S-Fund share price lost $0.2225, but ...

Ok, so yesterday was 7/15/15, and at the end of the day the market was what one would think an extremely neutral day, as the Dow was down only 3.41, to 18,050. The market loss is noted as 0.02% for the day. Not going into detail on my TSP distribution, my balance should have nudged down by only a couple dollars, but it instead behaved in the same manner as a negative market day where the Dow experiences a triple digit loss.

The S-Fund share price was $38.6826 on 7/14/15, but reduced to $38.4601 on 7/15/15 . I did not IFT, nor were additional shares bought.

Could someone explain why did the S-Fund drop $0.2225, on a day where Dow only lost $3.41 or 0.02% ? Is the TSP just making up these market prices on certain days and somehow keeping a cut for themselves?

Hi mbrogz -

They are different stocks. The fund you are in matters. Small cap stocks did not perform as well as the large caps on Wednesday. It's as simple as that.

See the charts at the bottom of this page to see what is happening to each fund during the day...

Did someone 'fix' this thread? I couldn't read it earlier, kept getting a "400 Bad Request" page. Wondering if others got that too.

Re: S-Fund share price lost $0.2225, but ...

Nothing yet? Some more background:

Mon 7/6/15, 38.0195
Tues 7/7/15, 38.1387, 0.1192 gain
Weds 7/8/15, 37.4955, 0.6432 loss (this was after Tuesday's major fear of Greece decision/indecision day)
Thurs 7/9/15, 37.6149, 0.1194 gain
Fri 7/10/15, 38.0786, 0.4637 gain
Mon 7/13/15, 38.4561, 0.3775 gain
Tues 7/14/15, 38.6826, 0.2265 gain (long 4 day winning streak)
Weds 7/15/15, 38.4601, 0.2265 loss (after market was down only 3.41??? Major WTF???)

The only other thing I could think of was that the TSP just 'take's' a portion of their 0.98% operating fee on the 15th?

(if this thread should have been in the S-Fund section, please relocate it)

Userque, I couldn't even get the link to work. It was in the list but not responsive. Using IE11 on win7.

Mbrogz3000, The S Fund is not the Dow. The Dow is only something like 30 stocks, large cap. Our S Fund is based on the completion index which is something like 4500 small cap & mid cap stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DOW, but one of many) is a weighted average of 30 blue-chip stocks. The S-Fund is based on the 4500 (medium to small caps) lower of the 5000 stocks in the market (the top 500 is the S&P-500, or the C-Fund).

Bottom line, it is extremely difficult to correlate the two for exactly the reason Tom pointed out.

Ok, thanks...just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me. I see that error every blue moon. Using latest Chrome (Developer Version) and Windows 8.1

Re: S-Fund share price lost $0.2225, but ...

Using the 'charts at the bottom of the page', I did the math and figured out the loss to within a few hundreths. I'll admit that I don't yet understand the correlation between the 'big' Dow Jones average that we all see everyday in the News vs. DWCPF completion total. I'm done putting my foot in my mouth for today.

I guess for me this is a major lesson to 'only' view this site's charts vs. viewing the typical News page money charts. Take the time and program the charts into your smart phone, and put them on top.

Thank you for the clarifications!

Yeah, RMI pointed out that the link was broken. The title had special characters in it that the program didn't like. (">")

Re: S-Fund share price lost $0.2225, but ...

Tom, is DWCPF same as W4500?

Basically, yes. They are basically doing the same thing although they have slightly different returns for some reason.

TSP officially moved from the Wilshire 4500 to the Dow Completion Index a few years ago.
