SAD times for HUMMER

Oh Sure!, This is fair..
You're right, BUT it has nothing to do with Progressive, or not. It's just foolish - electricity may be cheaper than gas, but you should still have to pay to "gas" up with electricity. The city is providing enough of a service by making it available (now *that's* Progressive!). This is not a serious proposal, electricity generation will always cost money (even if you use methane from a landfill). Ok, smarty, the whole town now has hybrids, whatcha gonna do? Never gonna happen? Are you sure? What if gas goes to $4 again? If Cedar Rapids had a serious proposal, they'd be ready for that possibility.

:(:(...You beat me to it..Just found this, this morning..

2009 Hummer H2NEW YORK – Hummer, the off-road vehicle that once symbolized America's love for hulking SUVs, has hit a dead end after its sale to a Chinese heavy equipment maker collapsed late Wednesday.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. pulled out of the deal to buy the company from General Motors Co. Tengzhong failed to get clearance from Chinese regulators within the proposed timeframe for the sale, the Chinese manufacturer said Wednesday.

GM said it will continue to honor existing Hummer warranties.

"We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. "GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."

GM has been trying to sell the loss-making brand for the last year and signed a deal with Tengzhong in October. However, resistance from Chinese regulators, who have been putting the brakes on investment in the fast-growing Chinese auto industry, created difficulties from the start.

As recently as Tuesday, private investors were trying to set up an offshore entity in a last-minute effort to complete the acquisition ahead of a Feb. 28 deadline. That plan, along with other options, was unsuccessful, according to a person close to the situation. The person declined to be identified in order to speak more freely.

"There's no way forward with that," this person said. "We're out of time."

GM spokesman Nick Richards said the automaker would still hear last-minute bids for the brand.

"In the early phases of the wind-down, we'll entertain offers and determine their viability, but that will have to happen in pretty short order," he said.

Hummer, which traces its origins to the Humvee military vehicle built by AM General LLC in South Bend, Ind., acquired a devoted following among SUV lovers who were drawn to the off-road ready vehicles. But they drew scorn from environmentalists and sales never recovered after gasoline prices spiked above $4 a gallon in the summer of 2008.

Sales peaked at 71,524 in 2006. But in December 2009, only 325 Hummers were sold, down 85 percent from the previous year, according to Autodata Corp.

Sticker prices start at more than $42,500 and run to about $63,000, according to data posted at the Hummer.com Web site. The H3, the most fuel-efficient vehicle in Hummer's lineup, averages about 16 mpg. The vehicles are built at GM's factory in Shreveport, La.

Under the initial agreement to sell Hummer, Tengzhong would have received an 80 percent stake, while Hong Kong investor Suolang Duoji, who indirectly owns a big stake in Tengzhong, would have gotten 20 percent. The investors would also have owned Hummer's nationwide dealer network.

Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed, although a person briefed on the deal at the time said the sale price was around $150 million. GM's bankruptcy filing last summer said that the brand could bring in $500 million or more.

Beijing had been cool to the acquisition. Tengzhong lacks a government permit to manufacture cars, and Beijing has been seeking to streamline and slow investment in the fast-growing auto industry rather than to attract newcomers.

Richards, the GM spokesman, said the collapse of the sale does not change earlier plans to close the Shreveport facility by 2012. The plant also builds the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon and is currently operating on a single 10-hour shift, he said. Hummer production was idled in January.

Hummer is the second brand after Saturn that GM has failed to sell as part of its restructuring. GM sold Swedish brand Saab to Dutch carmaker Spyker Cars NV earlier this year. Pontiac is being discontinued.

GM is focusing its efforts on its four remaining brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick.

don't take that sunset ride just yet buster, there's more snow on the way, unfortunate folks stuck in the ditch still need your capabilities and help.

A little harsh there Buster, don't cha think?
Well the good news is the renewable fuel E85 H3 Hummer is not far off- and, by your story- a biodiesel isn't far away. If they just can find a diesel engine to power Hummer that meets U.S. emission standards- they might be able to do a biodiesel hummer shortly.

