Re: S-Fund share price lost $0.2225, but ...
Ok, so yesterday was 7/15/15, and at the end of the day the market was what one would think an extremely neutral day, as the Dow was down only 3.41, to 18,050. The market loss is noted as 0.02% for the day. Not going into detail on my TSP distribution, my balance should have nudged down by only a couple dollars, but it instead behaved in the same manner as a negative market day where the Dow experiences a triple digit loss.
The S-Fund share price was $38.6826 on 7/14/15, but reduced to $38.4601 on 7/15/15 . I did not IFT, nor were additional shares bought.
Could someone explain why did the S-Fund drop $0.2225, on a day where Dow only lost $3.41 or 0.02% ? Is the TSP just making up these market prices on certain days and somehow keeping a cut for themselves?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DOW, but one of many) is a weighted average of 30 blue-chip stocks. The S-Fund is based on the 4500 (medium to small caps) lower of the 5000 stocks in the market (the top 500 is the S&P-500, or the C-Fund).
Bottom line, it is extremely difficult to correlate the two for exactly the reason Tom pointed out.
