Seat 19A

+2 for Bullitt for bringing up that Wall Street Journal opinion piece. It's exactly spot-on.

When we change what we do for "irrational fear" of what someelse else may do...when we take away freedoms for that kind of fear, the bad guys win. I'm a firm believer that we should never let the bad guys win.

As for flying with weapons- I say this.

First, we should all take off all our clothes at the point of boarding the aircraft. No clothing left on at all.

Then, we fly to the destination buck naked.

Ought to work to bring up those airline sales too- lots of people would start to travel not for the destination, but instead for the trip.

Would bring up airline seat sales in a heart-beat. :-)

Maybe we should start a TSP book club, anyone want to send me a copy of "The Utility of Force"? When I'm done I will send it postage paid to the next reader. When there is no more demand, the last reader sends it back to the owner?

If postage is an issue I'll pay that upfront.

So UPS delivered my free shipping order today, just getting started on 'the utility of force', i hope it takes a while longer than usual, most times i start a book then stay up all night(s) reading until it's finished, one of new year's resolution is quality over quantity.

alevin has first dibs but i think after that the library is open.

I'm all for that, usually i just drive, cuts down on the awkward questions and stares, not to mention the repeated statements to authorities, but nothing wrong with ride sharing.

probably would help with the climate change problem too, but do i have to pay extra for checked bags? purchasing a whole new wardrobe can get pretty expensive in those duty free shops.

"Utility of Force" is not a quick read. You'll have to spend some time with it, and carry it through to the end. One thing he could have used is a better editor- as some of it is repetitive. But by the end, you'll 'get it' a little better, and I thought it was worth the read.

It's on the National Defense University's Commandant's reading list , http://www.ndu.edu/library/ReadingList/JFCSReading2009.pdf

and the Army War College's reading list:

If you are a serious military thinker, it's one that should be included in your knowledge base.

Good luck.

Speaking of military required reading lists, I recently mentioned the best non-fiction book I read last year-Three Cups of Tea, about one man's vision and life purpose, and the benefits of educating women and girls in Pakistan and helping communities help themselves with economic development.

I began reading Greg Mortensen's second book this week, Stones into Schools, which continues the story. He has expanded into northern Afghanistan in the years since the first book-by request of the people of several different tribes. I learned that Colin Powell, General Petraus, JOC Admiral Mike Mullen, and SOCOM commander Eric Olson have all read Three Cups of Tea, and that the book is now required reading for all officers enrolled in counterinsurgency courses at the Pentagon.

I already passed the first book on to a family member but its not hard to find-Walmart carries it as a trade paperback. For anyone who chooses to read the first book, and is interested in more, I will buy the paperback and pass it on postage paid-it just came out in November. I want to keep my hardback for me.

Torture or not to torture. For it or against just because the lap dance bomber is spewing his guts for cookies and milk does not mean some of the hard core freaks he!! bent on killing anything with a heartbeat will do the same.
No novocaine given full speed ahead. IMHO

If torture doesn't work, why do we do it?

If capital punishment doesn't deter crime, why do we have it?

Maybe it's the human condition. I like to think that it's not.

Who sez it doesn't work...........it has deterred me from committing a couple.:D

To the goody two-shoes that are against the Death Sentence...

Have one of your children molested and murdered by some low life and see if you would say..in a typical Michael Jackson sounding voice..."Oh it's okay, just put him prison and keep him alive for the rest of his life, while my child is rotting underground....he didn't mean it"

Scuse me..I have to puke...

Well, that's interesting. Where is the evidence that the death penalty deters criminal activity?

Where is the evidence that torture provides useful intelligence?

I question the "truthiness" of some of the facts.

Sorry- I do not believe in the death sentence.

Vengence is the Lord's. Not mine.

I am pro-life.

Period.
I totally respect that...

But I will ask you the same question from earlier I posted..If something were to happen horrible to one of your kids (God Forbid) and you clearly without doubt, knew the Low life was totally guilty..Would you rather he spend the rest of his life in jail or avenge your kid's death with his?

Reach down deep and think about it....I believe God would understand.

I would rather that another life NOT be forfeited.
---------------------
Matthew 18: 21
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"
22Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[f]
----------------------

I would grieve, but then I would ask God to forgive the man who did that. I cannot support anyone "avenging" anything. God did not tell us to avenge one another. He told us to love one another.