I run biodiesel in my tractor- and E85 in my car. Both support American farmers-- and buying American is a good thing.

thanks for increasing the ozone levels
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091214101408.htm

They found that at warm temperatures, from freezing up to 41 degrees Celsius (give F conversion), in bright sunlight, E85 raised the concentration of ozone in the air by up to 7 parts per billion more than produced by gasoline. At cold temperatures, from freezing down to minus 37 degrees Celsius, they found E85 raised ozone concentrations by up to 39 parts per billion more than gasoline.

and oil is not re-newable?

or just do a google search

gasoline is a much, much more efficient fuel due to its higher btu content compared to any alcohol fuel. The epa and their catalytic converters make every vehicle waste approx 10+ mpg on the hwy.

Ozone for the Record (O3)

Two Types of Ozone in the atmosphere: Don't confuse them.

Stratospheric—

Protects all the life on Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Extends from an altitude 6 to 25 miles above the earth’s surface. Consists of 90 per cent of the atmospheric ozone and is sometimes referred to as the ozone shield.

Ozone is created in the stratosphere when ultraviolet radiation from the sun strikes an oxygen molecule, causing it to split into two oxygen atoms. The oxygen atom then combines with another molecule of O2 to create ozone O3. The ozone molecule is very volatile, and when it is hit by ultraviolet light, it splits again into a molecule of O2 and an oxygen atom. This ongoing process is called the ozone-oxygen cycle.
Stratospheric ozone acts as a protective shield.

Tropospheric--

This is a harmful pollutant.

Extends from the Earth’s surface up to about 6 miles

Contains about 10 per cent of the total ozone. This region contains 90 per cent of the atmosphere, and it is mixed well by weather patterns.

Sunlight acting on smog and air pollution in the troposphere on hot summer days causes ground-based ozone. This type of ozone is an irritant to the mucous membranes in the nose and lungs. This is what you can expect from burning E85 or any ethanoil fuels..

Save Hummer Motors in America Summit’ to be Held in Chicago

General Motors is already winding down operations at its Hummer brand, but it seems some individuals outside the company are lobbying for the marque’s survival. A newly formed capital management firm, dubbed Capital & Labor International Coalition (CLIC), is planning a “Save Hummer Motors in America Summit” April 11 in Chicago.

Thane Ritchie, chairman of CLIC, called for the summit, and is planning to invite all of Hummer’s stakeholders and dealers, several influential UAW members, and Jim Taylor -- Hummer’s CEO -- to the conference. Two management leaders -- President Doug Ebey and CFO Glenn Geiman -- from the UAW local representing the H3 assembly plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, have already confirmed their attendance. Ritchie and CLIC are apparently interested in going to great lengths to try and save the Hummer name.

“We have researched the GM/Hummer situation for the past month, and we believe that Hummer can be saved and continue to offer great jobs and products in America and globally,” said Ritchie.

“We are assembling all of the Hummer stakeholders together in one place to work out a ‘coalition’ solution, said Steve Denari, CEO of CLIC. “Our discussions thus far with the United Auto Workers executives at the Hummer plant all the way through to the Hummer owners’ group leaders have been hugely positive.”

Denari added that CLIC senior management has also met with U.S. Senator Roland Burris, D-Illinois, and asked him to act as a liaison to the government for any possible aid in saving Hummer. Burris confirmed the discussions, and noted he wants to see the ideas that come out of the Chicago summit.

GM representatives could not be reached for comment regarding its stance on the coalition to save the brand.

Armed assailant had his eye on Hummer, not on victim's gun

Customers at the Academy Sports & Outdoors in the 2600 block of N.W. Loop 410 had to duck for about 10 minutes as two men began shooting at each other in the parking lot.
The victim told police he was loading up his vehicle after shopping when a man with a gun surprised him from behind and demanded the man's Hummer. That's when he pulled out his own gun in order to protect himself. As it turned out, that shopper is also a licensed concealed handgun carrier.
While the shootout was going on outside, an announcement instructed customers inside of the store to find shelter.
Two vehicles were hit during the exchange of bullets, and so was the shopper. He suffered a gunshot wound to the hip area, but he is expected to be OK.
Meanwhile, witnesses say the suspect took off in a white small 4-door car. The getaway driver was last seen westbound on the highway.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and have a description of the gunman.
