I believe the government intervention into every aspect of this crisis is going to prolong the bottoming cycle because of the artificial money supply. The chickens will come home to roost, Alt-A's, ARM's, commercial property defaults, credit card defaults, and the $55 trillion in CDS floating around.

We have two credit card companies that became bank holding co. last month so they can get bailout money. Do they need it or do they just want it?

Consumers are wising up a bit and starting to save. Consumer credit posted it's largest decline since the 1940's when they started keeping data, so it is not all the consumers doing as there is no credit.

BLS unemployment numbers are not real and that is finally coming out in the press. Three State's had their unemployment systems crash due to volume.

Retailers will close, it has started, and that means big layoffs.

Service sector accounts for 70% of GDP and in the private sector service sector jobs account for 85% of employment. In other word we don't make squat in this country.

Washington is throwing money at the problem to help out the big boyz and so that the public can not say that they sat back and did nothing. I is easier to say we tried than we did nothing.

In other words sell any rally.

Funny how the financial industry got the personal bankruptcy laws changed just in time. Can you say indentured servant? Your offspring will be indentured the government for many decades to come.

Boy Show-me,

Your last 2 post were right on the mark. Hammer meet nail. I've raised my daughter to be a saver and she is tighter than I am and she has no illusions about the feds being able to take care of those that play by the rules and try to do the right thing. She knows she's on her own.

The Week Ahead

Last Update: 09-Jan-09 09:29 ET

Fourth quarter earnings reporting season kicks off in the coming week. In addition, there will be plenty of economic data and Fed speakers.

Despite Dow component Alcoa (AA) marking the unofficial start to fourth quarter earnings season on Monday, the pace of reports is still relatively slow with only 17 companies confirmed to report on the Earnings Calendar. Some of the bigger names reporting next week include Intel (INTC), Genentech (DNA) and Sony (SNE).

There are 12 economic reports scheduled. The Producer Price Index on Thursday and the Consumer Price Index on Friday will be widely watched due to the increasing concerns regarding deflation. More information can be found at Briefing.com's Economic Calendar.

Expect a week packed with Fed speakers, including Fed Chairman Bernanke lecturing the London School of Economics Monday morning.

Hi Show-me,
I'm just about to shut down and finish up my charts but wanted to say hello before I left.

YOUR LAST POST SHOULD BE LISTED AS A "MUST READ"

Alcoa just shut down a lot of their plants and made major reductions in the workforce. Intel also had recent significant bad news. The others didn't stand out a lot but overall I know how 4th Q went.

Anyway - hope all is well - and I'll come back to the previous post next week.

Hello to you too.

All is good and better, just got back from my ENT doc in Columbia and my cancer is holding steady and the spot on my lung is gone! I am Blessed big time!

I must not have been paying attention because this is the first I've heard about you and the C word.

Very glad about the good news and I hope it gets better and better.

Ditto that, Show-Me. So glad for the good news. Pretty fond of you, want you to stick around a whole lot longer with the rest of the winners (not sure I'm one of them yet, #125 is it? YTD?, but you belong in the winners circle for sure).

That's great news Show-me. :D I know how a major health problem can really weigh on your mind. I had a 5x bypass 5 years ago and still going strong. I'll be thinking good thoughts for ya.

Thanks everyone, I had a minor chin surgery on the week of Thanksgiving to remove a small nodule and this was my follow up. My calcitonin is the marker they use to follow the cancer. This is very good news for my family and I go back for my next test in nine months. The spot on my lung was a big deal and that had me very worried.

Going to take my bride out for a nice lunch today to celebrate.

Excellent news! Next test in 9-months? That sounds encouraging.
