude. That's my anti-Bush pessimistic side. :)

Sorry to hijack your thread, got on a role. In short, it sucks in Michigan right now.

James,

Mich. is getting beat because of big auto, yes/no? Also, how are housing prices?

Auto is only a segment of the economy here. They don't build cars in Michigan anymore- or at least they build only a fraction of what they once did.

Housing prices? Down roughly 20% in 3 years across the board. In my area, prices are down about 25%.

Sorry to hijack the thread. I think I'll go start a thread to talk specifically about the economy where I am- so you can get a feel for what it is like to live in an area experiencing not recession, but actual depression.

See you soon on that thread- as soon as I figure out a good place to put it....

I started a "Recession/Depression?" thread over in "The Economy" forum.

Chime in there with your story.

Show-me- please accept my apologies for all the doom and gloom in your thread.

You may now resume your regularly scheduled programming....:toung:

Show-me,

Joined you for a short-term trade and Bought QID today @ $42.6181. I'm looking to flip long once we get oversold again. I will not hold this trade very long. To many retail Bulls this week so they should try and shake out a few more of them before they run it back up. Short-term I'm looking for more selling pressure and wating to see if the Bulls can hold 1360 this week.

Good luck and Take Care!

Still 100% G fund for now.

If you did not know this about me, I'm bearish. LOL Oscar hit a home run with the fact that for the first time that I can remember we are actually rationing a major food staple, rice. Now that is sad and amazing at the same time.

Remember the guy who took a beating by the media by predicting $100 barrel oil? Sad and amazing again.

Big ships take a long time to turn around and this economy has not rounded the corner yet.

I was at baseball practice last night and was talking to a trucker friend. Truckers are starting to do a lot of "drive away". That was the first time I heard of a trucker doing it as I heard of car driver doing all the time.

Gasoline jumped to $3.59 here and that is killing consumers. I figure it cost my wife, in her van, $10 round trip to go to town daily.

We are having a late spring here and the farmers have just started to break ground for corn. Then it rained. Diesel is sky high and every day later they don't get their corn in it reduces their yields. Many reduced the amount of corn acres for beans or wheat. Fertilizer is like GOLD, take a look at POT earning today. Flooding is becoming a issue and when summer hits who knows.

My pantry is a little low and will go the extra mile to put some food away.

I'm still waiting on my stimulus check. I will not be stimulating the economy with it.

Good luck folks and watch what you say on a public message board.

If you did not know this about me, I'm bearish.

Looks like Oscar might be scratching his head with the action in the $TRAN in his new video.

As far as the stimulus, I'm with you Show-Me. We'll leave stimulating of the economy to somebody else. I can't wait to see the ads at Walmart and Best Buy soon.... "Widescreen TV's $599, Zero Interest".

Haha.

He is turning the corner. Speaking of stimulus, I noticed a ton of businesses offering 5% to 10% more if you buy gift card with your entire stimulus check. Kroger, Wal-mart, and some others. I see this as a desperate attempt to pull consumers into the stores. I may work but many will not do it.

At that price I'd be afraid it's not only zero interest [payments], it's also zero interest [not interested].

Best choice if you want to be patriotic while buying TVs is the upstart company Vizio, since they are based in the U.S. Ok, they buy panels from overseas. But the designs are done in the U.S., and in buying overseas they aren't different from the bulk of U.S. electronics companies. Warning - as a young company, even though they are seen as an innovative company now, their saying power is not assured. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120820684382013977.html?mod=hps_us_pageone and http://www.vizio.com
